The impact of sociocultural contexts on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of adults living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia towards metabolic syndrome risks: A descriptive phenomenology study using the PEN-3 model.

INTRODUCTION: The global HIV/AIDS initiative in Africa aims for eradication by 2030 and treatment for 95% of HIV-positive adults by 2025. Adult People living with HIV (PLWHs) face health complications, including metabolic syndrome (MS), which heightens the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and cardiovascular problems. WHO and UNAIDS advocate for the integration of NCDs into primary healthcare, yet addressing MS remains a significant challenge in Africa. The WHO's Global Action Plan aims to reduce chronic diseases by managing risk factors and promoting healthy lifestyles within this popu

The effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy compared with maintenance antidepressant treatment in the prevention of depressive relapse/recurrence: results of a randomised controlled trial (the PREVENT study).

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a history of recurrent depression have a high risk of repeated depressive relapse/recurrence. Maintenance antidepressant medication (m-ADM) for at least 2 years is the current recommended treatment, but many individuals are interested in alternatives to m-ADM. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) has been shown to reduce the risk of relapse/recurrence compared with usual care but has not yet been compared with m-ADM in a definitive trial. OBJECTIVES: To establish whether MBCT with support to taper and/or discontinue antidepressant medication (MBCT-TS) is sup

Sustaining educational and psychological support during protracted war: a regional laboratory model from Ukraine.

Protracted wars create challenges that extend beyond immediate educational disruption and humanitarian response. As crisis conditions become embedded within everyday life, educational communities must continuously adapt to emerging psychological, social, and educational needs affecting children, families, teachers, and schools. While existing research in Education in Emergencies (EiE) and school-based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) has substantially expanded the understanding of child wellbeing and intervention strategies during crises, considerably less attention has been devo

A Virtual Community for Disability Advocacy: Development of a Searchable Artificial Intelligence-Supported Platform.

BACKGROUND: The lack of availability of disability data has been identified as a major challenge hindering continuous disability equity monitoring. It is important to develop a platform that enables searching for disability data to expose systemic discrimination and social exclusion, which increase vulnerability to inequitable social conditions. OBJECTIVE: Our project aims to create an accessible and multilingual pilot disability website that structures and integrates data about people with disabilities and provides data for national and international disability advocacy communities. The plat

Listening to the community: Using formative research to strengthen maternity waiting homes in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: The WHO recommends maternity waiting homes (MWH) as one intervention to improve maternal and newborn health. However, persistent structural, cultural and financial barriers in their design and implementation have resulted in mixed success in both their uptake and utilization. Guidance is needed on how to design a MWH intervention that is acceptable and sustainable. Using formative research and guided by a sustainability framework for health programs, we systematically collected data from key stakeholders and potential users in order to design a MWH intervention in Zambia that could

Use of supportive care services and advance care planning among early phase oncology clinical trial participants.

BACKGROUND: Early phase clinical trials (EP-CTs) investigate novel therapeutic approaches for patients with cancer, but little is known about patterns of supportive care service utilization and advance care planning (ACP) in this population. We sought to characterize these features in an EP-CT population and evaluate associations among receipt of supportive care services and ACP documentation. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic health record (EHR) of consecutive patients enrolled in EP-CTs at Massachusetts General Hospital from 01/01/17-12/30/19. We abstracted sociodemographi

FBXO43 variants in patients with female infertility characterized by early embryonic arrest.

STUDY QUESTION: Can any new genetic factors responsible for early embryonic arrest in infertile patients be identified, together with the mechanism of pathogenic variants? SUMMARY ANSWER: We identified three homozygous variants in the F-box protein 43 gene (FBXO43) in infertile patients and studies on the effects of the variants in HEK293T cells and mouse oocytes provided evidence for a causal relation between FBXO43 and female infertility. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: FBXO43, an inhibitor of the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome, mediates Metaphase II arrest as a component of the cytostatic fa

Exploring the Impact of a Sleep App on Sleep Quality in a General Population Sample: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: A third of adults in Western countries have impaired sleep quality. A possible solution involves distributing sleep aids through smartphone apps, but most empirical studies are limited to small pilot trials in distinct populations (eg, soldiers) or individuals with clinical sleep disorders; therefore, general population data are required. Furthermore, recent research shows that sleep app users desire a personalized approach, offering an individually tailored choice of techniques. One such aid is Peak Sleep, a smartphone app based on scientifically validated principles for improving
