Effects of Stannous Fluoride Toothpaste and Chios Mastiha Toothpaste on the Prevention of Enamel Erosion.

PURPOSE: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is an increasingly prevalent condition characterised by the loss of dental hard tissue due to repeated effects and interactions of acids and mechanical forces. The aim of this study was to investigate the primary preventive effect of salivary pellicle combined with either stannous fluoride (SnF2) toothpaste or mastic toothpaste against ETW in permanent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a three-arm invitro model, 54 enamel samples (18 in each group) were prepared with a salivary pellicle alone (control), salivary pellicle with SnF2 toothpaste, or salivary pe

Wnt5a gain- and loss-of-function present distinctly in craniofacial bone.

INTRODUCTION: Robinow syndrome has characteristic craniofacial and dental features and can be caused by gain- or loss-of-function variants in Wnt family member 5A (WNT5A) non-canonical signaling. The craniofacial and dental manifestation of Robinow syndrome is heterogenous, as is the effect of altered Wnt5a in animal models. The relationship between Wnt5a and craniofacial and dental phenotypes is not fully understood. METHODS: To investigate the role of Wnt5a in craniofacial and dental development, we utilized a Wnt5a conditional loss-of-function (LOF: Wnt5a fl/fl ;Ctsk cre ) and a Wnt5a cond

DEEP LEARNING-DRIVEN SEGMENTATION OF DENTAL IMPLANTS AND PERI-IMPLANTITIS DETECTION IN ORTHOPANTOMOGRAPHS: A NOVEL DIAGNOSTIC TOOL.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Dental implants are well-established for restoring partial or complete tooth loss, with osseointegration being essential for their long-term success. Peri-implantitis, marked by inflammation and bone loss, compromises implant longevity. Current diagnostic methods for peri-implantitis face challenges such as subjective interpretation and time consumption. Our deep learning-based approach aims to address these limitations by providing a more accurate and efficient solution. This study aims to develop a deep learning-based approach for segmenting dental implants and de…

3D-printed custom ankle braces for people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a neurodegenerative condition resulting in footdrop, ankle instability and impaired balance and gait. This study aimed to determine (1) whether 3D-printed custom ankle braces improve function and balance in people with CMT and (2) whether this is an acceptable device for use in this population. METHODS: A within-subject comparison pragmatic/pilot study was undertaken. Ten people with CMT (mean [SD] age 48 [14] years, 60% male) were fitted with 3D-printed ankle braces. Following a 4-week wear-in period, walking and balance tests and patient-re

Two new mouse models of Gjb1-associated Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1X.

BACKGROUND: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1X is caused by mutations in GJB1, which is the second most common gene associated with inherited peripheral neuropathy. The GJB1 gene encodes connexin 32 (CX32), a gap junction protein expressed in myelinating glial cells. The gene is X-linked, and the mutations cause a loss of function. AIMS: A large number of disease-associated variants have been identified, and many result in mistrafficking and mislocalization of the protein. An existing knockout mouse lacking Gjb1 expression provides a valid animal model of CMT1X, but the complete lack of prot

Evaluation of Antioxidant and Antibacterial Effects of Lyophilized Cell-Free Probiotic Supernatants of Three Lactobacillus spp. and Their Cytocompatibility Against Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic disease characterized by the inflammation of the periodontium and leads to progressive damage, such as gingival atrophy, alveolar bone loss, and tooth loss. Streptococcus mutans and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans are bacteria that support the occurrence of periodontitis via the ability to form biofilms or damage the alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments. On the other hand, periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) are cells with differentiation capability into osteoblasts or osteoblasts. Due to their role in periodontal homeostasis and regeneratio…

Oral Health in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study.

Tobacco use is a well-established risk factor for multiple adverse oral conditions. Few nationally representative oral health data sets encompass the current diversity of tobacco and nicotine products. This investigation examines the validity of oral health measures in the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to assess relationships between tobacco use and oral health. Cross-sectional data from PATH Study wave 4 (N = 33,643 US adults, collected 2016-2018) were used to obtain estimates for 6 self-reported oral conditions (e.g., bone loss around teeth, tooth extractions) and

Does alveolar ridge preservation reduce the need for sinus floor elevation: A comparative study to spontaneous healing.

INTRODUCTION: In cases of atrophy in the maxillary posterior region, characterized by reduced vertical bone volume, implant placement becomes challenging. Augmentation procedures like sinus lifts are often needed to address insufficient bone volume. This study aims to explore if alveolar ridge preservation, using a bovine bone substitute and a porcine collagen membrane, significantly decreases the need for sinus lifts compared to natural wound healing after tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this comparative clinical study, 40 patients requiring a total of 53 extractions were assigne
