BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease with episodic symptoms of wheezing, chest tightness, cough, and shortness of breath. High ambient ozone levels have been associated with increased airway inflammation and asthma morbidity in prior studies. Mechanisms underlying individual susceptibility to asthma exacerbations from poor air quality are not fully understood.
OBJECTIVE: As part of a panel observational study, we hypothesized that systemic antioxidant ability and antioxidant status may be associated with more stable asthma during high ozone season.

In this work, magnetic di-thio functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DT-MCM-41) were prepared by grafting dithiocarbamate groups within the channels of magnetic mesoporous silica nanocomposites. OBJECTIVES: We studied the range in urinary levels of 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxyl acid (TTCA), a metabolite of CS2 and phthalic acid (PA), a common metabolite of phthalates, across factories and departments in the contemporary rubber manufacturing industry.

The authors studied 140 women, selected at random, aged 22-55, divided into two groups. Group I (control) included 50 women, mean age 40.1 +/- 1.7 years. Group II included 90 women, mean age 39.7 +/- 2.1 years, chronically exposed to 15.6 - 21.84 mg/m3 of carbon disulphide from 0.5 to over 20 years. It was found that women chronically exposed to CS2 showed significantly lower levels of dopamine and lower activities of DBH (p < 0.001), significantly lower urinary excretion of adrenaline (p < 0.001), but insignificantly lower excretion of noradrenaline and vanillylmandelic acid.
