Breathing exercise combined with cognitive behavioural intervention improves sleep quality and heart rate variability in major depression.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a cognitive behavioural intervention combined with a breathing relaxation exercise on sleep quality and heart rate variability in patients with major depression. BACKGROUND: Depression is a long-lasting illness with significant effects not only in individuals themselves, but on their family, work and social relationships as well. Cognitive behavioural therapy is considered to be an effective treatment for major depression. Breathing relaxation may improve heart rate variability, but few studies have comprehensively e

Cognitive functions, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances: assessment of nonmotor features in young patients with essential tremor.

There is a growing amount of evidence to suggest that besides motor features, patients with essential tremor (ET) may exhibit significant nonmotor features, such as mild cognitive deficits, fatigue, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and sleep disturbances. The goal of this study was to examine nonmotor features in young patients with ET and their impact on quality of life. 45 patients (24.55 ± 7.16 years old) with ET and 35 controls were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Scale, Fatigue Severity Scale, and Short Form-3

Significant sleep disturbances in euthymic bipolar patients.

OBJECTIVE: A growing amount of data suggests that sleep dysfunction is frequently observed in bipolar disorder (BD) patients even when they do not fulfill the criteria for major mood episodes. Thus, we performed a case-control study assessing sleep status in a group of euthymic BD patients and a group of health controls. METHODS: A total of 209 subjects (104 health controls and 105 BD patients) were enrolled in the study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used for sleep assessment. Inclusion criteria for the BD group were a diagnosis of BD, following DSM-IV-TR criteria, according

Increased prevalence of sleep disorders in chronic headache: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of sleep disorders in chronic headache patients and to evaluate the role of psychiatric comorbidity in the association between chronic headache and sleep complaints. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of sleep disorders in chronic headache has been seldom investigated, although from the earliest description chronic headache has been associated with sleep disturbances. On the contrary, mood disorders are commonly associated with both sleep disturbances and chronic headache--each of which are, in turn, core features of mood disorders. T

Sleep complaints: snoring and daytime sleepiness in pregnant and pre-eclamptic women.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To examine whether snoring and sleepiness are linked in pregnancy and pre-eclampsia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 167 healthy and 82 pre-eclamptic women in the third trimester of pregnancy and 160 non-pregnant women. Subjects and their partners completed a sleep questionnaire. Height, weight, neck circumferences and blood pressure were recorded for all. RESULTS: Pregnant and pre-eclamptic women were (mean +/-SD) 36+/-3.6 and 36+/-3 weeks pregnant, respectively. Age and height did not differ significantly between groups (P>0.2), but pre-eclamptic women were heavi

Incidence of sleep disorders in children with presumed normal variant short stature.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether unrecognized obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is present in some children diagnosed with normal variant short stature. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-eight children aged less than 15 years and previously diagnosed with familial short stature or constitutional delay of growth were identified from the endocrine clinic database. A validated, standardized questionnaire designed to screen for symptoms of sleep disorders in children was mailed to the parents of eligible children. RESULTS: Fifty-three questionnaires were returned. Fifteen of these had an abnormal score

Nocturnal panic attacks.

The panic-respiration connection has been presented with increasing evidences in the literature. We report three panic disorder patients with nocturnal panic attacks with prominent respiratory symptoms, the overlapping of the symptoms with the sleep apnea syndrome and a change of the diurnal panic attacks, from spontaneous to situational pattern. The implication of these findings and awareness to the distinct core of the nocturnal panic attacks symptoms may help to differentiate them from sleep disorders and the search for specific treatment.

[Nocturia and nocturnal polyuria in the elderly. Treatment essential for increasing patients' quality of life and decreasing the risk of injury].

Nocturia, i.e. nocturnal voiding episodes, is a symptom which can occur at all ages, but there is an age-related increase in both men and women. Both health and quality of life are deteriorated by nocturia. Sleep is disturbed, with daytime sleepiness and reduced well-being as consequences. The risk of fall injuries is increased among elderly persons who need to get up several times at night for toilet visits. Nocturia is associated with an increase in nocturnal urine output, and an increased number of nocturnal voids indicates a shift of urine output from the daytime to the night. One of the a

Long-term risperidone for pervasive developmental disorder: efficacy, tolerability, and discontinuation.

To investigate the safety (e.g., weight gain, liver function, extrapyramidal side effects, and seizures) and efficacy of the long-term use of risperidone in children and adolescents and to ascertain the effects of drug withdrawal in a semi-naturalistic prospective, subjects with autism or pervasive developmental disorders not otherwise specified (PDDNOS) were treated with risperidone for 6 months after which parents were given the option of continuing for a further 6 months (final assessment at 12 months). Behavioral rating included Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS), Child Psychiatric Ratin

Daytime somnolence in myotonic dystrophy.

Somnolence in myotonic dystrophy (DM) has not been measured using a reliable daytime somnolence scale. The aim of this study was to compare somnolence in DM patients with healthy controls and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) patients using such a scale and to compare this with potential contributory factors. We investigated 35 subjects with adult-onset DM, 16 healthy controls and 13 CMT controls. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was the principal measurement of daytime somnolence. Nocturnal sleep was assessed using a sleep diary. Other assessments measured daytime respiratory function, cogn

Differential diagnosis of episodic symptoms.

Because nonepileptic disorders may cause episodic and paroxysmal symptoms that resemble epilepsy, these conditions and syndromes must be considered in the differential diagnosis or when antiepileptic drugs are ineffective. Gastroesophageal reflux usually presents as recurrent vomiting in infants and young children. A small subgroup of infants develop apnea and cyanosis accompanied by posturing of the limbs, deviation of the eyes, or opisthotonos, which leads to the incorrect diagnosis of epilepsy. Breathholding spells and pallid infantile syncope, common in infants and young children, may also

Polysomnography reveals unexpectedly high rates of organic sleep disorders in patients with prediagnosed primary insomnia.

OBJECTIVE: It is a matter of debate whether patients with primary insomnia require a polysomnographic examination in order to exclude specific sleep disorders such as sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) or periodic limb movements (PLM). Using a prospective design, we investigated the prevalence of organic sleep disorders by means of polysomnography (PSG) in a series of patients who were previously diagnosed with primary insomnia. This diagnosis was based on a clinical exam and an ambulatory monitoring device or previous PSG. METHODS: Seventy-seven women and 16 men (mean age 55.12 ± 13.21 years) who we

Association between post-traumatic stress disorder and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: Exploring the role of internet addiction and sleep disturbances.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has substantially altered adolescents' learning and social environments, potentially increasing their vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Although PTSD is a recognized risk factor for NSSI, limited evidence exists regarding their association and underlying mechanisms during the pandemic's prolonged phase. This study examined the relationship between PTSD and NSSI and suggested exploratory evidence of potential pathways involving internet addiction and sleep disturbances. METHODS: In June 2022, stratified

Sleep Disturbances Increase the Impact of Working Memory Deficits on Learning Problems in Adolescents with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Sleep disturbances (SD) are prevalent in individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Less is known about the effects of SD on cognition and learning in adolescents with high-functioning ASD (HF-ASD). Adolescents with HF-ASD (N = 96) were evaluated for the relationships of SD to working memory and learning problems. Results found SD to modify the relationship between working memory and learning problems. Working memory deficits were associated with learning problems among those with SD, while not among those without SD. SD and working memory deficits should be targeted in interve

Visual hallucinations in the differential diagnosis of parkinsonism.

Visual hallucinations (VH) occur commonly in Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) but are reported much less frequently in other neurodegenerative causes of parkinsonism, such as progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple system atrophy and corticobasal degeneration syndrome. This clinical sign may be helpful when considering the differential diagnosis of patients with parkinsonism. The observation that VH may be specific to Lewy body pathology probably reflects a greater vulnerability of the visual systems to PD and DLB neurodegeneration compared with other diseases. Top

Physicians appeals on the dangers of mobile communication--what is the evidence? Assessment of public health data.

In October 2002 German physicians appealed to persons in the field of health care, politicians and the public with "great concern" ("Freiburger Appell", "Appeal of Freiburg") claiming "soaring incidences of symptoms and diseases in the general population" to be causally related to the "commence of radio (wave) burden", i.e. due to mobile radio technology. This first example was followed by several further appeals published nationally and Europe-wide up until today. The aim of the present paper is an evaluation of the scientific literature and databases to check incidence and prevalence of symp
