Transcranial Photobiomodulation Modulates Oxidative Stress Biomarkers and Complex IV Activity in Anhedonic-Like Behavior.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and complex condition with limited treatment success in many patients. Photobiomodulation (PBM), particularly transcranial PBM (tPBM) using red to near-infrared light, has emerged as a promising non-invasive intervention. However, optimal parameters and precise mechanisms remain unclear. This research aimed to analyze the effects of transcranial photobiomodulation (red and infrared) on behavioral and biological parameters related to MDD in a chronic mild stress (CMS) model. Male Wistar rats were exposed to CMS for five weeks and subsequently categ

Structural, optical, and magnetic characterization of Cu-Zn-Ni spinel ferrite nanoparticles with antibacterial potential.

One of the most pressing challenges in biomedical applications is the growing prevalence of bacteria that are resistant to multiple antibiotics. Metal-based nanoparticles are emerging as a promising strategy to address this problem, which is the focus of the present work. Cu0.15Zn0.2Ni0.65Fe2O4 nano-ferrite was synthesized via the co-precipitation method. The chosen cation ratio preserves the spinel phase while Ni improves magnetic response, and Zn enhances magnetic softness and site stability. For comparison, single-cation ferrites NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and CuFe2O4 were synthesized using the same

Machine learning-optimized charge transfer nanocrystals for synergistic NIR photothermal therapy, ferroptosis, and electrochemical detection of breast cancer.

Despite significant advances in near-infrared (NIR) photothermal agents, most current systems face challenges including large band gaps and poorly defined crystalline morphology, compromised responsiveness in the tumor microenvironment due to inefficient and time-consuming optimization, and dependence on separate, cancer type-specific diagnostic platforms for effective treatment. To overcome these challenges, we rationally synthesized a novel class of charge transfer complex-derived nanocrystals (CTNs) with well-defined morphology and a significantly reduced band gap in the NIR-I region, achie

Enhancing Cerebral Blood Flow With Near-Infrared Light Therapy in Mouse Model of a Chronic Hypoxia-Induced Bilateral Common Carotid Artery Stenosis.

Transcranial photobiomodulation (PBM) was evaluated in a bilateral common carotid artery stenosis mouse model of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. PBM enhanced cognitive performance and regional cerebral blood flow, particularly in hippocampal and cortical regions. Histological analysis revealed attenuated neuronal loss and smaller perivascular spaces, although residual necrotic foci persisted. PBM reduced BCL2 expression and modulated HIF-1 in a context-dependent manner, suggesting neuroprotection via BCL2-independent and hypoxia-responsive pathways. These results support PBM as a noninvasive a

Marine-inspired near-infrared-activated multifunctional hydrogel with immunomodulatory properties for multidrug-resistant bacterial infected wound healing.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections in skin wounds have become a critical medical challenge due to the diminishing effectiveness of available antibiotics. Persistent bacterial infections, excessive reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS), and prolonged inflammatory responses significantly impede the wound healing process. To address these challenges, we propose a marine-inspired multifunctional 3AGM hydrogel designed to provide comprehensive antibacterial action, mitigate oxidative stress, and promote wound healing throughout the treatment process. The hydrogel features a cro

NIR photo-responsive injectable chitosan/hyaluronic acid hydrogels with controlled NO release for the treatment of MRSA infections.

Due to resistance to common antibiotics, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections pose a significant threat to human health. In this study, we developed an injectable, adhesive, and biocompatible hydrogel with multiple functions. Specifically, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) crosslinked with hyaluronic acid (HA) forms the primary framework of the hydrogel. Subsequently, polydopamine (PDA), 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-aminophenyl) porphyrin (TAPP), and L-arginine (L-Arg) are incorporated as a photothermal agent, photosensitizer, and nitric oxide (NO) donor, respectively, resulting

Janus Nanoprobe with Dual-Modal NIR-II Fluorescence/Photoacoustic Imaging for Precision Cancer Radiosensitizing Therapy.

The use of radiotherapy sensitizers has proven to be effective in overcoming tumor radiotherapy resistance and improving treatment efficacy. However, challenges such as poor biocompatibility and difficulty in accurately guiding tumor radiotherapy with high efficiency still persist. Herein, we propose a radiosensitizer with Janus nanostructure to address these issues by enabling dual-modal fluorescence (FL)/photoacoustic (PA) imaging in the second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 900-1700 nm) for precise and efficient tumor radiotherapy guidance. The Janus nanoprobes are fabricated by initially co

Niobium carbide-functionalized polylactic acid bone scaffold with near-infrared light-mediated shape memory and photothermal therapy for complex bone defects.

Complex bone defects, especially irregularly shaped ones, pose a significant challenge in bone tissue engineering. Bone scaffolds require not only a well-designed porous structure, appropriate mechanical properties, and biocompatibility but also effective photothermal therapy and enhanced shape adaptability. This study proposes a photothermal-functionalized polylactic acid/polyethylene glycol/niobium carbide nanoparticles (PLA/PEG/NbC) nanocomposite bone scaffold with antitumor and shape memory capabilities. The 3D-printed scaffold exhibits a periodically ordered porous structure and mechanica

Infrared-A (IR-A) modulates the p53 pathway and diurnal clock in human skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue in vivo.

Infrared-A (IR-A) radiation is thought to protect the skin from damage due to ultraviolet radiation and alter its carcinogenic potential, possibly by preventing keratinocyte apoptosis via p53 pathway modulation. Solar radiation, including IR-A, is a major factor in contributing to the entrainment of circadian rhythms. We examined the impacts of IR-A on the intrinsic clock and transcriptomics in individuals with different diurnal preference to understand the mechanisms by which IR-A acts in the human skin and subcutaneous adipose tissue. IR-A caused multiple gene expressional changes, mainly as

NIR-II light-driven in situ nanovaccine for cancer immunotherapy via lymph node migration-mediated accumulation.

Background: Tumor vaccines that combine tumor antigens with immune adjuvants offer a promising strategy for cancer immunotherapy. A particularly effective approach involves the in situ generation of tumor antigens within the tumor microenvironment and their subsequent delivery to the lymph nodes alongside immune adjuvants. However, Co-delivery of antigen and adjuvant on a single nano-platform remains facing some key problems, such as a single nanomedicine cannot simultaneously achieve antigen production, capture, and delivery to lymph nodes, as well as leakage of adjuvant due to destruction of

NIR-Triggered Metal-Polyphenol Nanoparticles Enhance HPV-Driven Cancer Immunotherapy via Immunogenic Cell Death and STING Sequential Activation.

HPV-associated malignancies consistently express E6/E7 oncoproteins, making these viral antigens prime targets for therapeutic vaccination. However, insufficient antigen exposure and presentation remain major obstacles for potent immunotherapy. Here, a novel metal-polyphenol network-coated human serum albumin nanoplatform (IMT@H) is engineered to co-deliver IR780 and manganese ions (Mn2+) to achieve enhanced immunogenic cell death (ICD) and cGAS-STING-dependent antigen presentation. The metal-polyphenol nanostructure facilitates the pH-responsive release of Mn2+, which subsequently initiates F

An endogenous oxygen self-supplied nanoplatform with GSH-depleted and NIR-II triggered electron-hole separation for enhanced photocatalytic anti-tumor therapy.

The use of artificial enzymes and light energy in photocatalytic therapy, a developing drug-free therapeutic approach, can treat malignant tumors in vivo. However, the relatively deficient oxygen concentration in the tumor microenvironment (TME) restrains their further tumor treatment capability. Herein, a novel nanoplatform with Cu7S4@Au nanocatalyst coated by MnO2 was successfully designed. After 1064 nm light irradiation, the designed nanocatalyst can promote the separation of light generated electron-hole pairs, resulting in ROS generation and tumor cell apoptosis. The MnO2 shelled nanopla

Enhanced Photothermal/Immunotherapy under NIR Irradiation Based on Hollow Mesoporous Responsive Nanomotor.

In this research, a hollow mesoporous responsive nanomotor was proposed for enhanced photothermal/immunotherapy under near infrared (NIR) irradiation. HA-HMCuS/AS as the nanomotor composed of hollow mesoporous copper sulfide (HMCuS) loaded with artesunate (AS) and hyaluronic acid (HA) was utilized to induce the polarization of tumor-associated macrophages. At the beginning, ResNet18 deep learning model was utilized to predict the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of HMCuS based on the morphology data set which was obtained from our conventional research. And then, we predicted that the

Thermal infrared directs host-seeking behaviour in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Mosquito-borne diseases affect hundreds of millions of people annually and disproportionately impact the developing world1,2. One mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, is a primary vector of viruses that cause dengue, yellow fever and Zika. The attraction of Ae. aegypti female mosquitos to humans requires integrating multiple cues, including CO2 from breath, organic odours from skin and visual cues, all sensed at mid and long ranges, and other cues sensed at very close range3-6. Here we identify a cue that Ae. aegypti use as part of their sensory arsenal to find humans. We demonstrate that Ae. aegy

Photoactive Thin-Film Structures of Curcumin, TiO2 and ZnO.

Curcumin is known as a biologically active compound and a possible antimicrobial agent. Here, we combine it with TiO2 and ZnO semiconductors, known for their photocatalytic properties, with an eye towards synergistic photo-harvesting and/or antimicrobial effects. We deposit different nanoscale multi-layer structures of curcumin, TiO2 and ZnO, by combining the solution-based spin-coating (S-C) technique and the gas-phase atomic layer deposition (ALD) and molecular layer deposition (MLD) thin-film techniques. As one of the highlights, we demonstrate for these multi-layer structures a red-shift i
