Chiari I malformation in patients with FG syndrome.

OBJECT: The FG syndrome (FGS) is a common, heterogeneous group of clinically indistinguishable X-linked disorders comprising congenital hypotonia, macrocephaly, psychomotor delay, abnormalities in sensory integration, agenesis of corpus callosum, an unusual personality with behavior abnormalities, and disturbances of gastrointestinal function. On magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, some patients have evidence of tonsillar ectopia. The authors describe the incidence of Chiari I malformation in patients with FGS and attempt to determine the optimal treatment of these patients. METHODS: The authors

Preschool children with disruptive behavior: three-year outcome as a function of adaptive disability.

A significant discrepancy between intelligence and daily adaptive functioning, or adaptive disability (AD), has been previously found to be a associated with significant psychological morbidity in preschool children with disruptive behavior (DB). The utility of AD as a predictor of later developmental risks was examined in a 3-year longitudinal study of normal (N = 43) and DB preschool children. The DB children were grouped into those with AD (DB+AD; N = 28) and those without AD (DB-only; N = 98). All children were followed with annual evaluations to the end of second grade. Both DB groups dem

[Amplitude modulation following response (AMFR)--a method for objective frequency specific audiologic diagnosis].

BACKGROUND: The objective evaluation of the hearing threshold below 1kHz by means of early auditory potentials leads to problems caused by the discrepancy between the required steep rise edge of stimulus and the frequency specificity of the potentials. Therefore the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential role of the AMFR as a diagnostic tool for the assessment of hearing below 1 kHz. METHOD: The threshold of the AMFR was compared to the behavioral threshold in 13 normal hearing subjects and 46 patients with hearing loss. The stimulus used was an amplitude-modulated tone at the carrie

Challenges with effective removal of surfactants from monoclonal antibody formulations.

Buffer exchange is a critical step in biologics development, playing a pivotal role in removing contaminants, adjusting sample conditions, and facilitating compatibility studies. The efficiency of centrifugal concentrators for polysorbate removal was compared to a two-step approach involving a surfactant removal column followed by buffer exchange. Trastuzumab-pkrb from Herzuma® was used. While a 30 kDa centrifugal concentrator was ineffective in polysorbate removal, a 50 kDa concentrator caused partial removal. Surfactant removal column proved more effective in removing polysorbates. Buffer ex

Development of Centrifugal Partition Chromatography for the Purification of Antibody-Drug Conjugates.

Monoclonal antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are an expanding therapeutic class of biomolecules for which relatively few analytical and preparative separation options exist. Purification of ADCs with a specific drug antibody ratio is even more challenging. We report the first application of countercurrent separation (CCS) to this problem. An ADC mimic was successfully chromatographed using an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) consisting of PEG 1000/sodium citrate pH 7.5/water, 17.75/17.75/64.50 (w/w/w). Notably, different partition coefficients (K) in this ATPS for the ADC mimic (0.09 < K < 0.16)

Antibiotic-Resistant ESKAPE Pathogens and COVID-19: The Pandemic beyond the Pandemic.

Antibacterial resistance is a renewed public health plague in modern times, and the COVID-19 pandemic has rekindled this problem. Changes in antibiotic prescribing behavior, misinformation, financial hardship, environmental impact, and governance gaps have generally enhanced the misuse and improper access to antibiotics during the COVID-19 pandemic. These determinants, intersected with antibacterial resistance in the current pandemic, may amplify the potential for a future antibacterial resistance pandemic. The occurrence of infections with multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant

Mathematical analysis of hybrid mediated blood flow in stenosis narrow arteries.

In this paper the behavior of flow of blood under stenosis suppositions is studied. Nanoparticles of Ag and Cu are being used with blood as base fluid. The problem governing equations are modeled into PDE's, which are transformed into set of ODE's with the help of useful similarity transformation. We investigated the solution numerically for various parameters on temperature and velocity distribution and shown in the form of tables and graphs. It is found that the velocity of blood increases while the temperature curve goes down by increasing the concentration of nanoparticles and also tempera

Complementary Resistive Switching Behavior in Tetraindolyl Derivative-Based Memory Devices.

Complementary resistive switching (CRS) devices are more advantageous compared to bipolar resistive switching (BRS) devices for memory applications as they can minimize the sneak path problem observed in the case of BRS having a crossbar array structure. Here, we report the CRS behavior of 1,4-bis(di(1H-indol-3-yl)methyl)benzene (Indole1) molecules. Our earlier study revealed that Au/Indole1/Indium tin oxide (ITO) devices showed BRS under ambient conditions. However, the present investigations revealed that when the device is exposed to 353 K or higher temperatures, dynamic evolution of the Au

Mental health literacy regarding eating disorders in female Japanese university students.

Mental health literacy (MHL) refers to one's knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders. MHL is necessary for the prevention and early detection of eating disorders, but little research exists on the MHL of Japanese people. This paper aims to reveal the degree of MHL about eating disorders in the Japanese individuals most susceptible to them (namely, female university students). Female Japanese university students were surveyed with a self-report questionnaire, using the Japanese versions of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa vignettes. Most participants responded that the main problem des

Bioethical Issues and Secondary Prevention for Nonoffending Individuals with Pedophilia.

Child sexual abuse is a global problem with significant emotional, psychological, and financial implications to victims, perpetrators, and society. Most child sexual abuse prevention programs target young children or those who have already engaged in abusive behavior, in order to prevent further offending. There are numerous secondary prevention programs targeting individuals at-risk of various health conditions in an effort to reduce the likelihood they will go on to experience a particular illness or disease. Considerable research exists regarding the risk factors for engaging in child sexua

Voluntary urination control by brainstem neurons that relax the urethral sphincter.

Voluntary urination ensures that waste is eliminated when safe and socially appropriate, even without a pressing urge. Uncontrolled urination, or incontinence, is a common problem with few treatment options. Normal urine release requires a small region in the brainstem known as Barrington's nucleus (Bar), but specific neurons that relax the urethral sphincter and enable urine flow are unknown. Here we identify a small subset of Bar neurons that control the urethral sphincter in mice. These excitatory neurons express estrogen receptor 1 (BarESR1), project to sphincter-relaxing interneurons in t

Young-Onset Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

Young-onset (< 65 years) dementia is a challenging clinical problem. A 61-year-old man visited our clinic because of a 2-year history of mild cognitive impairment of the executive disorder type. He was initially suspected of having young-onset Alzheimer's disease due to the lack of motor signs or hippocampal atrophy by conventional brain MRI. However, he proved to have anosmia, erectile dysfunction, hypersexuality, constipation, REM sleep behavior disorder, and emotional lability; imaging findings included positive brain perfusion SPECT, nigrosome MRI, DAT scan, and MIBG myocardial scintigraph

[Socio-anthropological perspective of the under nutrition care of cancer patients].

The diet of the cancer patient is a major focus of prevention and treatment strategy of the recent plans that fight against cancer. It is sometimes reduced to a rapid series of more or less general advice, often interfered by other sources of information, more or less conventional. In this pathological situation where the nutritional status of the patient is paramount, it seems crucial to understand the different modalities of how the food behavior is implemented. This article describes the construction modalities of the cancer eater decisions. The goal of the socio-anthropological analysis pr

Life skills training: preventing substance misuse by enhancing individual and social competence.

Research concerning the etiology and prevention of substance misuse has led to the development of preventive interventions that are theory-based and effective. One such approach, Life Skills Training (LST), targets key etiologic factors using a conceptual framework derived from social learning theory and problem behavior theory. LST has been extensively tested in a series of randomized trials and found effective in preventing the use/misuse of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other psychoactive drugs. Research demonstrates that it is effective when implemented under different delivery conditio…

Family functioning and risk factors for disordered eating.

This study investigated whether any of seven factors of family dysfunction predicted five risk factors for developing eating disorders in young adult women. Participants completed demographic questions, the McMaster Family Assessment Device (Epstein, Baldwin, & Bishop, 1983) and the Setting Conditions for Anorexia Nervosa Scale (Slade & Dewey, 1986) online. Five stepwise multiple regressions evaluated whether FAD scores predicted any of the eating disorder risk factors. Unhealthy affective responsiveness predicted general dissatisfaction and social and personal anxiety, and unhealthy general f

The problem with self-forgiveness: forgiving the self deters readiness to change among gamblers.

Self-forgiveness is generally understood to be a mechanism that restores and improves the self. In the current study, we examine the possible deleterious consequences of forgiving the self among gamblers-specifically in regard to gamblers' readiness to change their problematic behavior. At a large Canadian university, 110 young adult gamblers' level of gambling pathology was assessed, along with their readiness to change and self-forgiveness for their gambling. Participants were 33 females and 75 males (2 unspecified) with a mean age of 20.33. Results revealed that level of pathology (at risk
