Perceptions of school climate and depression among Black youth: Do sex and income matter?

Schools play a crucial role in shaping adolescents' development as they navigate the social world beyond their families, with school climate-students' perceptions of the social environment-emerging as a key influence on their mental health outcomes. Previous studies with Black adolescent samples from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have found a link between school climate perceptions and psychological functioning. Black adolescents have been found to perceive a less positive school climate than their peers from other racial backgrounds, leading to increased vulnerability to adverse psychologic

Aggression and patterns of co-occurrence mental health problems in Chinese adolescents: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is an important aspect of adolescents' development and well-being. Mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury, suicide ideation, and suicide attempt, are recognized to be interconnected and to occur often. Research has found that aggression is connected to a variety of mental health problems. However, there's limited knowledge about the patterns of how depression, anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury, suicide ideation, and suicide attempt co-occur, and only few studies describe their association with aggression and sex differences. Genetic Health Education in Adolescents with Congenital Heart Disease: A Patient, Parent, and Clinician Perspective.

Improvements in outcomes for congenital heart disease (CHD) have resulted in a growing adolescent/adult CHD population. Subsequently, education on CHD causes and inheritance has been identified as important. This study aimed to determine population-specific understanding and preferences of CHD causes and inheritance education. CHD adolescents aged 13-18 years, their parent, and clinicians involved in the care of patients with CHD completed a purpose-designed, online survey outlining their current understanding of CHD genetics and inheritance and their preferences for education content and deli

Age-Related Effects on Self-Focused Attention Across Adolescence and the Relationship With Symptoms of Body Dysmorphia, Social Anxiety and Depression.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a critical period for the development of several emotional disorders, including body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), social anxiety disorder (SAD) and depression. It has been suggested that this may be partly due to developmental changes in self-referential processing, including self-focused attention (SFA). However, to date little is known about normative changes in self-focused attention across adolescence. This study investigated age-related effects on SFA during adolescence, and its relationship with symptoms of BDD, SAD and depression. METHODS: A sample of 638 ado

The Search for Youthful Panic: A Systematic Review of the Relationship between Anxiety Sensitivity, Emotion Regulation, and Panic Symptoms Via a Developmental Lens.

Panic disorder (PD) is a debilitating anxiety disorder consisting of episodes of intense fear that may emerge in childhood and adolescence; however, the factors leading to the emergence of PD in youth remain poorly understood. The risk of experiencing panic symptoms may increase due to changes in developmental capabilities in late childhood and adolescence. In particular, two constructs have frequently been examined as likely candidates: increased anxiety sensitivity (AS) and emotion regulation (ER) difficulties associated with socioemotional and cognitive changes that arise in childhood and a

Association between dietary nutrient intake and prevalence of myopia in Korean adolescents: evidence from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

BACKGROUND: The rise in myopia prevalence, particularly among adolescents in East Asia, is a cause for concern. While a combination of environmental and genetic factors is understood to contribute to this trend, the role of dietary nutrients is not yet fully clarified. OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential association between the intake of specific nutrients and the prevalence of myopia in a large, population-based sample of Korean adolescents. METHODS: Data from 18,077 adolescents (average age: 15.05 ± 1.67 years; 51.7% male, 48.3% female) who participated in the 7th Korea National Health and

Alprazolam exposure during adolescence induces long-lasting dysregulation in reward sensitivity to morphine and second messenger signaling in the VTA-NAc pathway.

Increased use of benzodiazepines in adolescents have been reported, with alprazolam (ALP) being the most abused. Drug abuse during adolescence can induce changes with lasting consequences. This study investigated the neurobiological consequences of ALP exposure during adolescence in C57BL/6J male mice. Mice received ALP (0, 0.5, 1.0 mg/kg) once/daily (postnatal day 35-49). Changes in responsiveness to morphine (2.5, 5.0 mg/kg), using the conditioned place preference paradigm, were assessed 24-h and 1-month after ALP exposure. In a separate experiment, mice received ALP (0, 0.5 mg/kg) and then
