Spurious sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim resistance of Salmonella typhi.

Several studies have identified thymidine excess in susceptibility test media as the cause of spurious resistance of various bacteria to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. We document the phenomenon in Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi-A and demonstrate its occurrence in 3 of 17 (18%) lots of Mueller-Hinton agars now in use in major medical laboratories in Lima, Peru. The findings are particularly significant because sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim is an important alternative to chloramphenicol or ampicillin for the treatment of typhoid and paratyphoid fevers.

Synergistic action of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole for Nocardia asteroides: efficacious therapy in five patients.

Eighteen isolates of Nocardia asteroides were tested for in vitro susceptibility to trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) alone and in various combinations using disc and paper strip diffusion tests. TMP-SMZ showed synergistic action for two-thirds of teh nocardia isolates tested. Five patients with Nocardia pneumonia were treated with TMP-SMZ and all were cured. Four of the patients' isolates were tested and all showed synergistic patterns of inhibition with the spaced disc and paper strip methods. The agar diffusion disc and synergy tests of TMP-SMZ appear to correlate with clinical

[Microbiological substantiation of the use of erycycline in the therapy of chronic pyoderma].

Sensitivity to tetracycline, erythromycin and erycycline was studied in 60 strains of Staph. aureus isolated from the foci of chronic pyoderma and nasopharynx of 30 patients suffering from chronic relapsing pyoderma for 2-5 years. The isolates were 2.6 and 3.2 times more sensitive to erycycline than to erythromycin and tetracycline, respectively. This substantiated the advisability of erycycline use in combined therapy of patients with chronic pyoderma. The staphylococcal strains isolated from the nasopharynx were less sensitive to the antibiotics than the strains isolated from the foci of the

[Antibiotic resistance of Shigella strains isolated in Cádiz (author's transl)].

The incidence of shigellosis at the Residencia Sanitaria Fernando Zamacola (Cáciz, Spain) and the antibiotic sensitivity of 94 strains of Shigella sonnei and 40 strains of Shigella flexneri, isolated during the year 1979, has been studied taking into account the present status of strain resistance to the major antibiotics. Three epidemic bouts of shigellosis were detected: one in february by Shigella sonnei (16 cases), and two others in august-september and november due to Shigella flexneri (43 and 29 cases). Children 2 to 5 years old had the highest incidence of Shigella infection. Almost all

In vitro susceptibility of Cutibacterium acnes to dalbavancin: comparison between gradient test and the agar dilution reference method.

BACKGROUND: Cutibacterium acnes, a human commensal, occasionally causes infections requiring long-term antibiotic treatment, including periprosthetic joint infections. Dalbavancin is a new lipoglycopeptide that allows intermittent dosing because of its exceptionally long half-life. However, data on susceptibility of C. acnes to dalbavancin are lacking, and no EUCAST breakpoints have been defined. OBJECTIVES: To determine the MIC distribution of C. acnes for dalbavancin, and to compare the gradient test to the agar dilution reference method. METHODS: C. acnes isolates were obtained from tissu

Cross-susceptibility among tetracyclines in Gram-positive infections: microbiological basis, EUCAST/CLSI guidance and clinical implications for doxycycline use.

BACKGROUND: Tetracyclines remain useful options for Gram-positive infections, particularly when prolonged oral therapy is required. Doxycycline is attractive because of its oral bioavailability and tolerability, but many susceptibility systems report tetracycline or minocycline rather than doxycycline, creating uncertainty about within-class extrapolation. OBJECTIVES: To examine the microbiological, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD), interpretive and clinical evidence supporting cross-susceptibility among tetracycline-class agents in clinically relevant Gram-positive organisms and to de

Multipathogen antimicrobial resistance in a Romanian tertiary-care hospital: a retrospective antibiogram analysis, January-July 2025.

Routine microbiology data can show not only isolated resistance events but also the wider hospital ecology in which antimicrobial resistance (AMR) emerges. We analyzed the complete January-July 2025 antibiogram export from a Romanian tertiary-care hospital, along with a targeted extended-testing file. The scope was deliberately broader than a single-organism carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae analysis. We performed a retrospective descriptive analysis using 3,270 antibiogram records from 3,012 patient identifiers. Organisms, sample types, resistance labels, and extended-test results we

Extreme copper tolerance and genomic adaptation in early-stage marine biofilms.

Biofouling, the accumulation of unwanted organisms on submerged assets, presents an ongoing challenge within the maritime industry. Conventional methods to inhibit growth rely on copper-laden (≤75% copper compounds) antifouling coatings. However, the efficacy of these coatings is declining due to the broad emergence of copper-tolerant species. Here, we investigated the mechanisms underlying this decline in antifouling performance. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) panels coated with a commercial copper ablative paint were deployed in the Chesapeake Bay to collect early-stage biofilms; uncoated PVC pane

Relationship Between Chemical Structures of Phytochemicals, Synthetic Phytochemical Analogs, and Antibiotics and Their In Vitro Growth-Inhibitory Effects Against Colorectal Cancer-Causing Bacteria.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) has been increasingly associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis and the presence of specific bacterial pathogens. This study evaluated the in vitro growth-inhibitory activity of 18 biologically active compounds, including phytochemicals, synthetic analogs, and clinically used antibiotics, against CRC-associated bacterial strains. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined using the broth microdilution method and analyzed in relation to chemical structure. Conventional antibiotics, particularly tetracycline and ciprofloxacin, exhibited the strongest antibact

Associating Mycobacterium tuberculosis genomic variants with minimum inhibitory concentrations to delamanid and pretomanid.

Emerging resistance to delamanid (DLM) and pretomanid (Pa) threatens drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) treatment outcomes. The lack of rapid molecular diagnostics, due to limited knowledge of resistance-conferring mutations, along with standardization challenges for critical concentrations (CC) in phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (pDST) hinder resistance detection. Here, we explore the correlation between minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and genomic variants of DLM and Pa resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Seventeen Mtb isolates phenotypically resistant to DLM dete

Antibacterial activity and mechanism of mangosteen extract garcinone D against Bacillus cereus.

This study systematically investigated the antibacterial activity and underlying mechanism of garcinone D, a xanthone isolated and purified from mangosteen, against B. cereus. The results demonstrated that garcinone D exhibited significant inhibitory activity, with a MIC90 of 3.12 μg/mL, which is markedly lower than that of the commercial preservative ε-polylysine (MIC90 = 25 μg/mL). Furthermore, garcinone D produced a larger inhibition zone diameter. In a rice preservation model, garcinone D effectively reduced the total bacterial count. Mechanistic studies revealed that garcinone D exerts it

Unveiling the antibacterial effects of endolysin POE and holin Hol8 from Pseudomonas otitidis phage vB_PotS-PotUPM1.

The global rise of antibiotic resistance poses a major threat to human health, driving the urgent search for novel antimicrobial strategies. Phage-derived proteins, such as endolysins and holins, represent promising alternatives to conventional antibiotics. Endolysins enzymatically degrade bacterial peptidoglycan but are often ineffective against Gram-negative bacteria due to the outer membrane. Holins, by disrupting cytoplasmic membranes, may bypass this barrier and provide a distinct antibacterial mechanism. In this study, a phage-derived endolysin (POE) and holin (Hol8) from Pseudomonas pha

Anti-quorum, anti biofilm activity of FDA approved drugs against P. aeruginosa: in silico and in vitro studies.

P. aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that causes various nosocomial infections. The ability of P. aeruginosa to form biofilms is one of the main factors contributing to its pathogenicity. Due to biofilm formation, bacteria get embedded in it and is able to withstand extreme environmental conditions like chemicals, UV, temperature, pH, salinity, and antibiotics. Biofilm formation is an important virulence factor associated with quorum sensing (QS), which is a cell-to-cell communication system that is influenced by cell density. P. aeruginosa is a notorious pathogen that is known to cause
