Inner ear malformations (IEMs) present significant challenges for cochlear implantation (CI), particularly the common cavity deformity, in which the cochlea and vestibule merge into a single space. Surgical and audiological outcomes in such cases depend on accurate electrode placement, nerve integrity, and tailored surgical strategies. We report the case of a pediatric patient with bilateral common cavity deformities who underwent sequential bilateral CI using the double posterior transmastoid labyrinthotomy (TML) approach with custom-made electrodes. The patient, diagnosed with profound bilat

OBJECTIVE: Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by a mutation in the gene encoding the enzyme alpha-L-iduronidase. This enzyme is responsible for degradation of dermatan and heparan sulfates. Enzyme deficiency results in their accumulation in lysosomes of virtually all organs, resulting in severe somatic and neurological changes. Clinical findings of otitis media with mixed hearing loss are common. Cellular and molecular mechanisms of ear pathology and hearing loss are not understood. The purpose of this study is to describe the age-related audiologic

Sulfur mustard (bis(2-chloroethyl) sulfide (HD)), a potent cutaneous vesicant and bifunctional alkylating agent, produces significant time-dependent histopathological changes in the skin of the mouse. The right ears of male CD1 mice were exposed topically to 5.0 microl of 195 mM (0.16 mg) HD in dichloromethane and harvested at 6, 12, 18 and 24 h. The left ear control was dosed with 5.0 microl of dichloromethane. In all controls and HD-treated mouse ear, moderate immunofluorescence staining was seen at the epidermal-dermal junction with bullous pemphigoid (BP), epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (

Aminoglycosides and cisplatin drugs are extensively utilized for their high efficacy in treating various conditions in the clinic, however, their ototoxic side effects warrant significant attention. These drugs could penetrate the inner ear via specific channels or transporters, which not only affect the survival of hair cells but also induce the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. Currently, scientific research mainly addresses this issue through the downstream intervention of reactive oxygen species. However, recent studies have revealed that directly reducing the uptake of these drug

More than 5 % of people worldwide suffer from hearing disorders. Ototoxic drugs, aging, exposure to loud sounds, rupture, subperichondrial hematoma, perichondritis, burns and frostbite and infections are the main causes of hearing loss, some of which can destroy the cartilage and lead to deformation. On the other hand, disorders of the external ear are diverse and can range from dangerous neoplasms to defects that are not acceptable from a cosmetic standpoint. These issues include injuries, blockages, dermatoses, and infections, and any or all of them may be bothersome to the busy doctor. Usin

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and implications of phase changes in extracochlear electrocochleography (ECochG) recordings during cochlear implantation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extracochlear ECochG recordings were performed before and after insertion of the cochlear implant (CI) electrode by a recording electrode placed on the promontory. Acoustic stimuli were tone bursts at 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 Hz. The pure tone average (PTA) was determined before and approximately 4 weeks after surgery.
RESULTS: Extracochlear ECochG recordings in 69 ears of 68 subjects were included. At 250 Hz, the

OBJECTIVES: In pediatric audiology, objective techniques for hearing threshold estimation in infants and children with profound or severe hearing loss play a key role. Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) and auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) are available for frequency-dependent hearing threshold estimations and both techniques show strong correlations but sometimes with considerable differences. The aim of the study was to compare hearing threshold estimations in children with and without cochlear and cochlear nerve malformations.
METHODS: Two groups with profound or severe hearing loss

BACKGROUND: Aging, noise, infection, and ototoxic drugs are the major causes of human acquired sensorineural hearing loss, but treatment options are limited. CRISPR/Cas9 technology has tremendous potential to become a new therapeutic modality for acquired non-inherited sensorineural hearing loss. Here, we develop CRISPR/Cas9 strategies to prevent aminoglycoside-induced deafness, a common type of acquired non-inherited sensorineural hearing loss, via disrupting the Htra2 gene in the inner ear which is involved in apoptosis but has not been investigated in cochlear hair cell protection.

Distinct forms of age-related hearing loss are hypothesized based on evidence from animal models of aging, which are identifiable in human audiograms. The Sensory phenotype results from damage (e.g., excessive noise or ototoxic drugs) to outer hair cells and sometimes inner hair cells, producing large threshold increases predominately at high frequencies. The Metabolic phenotype results from a decline in endocochlear potential that can reduce outer hair cell motility throughout the cochlea, producing gradually sloping thresholds from lower to higher frequencies. Finally, the combined Metabolic

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Patients with enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) often demonstrate an air-bone gap (ABG) at low frequencies on audiometric testing. The mechanism for this has not been well elucidated. We investigated vestibular aqueduct (VA) size and ABG in patients with EVA, and assessed the relationship between VA diameter and ABG.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
METHODS: We assessed 98 ears from 49 individuals diagnosed with Pendred syndrome. The VA diameters of ears in groups with (n = 60) and without (n = 38) ABG were measured using axial computed tomography images. Three dif

CONCLUSIONS: Good hearing preservation can be achieved during acoustic neuroma surgery assisted by real-time dynamic auditory monitoring and ear endoscopic techniques. Preservation of the arachnoid and its blood supply are important for hearing preservation, and injury to the internal auditory artery is the most important cause of hearing loss.
OBJECTIVE: To explore techniques to preserve hearing during acoustic neuroma resection.
METHODS: This was a retrospective case review in a hospital setting. From July 2003 to July 2007, intraoperative auditory monitoring using auditory brainstem respo

Hearing impairment is often associated with damage to the hair cells of the cochlea. An area of the cochlea with complete loss of function of inner hair cells is known as a 'dead region'. Dead regions can be identified by measuring detection thresholds for pure tones in quiet and in threshold-equalizing noise (TEN). So far, the TEN test has only been used to identify dead regions in adults with moderate-to-severe hearing impairment. The aim of this study was to assess problems in applying the TEN test to teenagers with longstanding severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing impairment, and to as

Deafness is the prevailing sensory impairment among humans, impacting every aspect of one's existence. Half of congenital deafness cases are attributed to genetic factors. Studies have shown that Luzp2 is expressed in hair cells (HCs) and supporting cells of the inner ear, but its specific role in hearing remains unclear. To determine the importance of Luzp2 in auditory function, we generated mice deficient in Luzp2. Our results revealed that Luzp2 has predominant expression within the HCs and pillar cells. However, the loss of Luzp2 did not result in any changes in auditory threshold. HCs or

BACKGROUND: Susac syndrome is a rare autoimmune microangiopathy that affects the small vessels of the retina, brain, and inner ear, leading to a characteristic triad of encephalopathy, branch retinal artery occlusions, and sensorineural hearing loss. The syndrome often presents diagnostic challenges due to its overlapping symptoms with other conditions. Immunosuppressive therapies remain the cornerstone of treatment.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the literature from PubMed (1998-2024).
RESULTS: Special emphasis is placed on the role of ophthalmologists, who play a pivotal role in the di
