OBJECTIVES: Emotional prosody is known to play an important role in social communication. Research has shown that children with cochlear implants (CCIs) may face challenges in their ability to express prosody, as their expressions may have less distinct acoustic contrasts and therefore may be judged less accurately. The prosody of children with milder degrees of hearing loss, wearing hearing aids, has sparsely been investigated. More understanding of the prosodic expression by children with hearing loss, hearing aid users in particular, could create more awareness among healthcare professional

Steady airflow resistances in semi-occluded airways as well as acoustic impedances in vocalization are quantified from the lungs to the lips. For clinical and voice training applications, the primary focus is on two airway conditions, an oral semi-occlusion and a semi-occlusion above the vocal folds. Laryngeal airflow resistance is divided into glottal airflow resistance and epilaryngeal airway resistance. Maximum aerodynamic power is transferred to the vocal tract if the glottal airflow resistance is reduced while the epilaryngeal airway resistance is increased. A semi-occlusion at the lips h

Sudden postoperative hearing loss is rare, and thought to be caused by a variety of mechanisms. Here we report on a patient with Crouzon syndrome who experienced multiple episodes of postoperative hearing loss, with persistent hearing loss occurring after she received nitrous oxide as part of a general anesthetic. Nitrous oxide is known to cause pressure changes in closed air spaces. Patients with craniofacial syndromes may have acoustic nerve compression from skull base and cartilage anomalies that cause narrowing of the internal acoustic meatus. These anatomic variations may make patients mo

Facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) is an extremely rare benign tumour that may arise anywhere along the course of the facial nerve; the standard treatment is total removal via microsurgery. Stereotactic radiotherapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of skull base tumours, in particular for acoustic neuromas; it is interesting to notice that also the few data existing in literature about the use of radiotherapy for non acoustic schwannomas show an excellent local control rate and few adverse effects. Here we report a case of facial nerve neuroma, involving the nerve sheath from the gen

The familiar buzz of flying mosquitoes is an important mating signal, with the fundamental frequency of the female's flight tone signaling her presence. In the yellow fever and dengue vector Aedes aegypti, both sexes interact acoustically by shifting their flight tones to match, resulting in a courtship duet. Matching is made not at the fundamental frequency of 400 hertz (female) or 600 hertz (male) but at a shared harmonic of 1200 hertz, which exceeds the previously known upper limit of hearing in mosquitoes. Physiological recordings from Johnston's organ (the mosquito's "ear") reveal sensiti

To determine the factors that modify the measures of voice onset time (VOT) as acoustic parameter in operated cleft palate children. The voice of cleft palate patient is defined by the generation of an abnormal intraoral pression. This doesn't allow the normal generation of voiceless plosives consonants and produces an increased VOT. Acoustic analysis of voice quantifies these parameters. In this study we observed an increased VOT if the patient hadn't got a normal teeth occlusion and a normal soft palate function. Also VOT measures were influenced by cleft lip and delay in beginning of ortodo

A 51 year-old male, complaining of progressive left-sided hearing loss, tinnitus, and unsteady gait, underwent surgery with a probable diagnosis of intracanalicular acoustic neuroma, based on neurological, neurotologic, Computed Tomography (CT), and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) findings. During surgery, the Internal Auditory Canal (IAC) was opened and a reddish-colored, soft, vascular lesion was found within the VII and VIII cranial nerve complex. The lesion, which resulted to be a cavernous malformation, was removed without any postoperative deficits. This report stresses the diagnostic d

In this retrospective study, 100 recently operated acoustic nerve tumors were reviewed to determine the success of the use of auditory brain stem response (ABR) as cross-check of the medical imaging studies. When the patient had sufficient hearing to obtain a diagnostic ABR (93 patients), the initial ABR was abnormal in 96.7%. However, the initial medical imaging procedure (enhanced computerized axial tomography or magnetic resonance imaging) was positive in 69% of the patients. Thus, it is recommended that the ABR be included in the evaluation of patients suspected of having acoustic nerve tu

The basic abnormality of neurofibromatosis consists not only of a maldevelopment of the neuroectoderm but also of the mesoderm. Therefore any organ or system of the body may be involved. Following a short clinical review of the central (acoustic) and peripheral type the well known and the more unusual radiographic findings are summarized. They include cranial and intracranial manifestations (orbitosphenoid dysplasia, bone defects of the skull, acoustic neuroma, glioma of the optic nerve and chiasm, meningioma), spinal lesions (scoliosis, vertebral scalloping, meningocele, neuroma, ependymoma),

INTRODUCTION: Human development includes lots of physical and emotional changes. The human voice depends on age. Voice production is a complex physiological and acoustic phenomenon that depends on many factors such as structure, hormone level, degree of fatigue or nutrition and hydration of the body, systemic diseases, and emotional state. All these factors can be present in anorexia nervosa (AN), such as excessive weight loss, generated hydro-electrolytic changes, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal disturbances in the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the hypothalamic-pitui

Thin-film lithium niobate on sapphire provides an excellent platform for simultaneously confining acoustic and optical modes without suspended structures, enabling efficient acousto-optic modulation through strong piezoelectric coupling. Here, we identify the challenges in realizing the forward Brillouin interaction at visible wavelengths and overcome the limitation by introducing a quasi-phase-matching scheme through periodic waveguide width modulation. We predict a 69.9% inter-modal optical conversion efficiency over 0.36 mm using only 5 mW acoustic power. Our study paves the way for high-pe

The treatment of nasal bone fractures involves closed reduction, in which the reduction position is generally evaluated indirectly by visual examination and palpation. While more direct evaluation methods using ultrasonography can improve treatment outcomes, ultrasonography of the nasal bones requires acoustic coupling materials to hold the entire ultrasonography probe in close contact with the nose. We report the use of the Glove Finger Pad, a homemade acoustic coupling material made from a medical glove. The Glove Finger Pad is easy to prepare and use and produces good images. We believe tha

We present finite element (FE) modeling approaches of ear mechanics including 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the human middle and inner ear. Specifically, we demonstrate a semi-automatic methodology for the 3D reconstruction of the inner ear structures, a FE harmonic response model of the middle ear to predict the stapes footplate frequency response, a 2D FE slice model of the cochlea for the coupled response at the micromechanical level for either acoustic or electrical excitation and a coupled FE middle ear model with a simplified cochlea box model to simulate the basilar membrane velo

We studied transcriptional activity in the higher avian center visual system (Wulst area) in acoustically guided defensive behavior in visually deprived and non-deprived nestlings to evaluate the effects of visual afferentation on functional involvement of visual structures in acoustically guided defensive behavior. Exclusion of visual afferentation from already formed defensive behavior did not significantly change immunoreactivity of Wulst neurons, which attests to substantial contribution of other, non-visual, activating influences. Limitation of visual afferentation during the formation of

BACKGROUND: Vestibular schwannoma (acoustic neuroma) most commonly presents with ipsilateral disturbances of acoustic, vestibular, trigeminal and facial nerves. Presentation of vestibular schwannoma with contralateral facial pain is quite uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: Among 156 cases of operated vestibular schwannoma, we found one case with unusual presentation of contralateral hemifacial pain.
CONCLUSION: The presentation of contralateral facial pain in the vestibular schwannoma is rare. It seems that displacement and distortion of the brainstem and compression of the contralateral trigemina

OBJECTIVE: To study the normal value and clinical applications of blink reflex.
METHODS: Using the clinical electrodiagnostic techniques, the orbital nerve was stimulated to elicit the blink reflex.
RESULTS: In 20(40 sides) normal subjects, two components (R1 and R2) had been documented. The latencies were about 10.1 ms for R1, 30.4 ms and 30.7 ms separately for R2 and R2'. In 30 patients with trigeminal and facial nerve diseases and acoustic neuromas, the latencies on the affected sides were apparently longer or the reflex disappeared (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that the s

Temporary threshold shift (TTS) as well as permanent threshold shift (PTS) represent the most common hearing effect of acute and chronic high level acoustic stimulation. TTS is typically related to the traumatizing stimulus spectrum and to the exposure level and duration. The stapedial acoustic reflex as well as the repetition rate of the exposure may influence TTS. PTS is related to a number of factors including exposure duration, subject's age, exposure to other ototoxic factors, presence of impulse noise components, etc. PTS is usually accompanied with alterations of several cochlear functi
