A prospective study of children with large congenital melanocytic naevi (CMNs) is in progress. Its aims are to observe the natural history and inheritance of CMNs, to record associated pathologies, and eventually to evaluate the effects of treatment. Information is obtained by patient-completed questionnaires and clinical assessment. One hundred and thirty-three children have been followed for a total of 452 patient years. In a case-control study in the Midlands of England, 195 subjects with superficial spreading or nodular melanoma were compared to age- and sex-matched controls chosen from all inpatients or outpatients in hospitals serving the defined source population. The appearance of C.T. of the head in 11 cases of the linear sebaceous naevus syndrome are presented. From these it is argued that the pathology represents a disorder of neuronal migration and organisation rather than differentiation. Since three of the cases had evidence of CNS tumour in addition to two in the literature, it would appear that a further aspect of this disorder is a failure of growth constraint. This is paralleled by a similar tendency in the skin lesion which should be considered premalignant. Normal intelligence is rare in this condition and co-exists only with a normal C.T.

We studied the ocular features of NFT in 77 patients (ages 5 weeks to 69 years) among whom the diagnosis was made by nonophthalmic parameters.
