Two-year outcome of treatment with central stimulant medication in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Given that adults with ADHD continue to use stimulants for extended periods of time, studies on the long-term effectiveness and adverse events are warranted. The aims of this study were to investigate factors associated with persistence in treatment in an exploratory manner and to document side effects and reasons for discontinuation. METHOD: The current study describes the systematic follow-up of 133 psychiatric patients with DSM-IV-diagnosed ADHD treated with central stimulants at a specialized outpatient unit between January 1, 2001, and August 31, 2006. A standardized question

Genetic and environmental influences on disordered gambling in men and women.

CONTEXT: Women now represent nearly half of all individuals in treatment for pathological gambling (PG), but relatively little is known about the causes of PG among women or potential sex differences in the causes of PG. OBJECTIVES: To (1) investigate the role of genetic and environmental risk factors in the development of disordered gambling (DG) among women and (2) determine the extent to which the genetic and environmental risk of DG among women differs quantitatively or qualitatively from the risk of DG among men. (Disordered gambling refers to the full continuum of gambling-related probl

The influence of substance dependence and mood disorders on outcome from pathological gambling: five-year follow-up.

A prospective study of the role of comorbid substance abuse and dependence and mood disorders in the outcome from pathological gambling. A naturalistic sample of pathological gamblers who had recently quit gambling (N = 101) was followed and data were available for 83% of participants at 3 months, 80% at 12 months, and 52% at 5 years. Those participants with a drug diagnosis during their lifetime were less likely to have a minimum 3 month period of abstinence, and those who had been involved in gambling treatment were more likely to have a minimum 12 months of continuous abstinence. Lifetime g

Bone lead levels in adjudicated delinquents. A case control study.

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure shares many risk factors with delinquent behavior, and bone lead levels are related to self-reports of delinquent acts. No data exist as to whether lead exposure is higher in arrested delinquents. The goal of this study is to evaluate the association between lead exposure, as reflected in bone lead levels, and adjudicated delinquency. METHODS: This is a case-control study of 194 youths aged 12-18, arrested and adjudicated as delinquent by the Juvenile Court of Allegheny County, PA and 146 nondelinquent controls from high schools in the city of Pittsburgh. Bone lead w

MR-ARFI and Beyond: Characterizing the Temporal Dynamics of Acoustic Radiation Force in Human Brain.

PURPOSE: Magnetic Resonance Acoustic Radiation Force Imaging (MR-ARFI) encodes focused ultrasound (FUS)-induced tissue displacements to MR phase shifts. Because these phase shifts are small, optimizing displacement sensitivity and minimizing motion artifacts requires characterization of the temporal dynamics of acoustic radiation force (ARF). Beyond sequence design, such characterization enables MR-ARFI to serve as a probe of brain viscoelastic behavior and can inform the design of therapeutic ultrasound pulsing schemes by quantifying how rapidly tissue deforms and relaxes. METHODS: We develo

Long-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome Following Three Randomized Controlled Trials of Choline in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) represents a range of neurodevelopmental outcomes from prenatal alcohol exposure for which there are few interventions. Preclinical studies have identified choline as a potential treatment for cognitive deficits in FASD. We previously conducted three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in children under age 6 and reported on memory benefits following all three trials. Two RCTs compared a fixed 500 mg daily dose to placebo, and the third RCT tested a weight-adjusted choline dose. Here, we report on a longitudinal follow-up 5 years post-study co

Pleasure and compulsion in gaming: distinct roles of hedonic and compulsive game use in gaming involvement.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stage-related models of problematic gaming suggest that the relative prominence of reward-oriented and compulsivity-related processes may vary across levels of gaming involvement. However, few studies have jointly examined hedonic and compulsive game use across different levels of gaming involvement while accounting for relevant trait-level vulnerabilities. This study investigated their distinct associations with gaming involvement. METHODS: A total of 2259 gamers were included in the cross-sectional analyses, of whom 725 completed a one-year follow-up. Hedonic and compul

The Association of Fatalistic Determinism With Problematic Smartphone Use in Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study Assessing the Mediating Roles of Self-Control and Grit.

BACKGROUND: Problematic smartphone use (PSU) poses a significant risk to nurses' well-being and may have potential implications for patient safety. Although fatalistic determinism may contribute to addictive behaviors, its relation to PSU and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined the association between fatalistic determinism and PSU among nurses and the potential mediating roles of self-control and grit. METHODS: This quantitative, cross-sectional study collected data from nurses in several hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, between July and August 20

Prenatal stress, excitatory-inhibitory imbalance, and ADHD risk: a hypothesis-driven perspective on psilocybin-induced neuroplasticity.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition in which prenatal stress and long-lasting disruptions of excitatory-inhibitory (E/I) balance have been implicated as key vulnerability factors. Although established pharmacological and behavioral treatments are effective for many individuals, they are not universally successful and do not directly target upstream neurodevelopmental mechanisms. In this hypothesis-driven perspective, we examine whether psilocybin-induced neuroplasticity could theoretically modulate stress-related neurodevelopmental risk p

Altered intertemporal decision-making in individuals with high autistic traits.

BACKGROUND: Intertemporal decision-making integrates reward valuation, executive control, and temporal processing. Although individuals with high autistic traits (HAT) often display altered decision-making, the cognitive characteristics associated with altered intertemporal choice remain unclear. METHODS: Eighty-one participants completed an intertemporal choice task assessing preferences for sooner-smaller versus later-larger rewards. Delay discounting rates and delayed choice proportions were adopted as behavioral indicators of temporal reward preference. Measures of inhibitory control, wor

Consequences of repetitive head trauma: a historical reappraisal of Hobey Baker.

BACKGROUND: Hobart "Hobey" Baker (1892-1918) is one of the most celebrated amateur athletes in American history. The cause of his death in a plane crash at the end of WWI has been the subject of a longstanding debate. Contemporary scientific literature links repetitive head impacts (RHIs) with neurobehavioral dysregulation and impaired judgment. HYPOTHESIS: Hobey Baker's exposure to repetitive head trauma impaired his judgment preceding and during his fatal final flight. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This historical narrative analyzed biographical accounts of Baker's life, supplemented by

Challenging Case: "Digital Addiction" in a Neurodivergent Adolescent.

Adam is a 15-year-old boy who was born prematurely, with prenatal substance exposure, and was diagnosed in early childhood with combined-type attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. He was not found to meet criteria for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Despite treatment with stimulant medications and other adjunctive medications, Adam experienced ongoing difficulties with impulse control, sleep, and aggression. Adam was introduced to digital devices at an early age, resulting in unfiltered, poorly supervised, and prolonged screen exposure.Over time, Adam's d

The role of multiscale and delayed dynamics in tuberculosis Transmission and control: a mathematical approach.

Transmission of tuberculosis (TB) among human population depends on an individual's infectiousness, which is further determined by the concentration of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in the body. Additionally, Mtb is resistant to dryness, cold, acidic, and alkaline environments and can survive in acidic and alkaline environments for 4-5 years. Mtb in the environment plays a significant role in TB transmission and should not be overlooked. To investigate the epidemiologic relationships among pathogens, hosts, and the environment, we first develop a multiscale TB model that includes multiple t

Kipiyecipakiciipe ("coming home"): a study protocol for a multi-method investigation of culturally grounded resilience against substance-use among Shawnee adults.

BACKGROUND: American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) peoples bear the highest U.S. burden of substance-use disorder (SUD) and drug-overdose mortality. Mechanistic evidence linking community-defined cultural protective factors to neurobehavioral pathways of SUD risk is virtually absent. Most AI/AN health studies are descriptive and rarely integrate neuroscience. OBJECTIVES: The Kipiyecipakiciipe ("coming home") project aims to (i) operationalize Shawnee-defined cultural engagement variables, (ii) test their associations with neurobehavioral markers of reward, decision-making, and self-regulat

Positive ADHD Scores are Associated With Higher Screen Time and Anxiety Symptoms in Medical Students: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) refers to a set of symptoms, such as an inability to sustain attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, with a prevalence of 2.0% for the general population. Approximately 2.7% of American medical students report having some form of disability, with ADHD emerging as the most frequently self-disclosed condition. Medical students with a positive ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) score present more depression symptoms in comparison with those with a negative ASRS score. Previous studies suggest that a low amount of time spent in physical act

Trichobezoar Causing Obstruction of a Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Feeding Tube: A Case Report.

Trichobezoar (hairball) is a rare condition that may pose a diagnostic challenge. Trichobezoar is prevalent in young females with psychiatric disorders. It is defined as a compact mass of ingested hair that accumulates within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, most commonly in the stomach, and can sometimes extend into the intestines. Its formation occurs because hair is indigestible and tends to mat together over time, creating a dense, often obstructive mass. When a trichobezoar extends beyond the duodenum, the condition is referred to as Rapunzel syndrome. Trichobezoars are often associated w
