Computed tomography (CT) of an 18-year-old man with a history of repeated episodes of pneumonia demonstrated consolidation containing multiple cysts in the right lower lobe. Additional CT angiography and thin-section CT of the lesion revealed neither a supplying systemic artery nor an abnormal bronchus. Lobectomy was performed, and histological examination showed many cysts resembling enlarged bronchioles, diagnosed as congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation.

A 5-year-old boy with cat scratch disease presented with fever of unknown origin and osteomyelitis of the thoracic spine and epidural abscess. He did not have localizing signs or symptoms. Computed tomography of the abdomen, which was initially negative, showed hepatosplenic disease. Cat scratch disease has variable systemic presentations and should be included in the differential diagnosis of fever of unknown origin if an epidemiologic risk factor is present.

Splenitis can complicate blood-borne sepsis in hemodialysis patients. Symptoms include left upper quadrant pain and tenderness in addition to generalized systemic manifestation of infection. Clinical diagnosis is difficult and there is no specific investigation to confirm it. Computed tomography scan of the spleen can help in identifying a splenic abscess, rupture, or infarction. A splenectomy is the treatment of choice in splenic abscess, in splenitis to avoid spontaneous rupture, and in recurrent perisplenitis.

Stereotactic biopsy procedures, in which a computer-based, three-dimensional-image-guided system accurately locates patients' brain tumors, are relatively new diagnostic methods. Complications from stereotactic biopsy procedures are minimal compared with open craniotomy procedures because they are performed with local anesthesia. Perioperative nurses should have knowledge of and be trained in stereotactic biopsy procedures to ensure optimal care for patients undergoing these procedures.

We report the intraoperative use of bent probes for 3-dimensional computer-assisted navigation in ENT surgery with the ISG Viewing Wand. Probe calibration is standardized and the new probes comply with the overall application accuracy of the navigation system. The bent probes permit an easy access to the remotest locations of the maxillary and the frontal sinus and are beneficial for application in paranasal sinus surgery. We present our clinical experiences with these probes.

Portal venous barium and air intravasation occurred during an air contrast enema in a man with ulcerative colitis. Abdominal plain radiography and CT subsequently showed increased hepatic density. Computed tomography also showed colonic intramural and pericolic nodal or venous barium, increased splenic density, and pulmonary arterial barium. The patient's course was benign because little barium embolized beyond the liver into the systemic circulation.

Bone lesions in leiomyosarcoma are uncommon. When encountered, they are usually a late manifestation of disease seen in the setting of widespread systemic metastases. We present five cases of metastatic leiomyosarcoma, including one in which a bone lesion predated detection of a primary gastric leiomyosarcoma and one in which bone metastases signaled disease recurrence. Computed tomography in 14 of 16 osseous leiomyosarcomas demonstrated a lytic, non-expansile pattern.

There is no etiologic treatment for acute necrotizing pancreatitis. Advances in intensive care resulted in a reduction in early death rate by a better control of systemic complications. Delayed death rate from infection is high (20-60%). Diagnostic problems are an important cause, in spite of the aid of computed tomography and echography. The prognosis will further be improved by earlier diagnosis, a better definition of surgical treatment when complications arise, and constant medicosurgical collaboration.

Two distinct masses in the left orbit were incidentally found in a 48-year-old woman during a computed tomographic scan done to evaluate neurologic complaints. Initial diagnostic considerations focused on a lymphoproliferative disorder or other systemic disease. Orbitotomy revealed two discrete tumors, both cavernous hemangiomas. Although uncommon, cavernous hemangioma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the patient with multiple orbital lesions.

A seven-week-old infant presented with tonic posturing and nervous irritability after concentrated tea ingestion. The tea was analyzed and found to contain caffeine, a methylxanthine central nervous system stimulant. With the aid of a computer, projected blood levels were calculated over a thirty-hour time period and comared to the infant's clinical status. It is recommended that beverages containing xanthines be given to infants and small children with caution.

In this work, we study linear systems with deformable derivatives and provide a matrix-based approach to their solution. The given system is first transformed into a comparable classical matrix differential equation using a deformation-adjusted system matrix. This paper describes a framework for modelling dopamine function in the mammalian brain. It proposes that both learning and action planning involve processes minimizing prediction errors encoded by dopaminergic neurons. In this framework, dopaminergic neurons projecting to different parts of the striatum encode errors in predictions made by the corresponding systems within the basal ganglia. PURPOSE: To avoid malalignment of components during hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA), we used a computed tomography (CT)-based navigation system for guidance. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical accuracy and precision of HRA performed using the CT-based navigation systems.

UNLABELLED: The association between mesenteric panniculitis and Sjögren's syndrome, although rare, is starting to be recognized. Usually, mesenteric panniculitis is symptomatic, presenting with either general or gastrointestinal symptoms. Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease that typically affects secretory glands, but may have serious systemic involvement. We report the case of a 77-year-old patient in whom accidental discovery of asymptomatic mesenteric panniculitis on computed tomography led to the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome with several systemic manifestations.
