Peritoneal epithelial lesions associated with proliferative serous tumours of ovary.

The peritoneal epithelial lesions in 40 cases of proliferating ovarian serous tumour are described. The lesions were varied and of both neoplastic and non-neoplastic form. The most common was serous tumour similar to that in the associated ovarian neoplasm. Tumour of this type was present in some or all of the peritoneal lesions in 77.5% of cases. In nearly two-thirds, the tumour was superficial; in the rest it invaded omentum. Occasionally, the infiltrating tumour was poorly differentiated. Benign tubular lesions resembling endosalpingiosis occurred in 16 (40%) of the 40 cases, but in seven i

Intraureteral tumor demonstrated by computed tomography.

Two cases of papillary carcinoma of the bladder are presented in which the ureter could not be demonstrated by standard radiographic techniques. Computed tomography (CT) allowed identification of the tumor filled ureter. Intraureteral papillary tumor has a radiographic density (CT number) above that of water but less than that of the enveloping ureter.

Photodynamic therapy: The minimally invasive surgical intervention for advanced and/or recurrent tongue base carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: The management of tongue base carcinoma continues to be a major challenge in head and neck oncology. Our aim in this prospective study was to evaluate the outcome following ultrasound-guided interstitial photodynamic therapy (US-iPDT) of stage IV tongue base carcinoma patients. Patients' reports on quality of life with clinical and radiological evaluation were the main end point parameters used to assess the outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-one consecutive patients referred to the UCLH Head and Neck Centre for treatment of advanced and/or recurrent tongue base cancer were i

A Unique Surgical Case of Mixed Metaplastic Breast Carcinoma With Heterologous Mesenchymal Differentiation and Conventional Adenocarcinomatous Elements.

Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MBC) is very rare among all invasive breast carcinomas, accounting for less than 1.0% of them. MBCs are classified into five subtypes, including mixed MBC - where the mix might be multiple metaplastic elements or a mixture of epithelial and mesenchymal elements. Overall survival for mixed MBC tends to correlate with a significantly worse outcome. Therefore, an early accurate diagnosis and surgical treatment for mixed MBCs must allow for an improved quality of life and better prognosis. However, there have not been many recently published papers describing the deta

Matrix metalloproteinases expression in spontaneous canine histiocytic sarcomas and its xenograft model.

Canine histiocytic sarcoma (HS) represents a malignant neoplastic disorder often with a rapid and progressive clinical course. A better understanding of the interaction between tumor cells and the local microenvironment may provide new insights into mechanisms of tumor growth and metastasis. The influence of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors (TIMPs) on tumor angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis has been detailed in previous studies. In addition, inflammatory cells infiltrating neoplasms especially tumor associated macrophages (TAM) may contribute significantly to tumor pro

Quantification of STAT3 and VEGF expression for molecular diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Axillary lymph node metastasis is associated with increased risk of regional recurrence, distant metastasis, and poor survival in breast malignant neoplasm. Expression of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is significantly associated with tumor formation, migration, and invasion in various cancers. In addition, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression could promote angiogenesis and increase the risk of tumorigenesis. To determine correlations among STAT3 expression, VEGF, and clinicopathological data on lymph node involvement in breast cancer pat

Plexin-B1 silencing inhibits ovarian cancer cell migration and invasion.

BACKGROUND: Elevated Plexin-B1 expression has been found in diverse human cancers and in non-neoplastic tissues, and it mediates diverse biological and pathological activities. However, whether or not Plexin-B1 expression is involved in human ovarian tumors remains unclear. In the present study, Plexin-B1 expression was explored in benign and malignant human ovarian tumor tissues. In addition, the impact of Plexin-B1 expression on ovarian cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion were investigated in vitro. METHODS: Plexin-B1 expression was analyzed in normal and benign ovarian tissue

Incidence of Endocrine and Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency after Minimally Invasive Parenchyma-Sparing Pancreatectomy.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive parenchyma-sparing pancreatectomy (MI-PSP) is being increasingly adopted for benign and low-grade pancreatic tumors. We sought to evaluate whether this approach is associated with reduced incidence of postoperative diabetes mellitus (DM) and pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI). STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective single-institution analysis of patients undergoing minimally invasive pancreatectomy between 2006 and 2024 for benign and low-grade pancreatic tumors, defined as localized neoplasms with a low risk of metastases. Propensity score matching (1:

Pathological Classification and Clinical Characteristics of Growth Hormone-Secreting PitNETs.

INTRODUCTION: Acromegaly/gigantism is a rare disease primarily caused by growth hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs). With the update in the WHO 5th edition classification of pituitary tumors, particularly the introduction of the novel PIT1/SF1 co-expressing tumor subtype, our understanding of these neoplasms has significantly advanced. However, systematic pathological classification and clinical characterization studies of GH-secreting PitNETs remain relatively scarce. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 143 patients with acromegaly/gigantism who under

Prospective Validation of an Ultrasound Capsule-Based Model for Predicting Follicular Thyroid Carcinoma Without High-Risk Features.

BACKGROUND: The surgical indications for follicular thyroid neoplasms (FTNs) remain controversial due to challenges in the preoperative follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) diagnosis. We aimed to explore the sonographic features of the FTN capsule and establish a prediction model for diagnosing FTC without high-risk features. METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled consecutive adult patients with FTN. Patients presenting with extrathyroidal extension or extracapsular angioinvasion on preoperative imaging were excluded. Intraoperative ultrasound (US)-guided incisions were conducted in 20

Comparison between solid pseudopapillary neoplasms of the pancreas and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with cystic changes using computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms of the pancreas (SPN) share similar imaging findings with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with cystic changes (PDAC with cystic changes), which may result in unnecessary surgery. AIM: To investigate the value of computed tomography (CT) in differentiation of SPN from PDAC with cystic changes. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical and imaging findings of 32 patients diagnosed with SPN and 14 patients diagnosed with PDAC exhibiting cystic changes, confirmed through pathological diagnosis. Quantitative and qualitative analysis was

Malignancy risk factors and prognostic variables of pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasms in Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) represent one of the precursor lesions of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, and their detection has been facilitated by advances in preoperative imaging. Due primarily to the rarity of MCNs, however, there is limited knowledge regarding the prognostic variables and high-risk factors for malignant transformation. A more comprehensive and nuanced approach is necessary to fill this gap and provide a basis for improved treatment decisions and patient outcomes. AIM: To investigate the high-risk factors associated with malignant MCNs and to ex

Ki-67 expression in gastric cancer. Results from a prospective study with long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The characteristics of the cellular kinetic reflect the aggressiveness of the tumors and even their prognosis, many studies proving the correlation between the increased proliferation activity and a poor prognosis in a variety of neoplasms. AIM: The analysis of immunohistochemical expression of the Ki-67 antigen using the monoclonal antibody MIB1 in 61 patients with gastric cancer, the correlation with clinicopathological factors and the prognosis of the patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used the primary MIB1 antibody pre-diluted, using the LSAB technique, DAB visualization. The

[Fertility preservation in gynecologic cancer].

Recent advances in both the staging and the understanding of the natural history of gynecologic cancers have led to new approaches to treatment. The treatment can now often be tailored to the extent of the disease, and preservation of child-bearing ability and/or sexual function may be possible for certain women with early invasive cancers of the ovary, cervix, endometrium, vagina and vulva. Better understanding of the tumour biology and clinicopathologic factors of prognostic significance will allow for individualization of treatment. Management of patients with early gynecologic cancer shoul
