SCL-90-R emotional distress ratings in substance use and impulse control disorders: One-factor, oblique first-order, higher-order, and bi-factor models compared.

To fully understand the dimensionality of an instrument in a certain population, rival bi-factor models should be routinely examined and tested against oblique first-order and higher-order structures. The present study is among the very few studies that have carried out such a comparison in relation to the Symptom Checklist-90-R. In doing so, it utilized a sample comprising 2593 patients with substance use and impulse control disorders. The study also included a test of a one-dimensional model of general psychological distress. Oblique first-order factors were based on the original a priori 9-

Anatomical correlates of alien hand syndromes.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to correlate various alien hand syndromes (AHS) with sites of lesion in 16 patients with anterior cerebral artery (ACA) territory infarction. BACKGROUND: All previous reports of AHS were case studies. Their clinico-anatomic correlations were still controversial. While the callosal lesion appears necessary for various types of AHS, which portion of the corpus callosum is associated with which syndrome is still not yet completely resolved. METHOD: Sixteen patients with ACA territory infarction were selected from a stroke registry containing 7355 indiv

A review of the usefulness of the standard EEG in psychiatry.

The goal of this paper is to draw conclusions about the usefulness of the standard EEG in psychiatry. In general, two thirds of psychiatric referrals for an EEG are expected to provide useful information. The emphasis in schizophrenia is placed on left-sided abnormalities, especially on the left temporal area. In mood disorders the emphasis is on right-sided foci, in addition to the controversial 6/sec spike and wave complexes, small sharp spikes and positive spikes. In the acute stage of alcoholism, a relationship is seen between the degree of intoxication and the amount of slow activity, whi

Responses of trigeminal brain stem neurons and the digastric muscle to tooth-pulp stimulation in awake cats.

1. Cats were prepared for chronic recording from neurons in pars oralis and pars interpolaris of the trigeminal spinal nucleus. Electrodes were implanted into canine teeth for electrical stimulation and the digastric muscle for recording electromyograms. 2. Recordings were made from the animals when they were awake and unrestrained as well as when they were lightly anesthetized. Some neurons were studied under both conditions. 3. In an awake animal, single tooth-pulp stimuli of 0.1 ms duration and < or = 1 mA intensity produced no aversive behavior. 4. The response of trigeminal brain stem neu

Effects of music-based occupational therapy activities on attention executive functions in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a multifactorial neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive, motor, sensory, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. This disorder may lead to impairments in various executive functions, such as sustained attention, planning and organizing, and impulse control. Occupational therapy interventions offer strategies aimed at enhancing attention, executive functions, and motor skills in individuals with ADHD, while also providing guidance and support to caregivers throughout the process. Caregivers of children with ADHD play

The relationship between abnormalities in amygdala functional connectivity and emotion regulation difficulties in problematic smartphone users.

BACKGROUND: Problematic Smartphone Use (PSU) refers to behaviors that are detrimental to a user's physical and mental health due to poor cell phone usage. Established resting-state functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) studies have shown that changes in the strength of connectivity between the amygdala and regulatory networks such as the precuneus and cerebellum are strongly associated with emotional impulsivity in a variety of addictive behaviors. However, there is still a lack of systematic empirical research on the specific patterns of altered functional connectivity of the amygdala network

[ADHD and attachment processes: are they related?].

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is defined on the basis of developmentally inappropriate inattention, motor activity and impulsivity that emerges early in development and causes impairment in social and academic functioning. ADHD is described as a multifactorial disease, with a well studied genetic vulnerability, and early environmental factors also playing an important role in the development and course of the disorder. Current aetiological models emphasize interaction between genes and environment. The concept of attachment, as proposed by John Bowlby, reflects quality of ear

Residual neurocognitive features of long-term ecstasy users with minimal exposure to other drugs.

AIMS: In field studies assessing cognitive function in illicit ecstasy users, there are several frequent confounding factors that might plausibly bias the findings toward an overestimate of ecstasy-induced neurocognitive toxicity. We designed an investigation seeking to minimize these possible sources of bias. DESIGN: We compared illicit ecstasy users and non-users while (1) excluding individuals with significant life-time exposure to other illicit drugs or alcohol; (2) requiring that all participants be members of the 'rave' subculture; and (3) testing all participants with breath, urine and

The role of top-down attentional control and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms in predicting future motor vehicle crash risk.

Objective: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) confers elevated risk for automobile crashes, both as a clinical syndrome and continuously when examining risk as a function of symptom severity. However, the neurocognitive mechanisms and processes underlying this risk remain poorly understood. The current longitudinal study examined whether attention network components reflect neurocognitive pathways linking ADHD symptoms with adverse driving outcomes. Method: Drivers from six U.S. sites participating in the Strategic Highway Research Program Naturalistic Driving Study (N=3,226) were

Cannabis and tolerance: acute drug impairment as a function of cannabis use history.

Cannabis use history as predictor of neurocognitive response to cannabis intoxication remains subject to scientific and policy debates. The present study assessed the influence of cannabis on neurocognition in cannabis users whose cannabis use history ranged from infrequent to daily use. Drug users (N = 122) received acute doses of cannabis (300 μg/kg THC), cocaine HCl (300 mg) and placebo. Cocaine served as active control for demonstrating neurocognitive test sensitivity. Executive function, impulse control, attention, psychomotor function and subjective intoxication were significantly worse

Variation in serotonin neurotransmission genes affects neural activation during response inhibition in adolescents and young adults with ADHD and healthy controls.

OBJECTIVES: Deficits in response inhibition have been associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Given the role of serotonin in ADHD and impulsivity, we postulated that genetic variants within the serotonin pathway might influence response inhibition. METHODS: We measured neural activation during stop-signal task performance in adolescents with ADHD (N = 185), their unaffected siblings (N = 111), and healthy controls (N = 124), and investigated the relationship of two serotonin gene polymorphisms (the rs6296 SNP of the HTR1B gene and HTTLPR variants of the 5-HTT gene) wi

Rhinotillexomania: a rare cause of medial orbital wall erosion.

The authors report a rare case of medial orbital wall erosion with an orbital inflammatory mass and resultant lacrimal obstruction secondary to rhinotillexomania. A 67-year-old male with known history of compulsive nose picking (rhinotillexomania) sought treatment for complaints of watering in his OD. Examination revealed a blocked right inferior canaliculus. Nasal endoscopy showed a large nasal septal defect with multiple areas of crusting and bleeding. Hematologic investigations were normal. CT scan confirmed a large nasal septal and right medial orbital wall defect with an adjacent soft tis

Similarities and differences in borderline and organic personality disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has shown that brain injury patients with Organic Personality Disorder (OPD) may display "borderline" traits due to prefrontal damage, and their personality structure may be unstable and close to a borderline personality organisation. They may have few general neuropsychological dysfunctions but specific executive deficits. Similar deficits have been found in patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The objective of this study was to identify differences and similarities between the neuropsychological and personality profiles of BPD and OPD patients.
