Endoscopic resection of colloid cysts: indications, technique, and results during a 13-year period.

OBJECTIVE: Questions of recurrence and inadequacy of follow-up length persist regarding endoscopic treatment of colloid cysts. In this retrospective review, we report our long-term follow-up during a 13-year period in 35 patients who underwent endoscopic resection of colloid cysts. METHODS: The 19 males and 16 females (age range 14 to 58 years, mean 35.9 years) who had symptomatic colloid cysts that ranged in size from 5 mm to 4 cm underwent endoscopic resection in the period from 1991 to 2004. RESULTS: Of 2 patients who developed recurrences at 5.9 years and 4.3 years (1 and 6 mm, respectiv

Fate of hepatitis D virus-specific CD8+ T cells during bulevirtide monotherapy in patients with chronic hepatitis delta.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Bulevirtide reduces viremia in chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection, but long-term treatment is required in most patients to prevent relapse. Sustained treatment responses may be fostered by therapy-induced amelioration of HDV-specific CD8+ T-cell responses that are exhausted because of high viremia and antigen loads during chronic HDV infection. We therefore studied the effect of bulevirtide monotherapy on HDV-specific CD8+ T-cell repertoire, phenotype, and functionality. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with HDV infection and cirrhosis starting bulevirtide treatment we

40 Hz biparietal transcranial alternating current stimulation for Alzheimer's disease: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by dysfunction in multiple cognitive domains. Patients with AD demonstrate a relative attenuation and dysregulation of theta and gamma oscillations in the temporal and parietal lobes at an early stage. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been shown to modulate neural oscillations in different regions of the brain, affecting higher cognitive functions such as motor function, memory, and learning. OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy and after-effects of biparietal 40 Hz tACS in treating AD patients, to analyze its

Electroconvulsive therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) involves the induction of a seizure by the administration of an electrical stimulus via electrodes usually placed bilaterally on the scalp and was introduced as a treatment for schizophrenia in 1938. However, ECT is a controversial treatment with concerns about long-term side effects such a memory loss. Therefore, it is important to determine its clinical efficacy and safety for people with schizophrenia who are not responding to their treatment. OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to assess the effects (benefits and harms) of ECT for people with

The influence of childhood abuse and prenatal intimate partner violence on childbirth experiences and breastfeeding outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Despite the detrimental effects and life-course health consequences of violence exposure, relatively few studies have adequate capacity to investigate the evolution of violence from childhood to motherhood. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the cyclical nature of childhood abuse and prenatal inter-partner violent victimization (p-IPV) and its adverse impact on childbirth trauma and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) practice in Vietnam. METHOD: Using a prospective birth cohort, 150 pregnant women were recruited in the third trimester of pregnancy in Hue city in central Vietnam (Wa

Examining unique and prospective relationships among self-injurious thoughts and behaviors and posttraumatic stress disorder: a network analysis in two trauma-exposed samples.

BACKGROUND: As self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITB) remain a pressing public health concern, research continues to focus on risk factors, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Network analysis provides a novel approach to examining the PTSD-SITB relationship. This study utilized the network approach to elucidate how individual PTSD symptoms may drive and maintain SITB. METHODS: We estimated cross-sectional networks in two samples of trauma-exposed adults (Sample 1: N = 349 adults; Sample 2: N = 1307 Veterans) to identify PTSD symptoms that may act as bridges to SITB. Additiona

Breastfeeding in Women Having Experienced Childhood Sexual Abuse.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) can have a serious effect on general and obstetric health. Breastfeeding includes several triggers for memories of abuse experiences, which will likely influence decisions about breastfeeding and its implementation in daily life. This is important since breastfeeding improves maternal well-being and bonding with the child. Research aim: As breastfeeding strongly influences the long-term health of children, we investigated experiences with breastfeeding in women with a history of CSA. METHODS: Data on breastfeeding were collected within a research proje

Calcium-sensing receptor in the rat hippocampus: a developmental study.

The extracellular Ca2+ (Ca2+(o))-sensing receptor (CaR) plays a key role in maintaining near constancy of Ca2+(o) in mammals through its presence in parathyroid gland and kidney. The CaR is also present in brain, and although its role(s) in the brain is not known, it is possible that small changes in Ca2+(o) modify essential physiological and pathological processes, since calcium is crucial for numerous neuronal functions. Northern analysis has revealed that the CaR mRNA is present in hippocampus and several other regions of the brain. The hippocampus is an important site for learning and memo

Deficits in neuronal architecture but not over-inhibition are main determinants of reduced neuronal network activity in a mouse model of overexpression of Dyrk1A.

Abnormal dendritic arbors, dendritic spine "dysgenesis" and excitation inhibition imbalance are main traits assumed to underlie impaired cognition and behavioral adaptation in intellectual disability. However, how these modifications actually contribute to functional properties of neuronal networks, such as signal integration or storage capacity is unknown. Here, we used a mouse model overexpressing Dyrk1A (Dual-specificity tyrosine [Y]-regulated kinase), one of the most relevant Down syndrome (DS) candidate genes, to gather quantitative data regarding hippocampal neuronal deficits produced by

Fetal microchimeric cells: Today's enemies, tomorrow's friends.

Microchimerism-the long-term persistence of genetically distinct cells exchanged between mother and fetus-is a widespread feature of mammalian reproduction whose evolutionary significance remains debated. Recent empirical work shows that newly arriving fetal microchimeric cells actively displace resident microchimeric populations, challenging the view that maternal tissues progressively accumulate cellular memories of past pregnancies. Here, we develop models to investigate how such displacement may have evolved and what it reveals about the function of microchimeric cells. We show that the ma

Interfacial Engineering of Two-Dimensional Perovskite Memristors toward Reliable and Flexible Optoelectronic Memory Arrays.

Two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper halide perovskites are promising candidates for flexible optoelectronic memories owing to their tunable composition, reduced power consumption, and intrinsic structural anisotropy. Yet, achieving long-term reliability and environmental stability in perovskite-based memristors remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate highly oriented (PEA)2MA4Pb5I16 thin films integrated into optoelectronic memristors, where interface optimization with softly deposited Ag nanoparticles (NPs) enhances device performance without damaging the active layer. The resulting

Progressive Pixel-Neighborhood Deformable Cross-Attention for Multispectral Object Detection.

Effective cross-modal feature alignment and interaction are central challenges in multispectral object detection. Although global cross-attention provides strong long-range modeling ability, its quadratic complexity with respect to feature size limits deployment on resource-constrained platforms. We therefore propose Progressive Pixel-Neighborhood Deformable Cross-Attention for multispectral feature fusion, termed PNAFusion. The proposed framework is motivated by two observations: weak misalignment between visible and thermal images is usually concentrated around local neighborhoods, and seman

Lesion of the ventral or dorsal hippocampus in the rat delays puberty, follicular growth and secretion of sex steroid hormones.

INTRODUCTION: The hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis is controlled by gonadotropins and by a direct neural pathway to the gonads. New evidence suggests the existence of neural connection from the hippocampus to the hypothalamus that can regulate its function. It could be a new control on the well-regulated hormonal and neural connection to the gonads and hence in reproduction. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of independent lesion of the dorsal or ventral hippocampus in the female rat on the onset of puberty, follicular growth and serum concentration of sex steroid and gon

Neurocognitive and Psychosocial Characteristics of Pediatric Patients With Post-Acute/Long-COVID: A Retrospective Clinical Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Studies suggest a large number of patients have persistent symptoms following COVID-19 infection-a condition termed "long COVID." Although children and parents often report cognitive difficulties after COVID, very few if any studies have been published including neuropsychological testing. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was completed for the first 18 patients referred for a neuropsychological evaluation from a multidisciplinary pediatric post-COVID clinic. The neuropsychological screening battery assessed verbal fluency and category switching, attention, working memory, proc

Alpha-2 Adrenoreceptor Antagonist Yohimbine Potentiates Consolidation of Conditioned Fear.

BACKGROUND: Hyperconsolidation of aversive associations and poor extinction learning have been hypothesized to be crucial in the acquisition of pathological fear. Previous animal and human research points to the potential role of the catecholaminergic system, particularly noradrenaline and dopamine, in acquiring emotional memories. Here, we investigated in a between-participants design with 3 groups whether the noradrenergic alpha-2 adrenoreceptor antagonist yohimbine and the dopaminergic D2-receptor antagonist sulpiride modulate long-term fear conditioning and extinction in humans. From trained immunity in allergy to trained immunity-based allergen vaccines.

Innate immune cells experience long lasting metabolic and epigenetic changes after an encounter with specific stimuli. This facilitates enhanced immune responses upon secondary exposition to both the same and unrelated pathogens, a process termed trained immunity. Trained immunity-based vaccines (TIbV) are vaccines able to induce innate immune memory, thus conferring heterologous protection against a broad range of pathogens. While trained immunity has been well documented in the context of infections and multiple immune-mediated diseases, the role of innate immune memory and its contribution

On the molecular basis of the receptor mosaic hypothesis of the engram.

1. This paper revisits the so-called "receptor mosaic hypothesis" for memory trace formation in the light of recent findings in "functional (or interaction) proteomics." The receptor mosaic hypothesis maintains that receptors may form molecular aggregates at the plasma membrane level representing part of the computational molecular networks. 2. Specific interactions between receptors occur as a consequence of the pattern of transmitter release from the source neurons, which release the chemical code impinging on the receptor mosaics of the target neuron. Thus, the decoding of the chemical mess

Apolipoprotein E epsilon4 allele differently affects the patterns of neuropsychological presentation in early- and late-onset Alzheimer's disease patients.

The presence of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon4 allele is a definite risk factor for the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Its presence seems to affect especially the memory in the early stage of the disease, but the effect on the progression of the disease and survival is still controversial. Some longitudinal studies could be influenced by variables other than APOE, such as the response to medical treatment, rehabilitation therapy and inclusion of patients at different stages of progression at baseline. Moreover, the inclusion in the same study sample of patients of different ages at o
