High-risk sexual behavior at social venues in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Persistent high levels of sexually transmitted infection (STI) in Madagascar indicate current prevention strategies are inadequate. STI/HIV prevention based in social venues may play an important role in reaching individuals at risk of infection. We identified venues where people meet sexual partners and measured the need and potential for venue-based prevention. METHODS: Interviews were conducted in 7 Madagascar towns with 1) community informants to identify social venues, 2) individuals socializing at a sample of venues to assess sexual behavior among venue patrons, and 3) venue

Situational predictors of sexual risk episodes among men with HIV who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: Men with HIV who have sex with men (MSM) represent the largest group of people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States. It is important to understand the sexual risk-taking behaviours that may be linked to the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in this population. Models of HIV risk that focus solely on personal factors have been demonstrated to be ineffective at explaining risk behaviour. Rather, in order to fully understand sexual risk-taking, it is important to examine the factors linked to high-risk sexual situations and not solely the factors linke

A review of current intravaginal drug delivery approaches employed for the prophylaxis of HIV/AIDS and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

The objective of this review is to describe the current status of several intravaginal anti-HIV microbicidal delivery systems these delivery systems and microbicidal compounds in the context of their stage within clinical trials and their potential cervicovaginal defence successes. The global Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) pandemic continues to spread at a rate of more than 15,000 new infections daily and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can predispose people to acquiring HIV infection. Male-to-female transmission is eight times more likely to occur than female-to-male transmission

The association between depressive symptoms, substance use, and HIV risk among youth with an arrest history.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile justice youth are at increased risk for contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/sexually transmitted infections because of higher rates of substance use and sexual risk-taking behaviors. However, little is known about the relationship between depressive symptoms, substance use, and HIV risk among youth who traditionally present with behavioral symptoms. METHOD: Adolescents and young adults (N = 835) who participated in a larger multisite HIV prevention program in three states provided baseline data on depressive symptoms, substance use, sexual risk, risk attitudes,

Changes in STI services following a community based STI-intervention project in Cambodia.

The aim of this study was to assess changes in sexually transmitted infections (STI) related care following a STI project with a particular focus on registered brothel-based (direct) female sex workers (DFSWs) in four border provinces of Cambodia. A survey of health care facilities providing STI care was undertaken and the results compared with a baseline survey done two years previously. The main components of the project were: renovation of the STI clinics, STI training, formation of mobile teams, provision of STI drugs, and the introduction of basic laboratory tests at STI clinics. Intervie

Sexual health of homeless youth: prevalence and correlates of sexually transmissible infections.

BACKGROUND: The study examined risk factors for having ever contracted sexually transmissible infections (STI) among a high-risk sample in midwestern USA. METHODS: A cross sectional survey was conducted among 428 homeless youth aged 16-19 years. Assessed correlates included child maltreatment, street exposure, sexual histories, street experiences and substance use. RESULTS: Multivariate analyses revealed that males were 86% less likely to have had STI compared with females (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.14; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.06-0.31). Blacks were almost four times more likely

Stage of change behavioral assessment tool fails to predict the prevalence of chlamydia in an urban adolescent health clinic.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Strategies to reduce STI among adolescents and young adults have failed to consistently demonstrate effectiveness. A universal approach may not be appropriate because individuals are at different stages with respect to self-management behaviors. Thus, the Stage of Change Transtheoretical Model has been advocated. This study was conducted to determine whether staging could be accomplished in an urban adolescent clinic and whether it provides a tool to predict STI risk. DESIGN: Participants were interviewed and staged according to a standardized instrument with respect to sexua

Modifiable risk factors associated with clearance of type-specific cervical human papillomavirus infections in a cohort of university students.

BACKGROUND: Previous findings regarding risk factors for human papillomavirus (HPV) persistence, other than viral determinants, identified from prospective cohort studies have been inconsistent in part because study designs have differed with respect to differing HPV detection methods and varying lengths of follow-up time. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to continue the search for epidemiologic risk factors of persistent cervical HPV infections and determine what behaviors differed between those women with transient HPV infections and those women who cannot clear their type-specif

Higher risk behaviour and rates of sexually transmitted diseases in Mwanza compared to Uganda may help explain HIV prevention trial outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine to what extent the higher impact of treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STD) on HIV incidence in Mwanza, Tanzania than in Rakai and Masaka, Uganda might be explained by baseline differences between the trial populations. DESIGN: A re-analysis of baseline data from the three trial populations comparing demography, sexual risk behaviour and HIV/STD epidemiology. METHODS: Data were compared after age-standardization and adjustments for sample selection where necessary. STD rates were also adjusted for the sensitivities and specificities of the diagnostic techniq

Health status and health care use of Massachusetts women reporting partner abuse.

BACKGROUND: Studies indicate that women abused by their intimate partners are at increased risk for a number of health problems and have increased rates of health care utilization. However, these findings are based mainly on studies using clinic or health plan populations. In this study, we examined the association between intimate partner abuse (IPA) and health concerns and health care utilization in a population-based sample of adult women. METHODS: We analyzed data on 2043 women aged 18 to 59 who participated in the 1998 Massachusetts Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a p
