A novel ultrasonic technique for differentiating cysts from solid lesions: preliminary results in the breast.

The feasibility of a new ultrasonic technique to distinguish cysts from solid lesions is explored. High intensity pulses are used to induce acoustic streaming in cyst fluid, and this motion is detected using Doppler techniques. Acoustic streaming cannot be generated in solid lesions, therefore, its detection would indicate a cyst. In six of seven breast cysts motion was clearly generated and detected in vivo. Ultrasonic pulses with intensities up to 4.4 W cm-2 (I(spta) in water) were focused on the cysts for 10 s. Lesion diameters ranged from 0.6 to 2.5 cm; induced flow velocities were less th

[Evoked otoacoustic emissions in normal and hearing impaired adults and children].

In adults and children, 203 normal ears, 124 cars with hearing-impairment and 37 ears with middle ear problems were studied concerning click-evoked oto-acoustic emissions. According to the results, this method by high specifity and sensitivity renders possible the recognition of low sensory hearing losses. Complete middle ear effusions too make themselves conspicuous by preventing the reception of these responses. The recording of click-evoked oto-acoustic emissions is a most promising auditory screening-method. A general use could essentially improve the early detection of hearing losses in i

Stapedius reflex growth function in cochlear implant patients.

The growth function of the contralateral stapedius reflex elicited by analog electrostimulation via cochlear implant was investigated in 9 patients and compared to reflex functions obtained for acoustic stimulation in 3 normal-hearing subjects. Sinusoidal signal bursts with the same time pattern were used for the two stimulation modes, the contraction of the middle ear muscle was monitored by sampling the compliance change in the contralateral ear. The reflex amplitudes were found to increase with increasing stimulus intensity in all individuals except in 1 with electrical stimulation. The slo

Early auditory evoked potentials (EAEPs) in the rabbit. Normative data and effects of lesions in the cerebello-pontine angle.

Early auditory evoked potentials (EAEPs) were measured in rabbits. After establishing normative data an operative method was developed to expose the cerebello-pontine angle. Compression of the VIIIth nerve and a reduction of blood supply to the cochlea via the labyrinthine artery altered the EAEP systematically. In all cases of an VIIIth nerve lesion wave 1 continued to be elicited whereas waves 2-5 disappeared. Circulatory disturbances had an effect upon wave 1. The results indicate that the generator of wave 1 is the unit cochlea/acoustic nerve and of waves 2-5 the auditory pathway within th

Normal function of the middle ear and its measurement.

Some principles underlying acoustic impedance measurements in the ear canal and their evaluation are reviewed. The following topics are included: some methods of measurement, useful frequency range, the middle-ear system, impedance characteristics of normal and some pathological ears, and the relation between the impedance and tympanometric results. Advantages and disadvantages of measurements with an acoustic bridge and parallel probe tubes are contrasted and the same is done for tympanometry versus static impedance measurements. The relation between tympanograms and static impedance data ref

Articulatory adaptations to the effect of nasality on vowel formants in Xinfeng Tieshikou Hakka.

Articulatory compensation for mismatches between expected and perceived formants appears to be a fundamental component of speech production. We pursue the hypothesis that this component of speech production accounts for observed differences in articulation between oral and nasal vowel pairs in natural language production. The empirical focus is Xinfeng Tieshikou Hakka (XTH). We report acoustic analyses of three oral-nasal vowel pairs, [i]-[ĩ], [e]-[ẽ], [a]-[ã], from eight speakers as well as electromagnetic articulography of two oral-nasal vowel pairs, [e]-[ẽ], [a]-[ã], from one of these speak

In Situ One-Step Fabrication of Interpenetrating Structures in Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers via a Novel Mechanism Coupling Confined Evaporation and Dynamic Chemistry.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) face three critical fabrication challenges: first, the fabrication of complex structures relies on external devices, prone to spatial interference that restricts the design space of topological structures; second, the orientation of liquid crystal (LC) mesogens is dependent on external fields, with precision limited by existing instrumentation; third, the asynchrony between structure formation and orientation induction restricts complex structure fabrication. Herein, we propose an in situ one-step fabrication strategy and successfully fabricate interpenetrating

Self-supervised speech quality assessment (S3QA): Leveraging speech foundation models for a scalable speech quality metric.

Methods for automatically assessing speech quality in real world environments are critical for robust human language technologies and assistive devices. Behavioral ratings (e.g., mean opinion scores) are considered the gold standard, but are susceptible to inter-rater variability, cannot be generalized, and are labor-intensive, thus limiting the acoustic challenges they can quantify. We present a scalable method for assessing speech quality: the self-supervised speech quality assessment model. First, we manipulated high-quality utterances, using acoustic challenges that emulate real-world degr

Using sound to detect Formica rufa behavioural changes to a common pesticide.

Soil-dwelling insects may be at particularly high risk of exposure to pesticides because soils are a major recipient of these chemicals. Still, we lack non-invasive techniques to detect in situ responses of soil macrofauna to pesticides and other contaminants. Here, we test if sound recordings can reveal sub-lethal behavioural shifts in ant colonies caused by a neonicotinoid (imidacloprid). We demonstrate that an acoustic variable can detect pesticide-induced shifts in outdoor behaviours (increased activity) of red wood ants (Formica rufa). This behaviour shift was observed at environmentally

Effect of exogenous manipulation of glucocorticoid concentrations on meerkat heart rate, behaviour and vocal production.

Encoding of emotional arousal in vocalisations is commonly observed in the animal kingdom, and provides a rapid means of information transfer about an individual's affective responses to internal and external stimuli. As a result, assessing affective arousal-related variation in the acoustic structure of vocalisations can provide insight into how animals perceive both internal and external stimuli, and how this is, in turn, communicated to con- or heterospecifics. However, the underlying physiological mechanisms driving arousal-related acoustic variation remains unclear. One potential driver o

Schooling Fish from a New, Multimodal Sensory Perspective.

The acoustic hypothesis suggests that schooling can result in several benefits. (1) The acoustic pattern (AP) (pressure waves and other water movements) produced by swimming are likely to serve as signals within fish shoals, communicating useful spatial and temporal information between school members, enabling synchronized locomotion and influencing join, stay or leave decisions and shoal assortment. (2) Schooling is likely to reduce the masking of environmental signals, e.g., by auditory grouping, and fish may achieve windows of silence by simultaneously stopping their movements. (3) A solita

Tiger beetles produce anti-bat ultrasound and are probable Batesian moth mimics.

Echolocating bats and their eared insect prey are in an acoustic evolutionary war. Moths produce anti-bat sounds that startle bat predators, signal noxiousness, mimic unpalatable models and jam bat sonar. Tiger beetles (Cicindelidae) also purportedly produce ultrasound in response to bat attacks. Here we tested 19 tiger beetle species from seven genera and showed that they produce anti-bat signals to playback of authentic bat echolocation. The dominant frequency of beetle sounds substantially overlaps the sonar calls of sympatric bats. As tiger beetles are known to produce defensive chemicals

Effects of entropy in real-world noise on speech perception in listeners with normal hearing and hearing lossa).

Hearing aids show more benefit in traditional laboratory speech-in-noise tests than in real-world noisy environments. Real-world noise comprises a large range of acoustic properties that vary randomly and rapidly between and within environments, making quantifying real-world noise and using it in experiments and clinical tests challenging. One approach is to use acoustic features and statistics to quantify acoustic properties of real-world noise and control for them or measure their relationship to listening performance. In this study, the complexity of real-world noise from different environm

Measurement of Pipe and Liquid Parameters Using the Beam Steering Capabilities of Array-Based Clamp-On Ultrasonic Flow Meters.

Clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters (UFMs) are installed on the outside of the pipe wall. Typically, they consist of two single-element transducers mounted on angled wedges, which are acoustically coupled to the pipe wall. Before flow metering, the transducers are placed at the correct axial position by manually moving one transducer along the pipe wall until the maximum amplitude of the relevant acoustic pulse is obtained. This process is time-consuming and operator-dependent. Next to this, at least five parameters of the pipe and the liquid need to be provided manually to compute the flow speed.

Changes in intra-nuclear mechanics in response to DNA damaging agents revealed by time-domain Brillouin micro-spectroscopy.

How DNA damage and repair processes affect the biomechanical properties of the nucleus interior remains unknown. Here, an opto-acoustic microscope based on time-domain Brillouin spectroscopy (TDBS) was used to investigate the induced regulation of intra-nuclear mechanics. With this ultrafast pump-probe technique, coherent acoustic phonons were tracked along their propagation in the intra-nucleus nanostructure and the complex stiffness moduli and thicknesses were measured with an optical resolution. Osteosarcoma cells were exposed to methyl methanesulfonate (MMS) and the presence of DNA damage

Tone and vowel disruptions in Mandarin aphasia and apraxia of speech.

In this study, we investigated the lexical tones and vowels produced by ten speakers diagnosed with aphasia and coexisting apraxia of speech (A-AOS) and ten healthy participants, to compare their tone and vowel disruptions. We first judged the productions of both A-AOS and healthy participants and classified them into three categories, i.e. those by healthy speakers and rated as correct, those by A-AOS participants and rated as correct, and those by A-AOS participants and rated as incorrect. We then compared the perceptual results for the three groups based on their respective acoustic correla

A broad filter between call frequency and peripheral auditory sensitivity in northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster).

Acoustic communication is a fundamental component of mate and competitor recognition in a variety of taxa and requires animals to detect and differentiate among acoustic stimuli (Bradbury and Vehrencamp in Principles of animal communication, 2nd edn., Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, 2011). The matched filter hypothesis predicts a correspondence between peripheral auditory tuning of receivers and properties of species-specific acoustic signals, but few studies have assessed this relationship in rodents. We recorded vocalizations and measured auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in northern grass

Cycle-to-cycle flow variations in a square duct with a symmetrically oscillating constriction.

Spatially and temporally resolved Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) measurements are presented of flow complexities in a nominally two-dimensional, symmetric, duct with an oscillating constriction. The motivation for this research lies in advancing the state-of-the-art in applying integral control volume analysis to modeling unsteady internal flows. The specific target is acoustic modeling of human phonation. The integral mass and momentum equations are directly coupled to the acoustic equations and provide quantitative insight into acoustic source strengths in addition to the dynamics

Correlating Undiagnosed Hearing Impairment with Hyperfunctional Dysphonia.

PURPOSE: This study initially investigated the co-occurrence of hearing impairment that had not been previously diagnosed in a group of patients with hyperfunctional dysphonia. Subsequently, it explored whether any correlations exist between quantitative dysphonia severity assessment parameters and distinctive acoustic features of hearing impairment. METHOD: The age-stratified participants were 36 patients presenting with hyperfunctional dysphonia to the voice clinic. For each subject, the following measurements were collected: grade of dysphonia severity rating by the clinician, a Voice Hand
