Availability, cost and affordability of essential medicines for smoking cessation in low-income and middle-income countries: a cross-sectional study.

Smoking cessation is more effective when supported by medicines. Data on the availability, cost and affordability of these treatments in low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC) are limited. Cross-sectional data for smoking cessation medications were collected from pharmacies, healthcare facilities and central medicine stores in 60 LMIC (2022-2023). Medications had varying availability, large price ranges and were essentially unaffordable. Enabling access to these medications is important in reducing tobacco consumption and associated disease. Strategies for integrating smoking cessation

The globalization of cystic fibrosis care.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The field of cystic fibrosis is experiencing dramatic changes, as the translation of a massive body of scientific knowledge accumulated from the day of the cloning of the CFTR gene has led to the identification of effective therapies to correct the basic defect. This has also allowed care providers and people with cystic fibrosis in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) to become more knowledgeable and proficient in cystic fibrosis cares. RECENT FINDINGS: This review focuses on two main aspects highly relevant to understand the current status of cystic fibrosis in

Cigarette taxation and socioeconomic inequalities in under-5 mortality across 94 low-income and middle-income countries: a longitudinal ecological study.

BACKGROUND: Although increasing cigarette taxes is known to improve child survival, there are few data on their effect on socioeconomic inequalities in child mortality. We investigated the association between cigarette taxation and socioeconomic inequalities in mortality in children younger than 5 years (hereafter referred to as under-5 mortality) in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: This was a longitudinal ecological study. We linked country-level annual data on 94 LMICs, as defined by the World Bank, and annual data on under-5 mortality by wealth quintile from the UN

Inequality in Utilization of Maternal Healthcare Services in Low‑ and Middle‑Income Countries: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Inequality in maternal healthcare service (MHS) utilization is a significant global health challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Recently, the literature on MHS inequality in LMICs has expanded. We conducted a scoping review to synthesize existing evidence and identify knowledge gaps. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL Ultimate in June 2023 for literature published since January 1, 2015. We included empirical studies using nationally representative data to measure inequality in at least one of five MHS i

How to measure the core functions of primary care in low-income and middle-income country settings.

The core functions of primary care are first contact access, comprehensiveness, continuity, coordination and person-centredness. These five core functions are highlighted as essential aspects of quality by the new WHO's measurement framework. In low-income and middle-income countries, the core functions are rarely measured and routinely collected data does not support their measurement. Existing international tools to measure the quality of primary care may evaluate some aspects of these core functions, but none of the reviewed tools focused on all of them. In sub-Saharan Africa, the Primary C

Health facilities readiness and associated factors to provide growth monitoring services in low-income and middle-income countries: evidence from national service provision assessment surveys of six countries.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malnutrition among under-5 children is a major challenge in low-income and middle-income countries, contributing to poor growth and development. Growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) is recommended by WHO for early detection, yet its implementation remains weak due to limited resources and health system gaps. While many studies focus on utilisation, little is known about facility readiness, especially from multicountry analyses. This study aimed to assess the readiness of health facilities to provide growth monitoring (GM) service and associated factors using nationa

Regional and sub-regional estimates of low birth weight and its determinants in 44 low- and middle-income countries: evidence from demographic and health survey data.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight continues to be a significant cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, contributing to 80% of neonatal deaths in low and middle-income countries. To the authors' knowledge, no prior study has estimated the regional and sub-regional prevalence of low birth weight and its determinants in these settings. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the pooled and regional estimates of low birth weight in low and middle-income countries. METHODS: We used a weighted sample of 343,898 birth records, taken from the pooled demographic and health surveys conducted from 2015 t

Help-seeking behaviors among survivors of intimate partner violence during pregnancy in 54 low- and middle-income countries: evidence from Demographic and Health Survey data.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy is a global issue of public health importance. Due to the low rates of help-seeking in response to IPV, research on survivors' help-seeking behaviors is scarce, particularly within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The present study provides a cross-national evidence of informal and formal help-seeking patterns among pregnant women experiencing IPV. METHODS: This study made use of population-based data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program from 54 LMICs, collected between 2005 and 2020 (N = 359,027). Applying

School nurse-involved sexual and reproductive health education for adolescents' students in high-income countries: a mixed-methods systematic review.

This mixed-methods systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of school nurse-involved educational interventions in promoting adolescents' sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in high-income countries. The review adopted the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) convergent segregated approach. A multi-database search was conducted between March and May 2024. Two researchers independently selected the relevant studies and assessed the risk of bias using RoB 2.0, RoB 2 for Cluster Randomized Trials (CRT), RoBANS 2, and the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research. Nineteen studies (1

Pediatric kidney replacement therapies in low-to-middle income countries: a review and white paper.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) disproportionately impacts children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where up to 85% of AKI cases occur. As for pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD), the true burden in LMICs remains unclear, as many cases go undiagnosed early, and other children succumb without adequate treatment. Unfortunately, these disparities result from limited access to kidney replacement therapy (KRT), kidney laboratory and imaging resources, healthcare provider shortages, and financial barriers. Pediatric kidney disease in LMICs often remains undiagnosed until advanced stages, m

Implementation of Kidney Transplantation in a Low-income Country: Experience of Senegal.

Chronic kidney disease poses a major health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, with high morbidity and mortality rates. Kidney transplantation (KT) is the most effective treatment for end-stage kidney disease. However, until recently, this option was not available in Senegal. In response, the government enacted a law authorizing KTs from living donors and also established a supervisory committee called "Comité National du Don et de la Transplantation d'organe." After this approval, the Aristide Le Dantec Hospital and the Ouakam Military Hospital consortium successfully performed the first transp

Epidemiology and outcomes of patients with cardiac arrest in the emergency department of a lower middle-income country.

BACKGROUND: Advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) for cardiac arrest is a cornerstone of emergency care and yet remains poorly studied in low- and middle-income countries. We characterised the clinical epidemiology and outcomes of cardiac arrest and ACLS in an ED in central Haiti, a lower middle-income country with a nascent emergency care system. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of adult and paediatric patients who suffered cardiac arrest in an academic hospital ED in central Haiti from January 2019 to August 2020. Patients were identified prospectively at the ti

Effects of environment and globalization on the double and triple burdens of infection symptoms among under-five children across low-middle income countries using machine learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Childhood infectious diseases and related symptoms, such as fever, cough, and diarrhea among children constitute the leading cause of death in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). We examined the environmental predictors of double and triple burden (D/TB) of infection symptoms among under-five children using multilevel machine learning (ML) methods. METHODS: We used Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data from 58 LMICs between 2000 and 2023. These data were merged with cluster-level particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide from the National Aeronautics and Space Administratio

Outcomes of ventriculoperitoneal shunt surgery for hydrocephalus in children in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Improving outcomes for pediatric patients with hydrocephalus in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) requires research on ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) complications and outcomes that may be comparable to studies conducted in high-income countries (HICs). The authors aimed to address this gap by conducting a systematic review to analyze VPS complications and outcomes among pediatric patients in LMICs. METHODS: This review adhered to PRISMA guidelines and the Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR 2) quality assessment. The authors screened English
