INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the immunohistochemical expression of transforming growing factor beta (TGF-β) and interferon gamma (IFN-γ) between radicular cysts (RCs) and dentigerous cysts (DCs).
METHODS: Twenty RCs and DCs were selected for analysis of the immunoexpression of TGF-β and IFN-γ in the epithelium and capsule.
RESULTS: The cell reactivity of TGF-β and IFN-γ in the lining epithelium and capsule of RCs showed no significant differences when compared with DCs (P > .05). There was a tendency of a higher expression of TGF-β in the capsule of DCs.

Gastric pH levels were measured in samples of gastric aspirates from eight fasted beagle dogs. The gastric pH in fasting dogs fluctuated from 2.7 to 8.3, with a mean of 6.8+/-0.2 (SE). Sixty-eight soft cataracts were removed utilizing the O'Gawa double-bore aspirating-irrigating cannula. The postoperative visual acuity was found to be 20/100 or better in 83% and 20/40 or better in 59% of the 64 cases in which visual acuity was obtainable. In congenital cataracts, associated ocular defects such as strabismus or nystagmus reduced the visual prognosis. Cataracts are well known to be associated with myotonic dystrophy. Less well known are the phenomena of recurrent posterior capsule opacification and capsulorhexis contracture post cataract surgery. Two cases are described herein of postoperative capsular complications requiring multiple capsulotomies in patients with myotonic dystrophy. It is proposed that a common aetiology may underlie both posterior capsule opacification and capsulorhexis contracture in myotonic dystrophy cases.

Otosclerosis very often leads to severe hearing loss in a chronic progressive manner. In the first phase of the disease, otospongiosis causes an inflammatory osteolytic process in the osseous labyrinthine capsule. In the cases reported here, this osteolytic process was pronounced in the osseous capsule of the cochlea. High-resolution CT and MRI showed the precise localization and stage of this inflammatory-osteolytic process in the petrous bone, while scintigraphy confirmed the diagnosis.
