PURPOSE: In our previous studies, differences in the upper airway inner diameter between fetuses with thoracic space occupying lesions and normal fetuses were found, but their clinical value has not been further validated. We designed a prospective case-control animal experiment to validate its prognostic value in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).
METHODS: Using Nitrofen to create a fetal SD-rat model of CDH. Calculate the upper airway inner diameter and lung parameters of fetal rats on ultrasonic image and histology sections, and calculate the correlation between the upper airway and lu

Pulmonary hypoplasia is a rare but clinically significant congenital disorder characterized by impaired fetal lung development, leading to impaired growth and maturation of lung parenchyma and pulmonary vasculature. Stemming from a diverse group of underlying etiologies including congenital diaphragmatic hernia, congenital lung malformations, and prolonged oligohydramnios, the clinical presentation of pulmonary hypoplasia is highly variable. Although many factors affect severity of disease, pulmonary hypoplasia can be life-threatening and accounts for a disproportionately high proportion of ne

The evolving field of fetal neurology can offer insights into early nervous system development through antenatal dynamic ultrasonography and maternal perception of movements. The spectrum of abnormal fetal movements ranges from fetal akinesia, often associated with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), to increased repetitive movements, typically indicating fetal seizures. Nonepileptic hyperkinetic movement disorders of the fetus are rarely documented. Here, we report a female infant who had clonus-like movements in utero and postnatally. Antenatal ultrasonography revealed polyhydramnios,

Anxiety during pregnancy is a clinical and public health concern that has been linked to adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes and, via developmental programming, altered fetal biology and behavior with lasting effects on health and development. Two anxiety phenotypes, pregnancy-related anxiety (PrA) and general prenatal anxiety (GenA), have been identified as showing distinct phenotypic patterns and differential associations with child health outcomes. This study tests the novel corollary hypothesis that these phenotypes can be differentiated according to maternal-fetal-placental biological

Fetal infection with human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) can cause sensorineural hearing loss and vestibular impairment, yet its pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aims to identify potential target cell types of hCMV in the human fetal inner ear. Viral particles use several envelope glycoproteins to enter target cells, including the pentameric complex, the trimeric complex and glycoprotein B. Platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA) serves as the receptor in fibroblasts, neuropilin-2 (NRP2) in epithelial, endothelial and dendritic cells as well as in leukocytes. This review aimed to summarize the major progress in maternal-fetal medicine achieved by Chinese scientists in recent years. PubMed was systematically searched from January 2020 to November 2023. Publications that reported the progress in embryo implantation, placentation, and parturition made by Chinese scientists in the last 3 years were selected. The milestone events during gestation, embryo implantation, endometrial decidualization, placentation, and parturition are pivotal to a successful pregnancy. Embryo implantation requires intricate interactions between implantation-competent blastoc

BACKGROUND: Our previous study demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of abdominal radical trachelectomy during pregnancy but did not focus on the fetus. This study aimed to clarify the influence of abdominal radical trachelectomy performed during pregnancy on the fetus.
METHODS: Eight cervical cancer patients who underwent abdominal radical trachelectomy at our hospital between February 2013 and August 2020 were enrolled in this study. To assess the peri- and postoperative influence on the fetus, we performed fetal heart monitoring at 30-min intervals during abdominal radical trachelectom

The human placenta is essential for the supply of the fetus. To monitor the fetal development, imaging data is acquired using (US). Although it is currently the gold-standard in fetal imaging, it might not capture certain abnormalities of the placenta. (MRI) is a safe alternative for the in utero examination while acquiring the fetus data in higher detail. Nevertheless, there is currently no established procedure for assessing the condition of the placenta and consequently the fetal health. Due to maternal respiration and inherent movements of the fetus during examination, a quantitative asses…

INTRODUCTION: Important role is attributed to genetic polymorphisms influencing enzymatic activity in folate metabolism. These inherited genetic variants may influence fetal growth and fetal hypotrophy development. The aim of the study was to investigate the connection of 401A>G polymorphism of methyleneterahydrofolate dehydrogenase gene (MTHFD1) with increased risk of fetal hypotrophy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: To the study group 120 women who delivered children with fetal hypotrophy and to the control group 120 healthy women were enrolled. Study group was divided into subgroups according to ges

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder. Children and pregnant women are at highest risk for developing iron deficiency because of their increased iron requirements. Iron-deficiency anemia during pregnancy is associated with adverse effects on fetal development, including low birth weight, growth retardation, hypertension, intrauterine fetal death, neurologic impairment, and premature birth. We hypothesized that pregnant mice fed an iron-deficient diet would have a similar outcome regarding fetal growth to that of humans. To this end, we randomly assigned female C57BL/6 mice to…

INTRODUCTION: Anterior fetal neck masses are rarely encountered. Careful routine ultrasound screening can reveal intrauterine fetal goiters (FGs). The incidence of goitrous hypothyroidism is 1 in 30,000-50,000 live births. The consequences of both FG and impaired thyroid function are serious.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To emphasize role of ultrasound in both invasive and non-invasive management of FG.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two pregnant patients, during second trimester, underwent routine antenatal ultrasound revealing FG, were investigated and managed.
RESULTS: Case 1: Revealed FG with fetal hyp

A novel hypothesis of carcinogenesis, the "fetal cell carcinogenesis" hypothesis, was established based on molecular evidence of thyroid carcinoma. In this hypothesis, cancer cells are derived directly from the remnants of fetal cells, instead of well-differentiated somatic cells by de-differentiation. For example, thyroid cancer cells are generated from three types of fetal thyroid cell, namely, thyroid stem cells (TSCs), thyroblasts, and prothyrocytes by proliferation without differentiation, which results in producing anaplastic, papillary, and follicular carcinoma, respectively. Genomic al

To assess the role of fetal blood sampling and intrauterine transfusion in monochorionic (MC) multiple pregnancy complicated by single intrauterine death (IUD), we reviewed ten cases over a 4-year period in a tertiary referral centre which underwent fetal blood sampling within 24 h of death of its MC co-twin. Intrauterine rescue transfusion was performed in all seven anaemic fetuses (hematocrit; Hct < 30%) to raise the fetal Hct to > or = 40%. The rationale was to prevent death and/or brain injury. Two fetuses, which were severely acidaemic at blood sampling, died in utero within 24 h of the p

BACKGROUND: Embryo-fetal diseases are the consequence of prenatal (progenetic and metagenetic or environmental) and intranatal (of a traumatic, infective, toxic nature) pathological factors. In multiple pregnancies this complex etiopathogenesis also includes an altered didymous embriogenesis. This study aimed to evaluate the pathologies affecting the fetus in multiple pregnancy, a special biological situation leading to the potential onset of severe fetal and neonatal damage.
METHODS: The authors studied 205 patients with multiple pregnancies, including 199 bigeminal, 5 trigeminal and 1 quadr

Isolated left-sided echogenic foci in the fetal heart are considered as a benign condition, probably representing a normal variant of the development of papillary muscles. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the incidence and significance of multiple or diffuse echogenic foci in the fetal heart. We analysed retrospectively 25 725 ultrasound examinations conducted for fetal malformations between 12 and 24 weeks' gestation. In the study group, echogenic intracardiac foci were observed in 44 cases (0.17 per cent). In 35 fetuses, these foci were confined to the region of the papilla

Fetal alcohol syndrome is the leading known cause of mental retardation. The syndrome, defined as growth retardation, midface hypoplasia, and neurologic dysfunction, represents only part of the spectrum of fetal alcohol effects. The biochemical mechanism of teratogenesis is unknown. In adults, metabolites of ethanol, FAEE, are known to accumulate in major organs. The formation of FAEE is catalyzed by a family of enzymes, FAEE synthases. Our hypothesis is that accumulation of FAEE in the embryo results in fetal alcohol syndrome. We have developed assays for FAEE and FAEE synthase activity using

Benomyl, a benzimidazole fungicide, produced craniocerebral and systemic malformations in fetal rats when administered by gavage in doses of 31.2, 62.5, and 125 mg/kg of maternal body weight on days 7-21 of gestation. Malformations increased in incidence and severity with increasing benomyl dosage and nearly doubled when coupled with a protein-deficient diet. Protein deficiency alone produced only decreased fetal weight. High benomyl doses produced higher percentages of fetal resorptions and late fetal deaths, and these percentages also increased with protein deficiency. A benomyl dose of 62.5

From this review, it is evident that multiple maternal/fetal endogenous or completely exogenous factors have been associated with the complex process regulating fetal lung development. Recent in vitro experiments with human fetal lung explants are especially noteworthy and may establish a perspective for future research. Snyder et al (108) and Medelson et al (74) have found that lung explants from 16-22-week abortuses show differentiated type II cells and augmented PC synthesis within 4 days of culture, rather than the minimum 10- to 15-week period expected in utero. Such a phenomenon is remin
