Psychosocial and cultural contributions to depression in women: considerations for women midlife and beyond.

BACKGROUND: Women share a greater burden of mood disorders than men and have twice the prevalence rate of depression. OBJECTIVE: To highlight some of the psychosocial and cultural contributions to depression in women. SUMMARY: Multiple factors contribute directly or interact to precipitate the onset of depression. Genetics, stress life events, previous history of depression, and cognitive factors have been shown to be significant risk factors for future depression episodes. Life stressors contribute to the onset of depression in both men and women, but particular stressors affect the genders

Cognitive impairment in elderly people. Predisposing factors and implications for experimental drug studies.

The consequences for cognitive functioning of normal aging, depression and dementia are well known. However, the borderline between normal and pathological cognitive aging is less well understood. Recently, it has been found that it is important to differentiate between 'successful', 'usual' and pathological cognitive aging. This article reviews existing views on this borderline. Recently, it has been found that health-related factors, or biological life events, may determine the rate of cognitive aging. Various different, but similar, diagnostic descriptions of age-related cognitive dysfuncti

The paradox of adult respiratory distress syndrome in neonates.

Six full-term newborn infants are described who suffered from severe adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The triggering event was intrauterine/perinatal asphyxia in five, and group B streptococcal (GBS) septicemia in three. All had severe respiratory distress/failure and were ventilated mechanically with high concentrations of inspired oxygen and positive end-expiratory pressure. Radiography of the chest showed dense bilateral consolidation with air bronchograms and reduced lung volume. Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH) was documented in all cases. The coincidence of ARDS and PPH

Unilateral MR-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy thalamotomy for refractory multiple sclerosis tremor: 12-month outcomes in four patients.

BACKGROUND: Tremor affects many people with multiple sclerosis (MS), is frequently disabling and responds poorly to medication. Deep brain stimulation, gamma-knife radiosurgery and MR-guided focused ultrasound are options, but each has constraints. MR-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) is a hardware-free stereotactic thalamotomy providing real-time thermometry, its role in MS tremor is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To describe 12-month clinical, safety and imaging outcomes after unilateral MRgLITT thalamotomy for refractory MS tremor. METHODS: Single-centre, consecutive case series of

Reductions in chronic pain cognitions and impact following intensive trauma and pain rehabilitation treatments: A case study.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects millions of Americans and is frequently associated with chronic pain. Intensive delivery models for PTSD treatment help patients quickly recover, but their effect on chronic pain outcomes is understudied. In this investigation, we evaluated how intensive narrative exposure therapy (HI-NET) was associated with pain outcomes for participants with chronic pain and PTSD. METHOD: A small treatment-seeking sample (N = 8, 6 females; range of traumatic events: 5-15) recruited in 2022-2023 participated in six daily HI-NET sessions. All participan

The Relationship Between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Post-Traumatic Growth: A Systematic Review.

Background: Post-traumatic growth (PTG) refers to positive psychological changes resulting from the struggle with highly challenging or traumatic life events. Psychosocial interventions have demonstrated efficacy in promoting psychological well-being in the aftermath of traumatic experiences. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is among the most extensively studied such interventions, aligning with the PTG model's prerequisites for growth. Objective: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy of CBT and CBT-based interventions in promoting PTG. Methods: A systematic review was

A feasibility study on the use of cranial nerve non-invasive neuromodulation to improve affected arm function in people in the chronic stage of a stroke.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stroke survivors are often left with residual arm muscle weakness impeding arm function, daily life activities and quality of life. Exercise is one of the main post-stroke interventions to improve arm function, with cranial nerve non-invasive neuromodulation (CN-NINM) emerging as a potentially interesting complementary therapy to enhance its benefits. Only one study has evaluated the impact of CN-NINM combined with a lower-limb training program on improved balance in subacute stroke survivors. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and explore the effects on mo

[Ethics of care and new profiles of the woman].

INTRODUCTION: In health professions listening represents an essential condition for any cure relation. Learning to listen is thus neither easy nor granted. It requires the ability to put oneself in somebody else's place, maintaining self-possession of judgement and the ability of evaluating events. PROBLEM ANALYSIS: In health professions women have always occupied a privileged position for their sensitiveness and their ability of giving meaning even to everyday life. Empathy is the privileged way women have of getting to know, understand and take care of people. They follow a feminine style w

Low-intensity shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction.

RATIONALE: Low-intensity shockwave therapy (LiSWT) is a new way of treating erectile dysfunction using sound waves to help improve blood flow to the penis. No existing systematic reviews comparing LiSWT to placebo or other therapies for treating erectile dysfunction have used rigorous Cochrane methodology. Many existing studies appear to be of poor methodological quality, and several trials are ongoing, reflecting an evolving evidence base. Therefore, it is unclear whether LiSWT truly helps men who have erectile dysfunction. Furthermore, there is very limited focus on patient-important outcome

Structure and dynamics of the course of chronic non-infectious somatic diseases in patients during war events on the territory of Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: The work studied and compared the dynamics of changes in the course of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and somatized disorders in Ukrainian population, in the 1st period before war (October 2021 - February 2022) and 2nd period during the war (March -July 2022). The choice of the study of the above-mentioned nosology is due, first of all, to the increase in cases of referrals to outpatient doctors regarding hypertensive crises, the increase in the frequency of patients' complaints about the lability of glycemic indicators during routine monitoring of glucose levels with ambulatory gl

Model-based Dose Individualization of Sunitinib in Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors.

PURPOSE: Various biomarkers have been proposed for sunitinib therapy in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). However, the lack of "real-life" comparative studies hampers the selection of the most appropriate one. We, therefore, set up a pharmacometric simulation framework to compare each proposed biomarker. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Models describing relations between sunitinib exposure, adverse events (hand-foot syndrome, fatigue, hypertension, and neutropenia), soluble VEGFR (sVEGFR)-3, and overall survival (OS) were connected to evaluate the differences in survival and adverse events under di

Body weight management in overweight and obese breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that overweight and obese breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of cancer recurrence and have higher all-cause mortality. Obesity has an impact on breast cancer survivor's quality of life (QOL) and increases the risk of longer-term morbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Many cancer guidelines recommend survivors maintain a healthy weight but there is a lack of evidence regarding which weight loss method to recommend. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of different body weight loss approaches in breast cancer survivors who ar
