In order to identify predictors of having sex while symptomatic among patients with sexually transmitted infections (STIs), a cross-sectional study was done at Mulago STD clinic in Kampala, Uganda. Ninety eight patients with STIs who engaged in sex while symptomatic were compared with 40 patients who did not engage in sex while symptomatic on: social-demographic; STI symptoms, health seeking behavior; condom use, sexual behaviour; partner referral; and knowledge and attitudes about STIs. On univariate analysis the risk of having sex while symptomatic was increased by: being female (crude odds

BACKGROUND: The spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in Cambodia is mainly caused by sexual transmission and the high-risk group in this country are female commercial sex workers (CSW). There are two types of CSW, direct CSW (DCSW) and indirect CSW (IDCSW), who are different from each other in sexual activities. This study was conducted in order to describe the risk factors on HIV for each type of CSW, and to establish effective preventive strategies against the HIV epidemic among CSW.
METHODS: The participants, 143 DCSW and 94 IDCSW, were interviewed using a questionnaire to determin

Data from a cohort of young HIV-negative gay and bisexual men were analyzed to identify determinants of sexual risk-taking at baseline. Gay/bisexual men aged between 18 and 30 completed a self-administered questionnaire including demographics, depression, social support, substance use, and consensual versus nonconsensual sex. Risk-takers were defined as those who had unprotected anal sex with casual male sex partners in the previous year; non-risk-takers were defined as those who reported consistent condom use during anal sex with all male partners in the previous year. Logistic regression was

OBJECTIVES: We studied the effect of small monetary incentives and non-monetary incentives of similar value on enrollment and participation in clinic based HIV/STD prevention counselling. We examined incident STDs to try to assess whether participants offered money may be less motivated to change risky behaviours than those offered other incentives.
METHODS: Patients from five US STD clinics were invited to enroll in a multisession risk reduction counselling intervention and, based on their enrollment date, were offered either $15 for each additional session or non-monetary incentives worth $

High rates of unprotected sexual behaviors and the exchange of sex for crack have been reported among female crack cocaine users. This subpopulation of drug users is at significant risk for contracting and transmitting HIV and AIDS. To date, there has been no research comparing crack- and opioid-abusing women, particularly regarding their involvement in high-risk behaviors and other key background indicators for different subgroups of drug-abusing women. Sixty-one crack-abusing African-American women who recently entered an intensive outpatient treatment program were compared to 64 matched wom

The aim of the investigation was to establish the prevalence of psychosocial problems in men with haemophilia and HIV infection, and to identify factors associated with psychological morbidity. A cross-sectional controlled study including 37 HIV seropositive and 36 HIV seronegative men with haemophilia under the care of the Oxford Haemophilia Centre were included in the investigation. The outcome measures included current psychological status (PSE, POMS, Beck Hopelessness Scale and Self-Esteem) and psychiatric history; coping and health beliefs (Self-Control Schedule, Hardiness Scale, Health L

In the first half of this century several studies demonstrated that temporary infertility may be induced by immunizing women with semen. Isolated examples of acute hypersensitivity reactions to sexual intercourse provide dramatic evidence that natural isoimmunization to semen occurs in man. The afferent immunological pathway in this process can be influenced by adjuvant effects of genital tract infection. This may be important in assessing the significance of antisperm antibodies in infertile women. In immunological studies of female infertility, the 3 most commonly used tests for humoral anti

BACKGROUND: Alternative (or continuation) high schools are institutions designed for students at risk for not graduating due to behavioral, educational, or medical problems. The present study explored the relationship between negative substance use consequences (eg, having trouble at school or work) and noncondom use in this at-risk population and whether these associations varied by sex.
METHODS: Participants (N = 1101; 62.9% Hispanic; Mage = 16.85) were sampled from 24 alternative high schools in California, and data were analyzed using cross-sectional multivariate logistic regression model

Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of HIV infected individuals in the world. Developing and implementing effective biomedical interventions still remains urgent. Poor adherence has been commonly identified as one of the major barriers for the success of HIV prevention trials. A better understanding of how to improve adherence remains a research priority. In this analysis, younger age (<35 years), number of children ≤2, being single/not cohabiting and having a new partner during the study follow up were all significantly associated with poor adherence and subsequent HIV seroconversions.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) regarding HIV/AIDS is one of the corner stones in the fight against the disease. Youths are most vulnerable to infection because they engage in risky practices due to a lack of adequate information. Thus, evaluating their KAPs will help in designing appropriate prevention strategies. This study was aimed at assessing the KAPs of senior secondary school students in Fako Division, Cameroon, on HIV/AIDS.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study carried out on 464 students aged 13-25 years, selected by systematic quota random sampling from so

Research on network-level influences on HIV risk behaviors among young men in sub-Saharan Africa is severely lacking. One significant gap in the literature that may provide direction for future research with this population is understanding the degree to which various HIV risk behaviors and normative beliefs cluster within men's social networks. Such research may help us understand which HIV-related norms and behaviors have the greatest potential to be changed through social influence. Additionally, few network-based studies have described the structure of social networks of young men in sub-S

A dearth of research to date has explored HIV risk among Black men who report sex with transgender partners. In 2008, 197 Black men residing in Massachusetts were recruited via modified respondent-driven sampling and completed an interviewer-administered survey. Overall, 8% reported sex with a transgender partner in the past 12 months. Over half (56%) reported unprotected sex during their last encounter with transgender partners. Factors significantly associated with having a transgender sex partner: history of substance abuse, incarceration, PTSD symptoms, lower levels of perceived social sup

INTRODUCTION: Recent nationally representative studies documenting event-level sexual behavior have included samples that are predominantly heterosexual, resulting in limited information on the sexual repertoire of gay and bisexually identified men.
AIM: This study sought to document the sexual behaviors that gay and bisexually identified men report during their most recent male-partnered sexual event and to describe the situational characteristics and participants' evaluation of these events.
METHODS: Via an internet-based survey, data were collected from 24,787 gay and bisexually identifie
