Effects of cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation on hip range of motion of healthy sedentary women: A crossover study.

The improvements in range of motion (ROM) by cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (c-tDCS) were only found in sedentary men and not in females. Thus, the study investigated the effect of c-tDCS on hip flexion range of motion (HFROM) in sedentary women. Ten healthy (27.2 ± 6.4 years for age, 67.9 ± 17.8 kg for body mass, 159.1 ± 7.1 cm for height, and 87.1 ± 3.3° for HFROM) and right-leg-dominant women performed a counterbalanced crossover design in two experimental sessions, separated a week apart: c-tDCS and placebo stimulus (sham). Before and after experimental conditions (Pre-st…

Applications of Biomechanical Foot Models to Evaluate Dance Movements Using Three-Dimensional Motion Capture: A Review of the Literature.

Dance movement requires excessive, repetitive range of motion (ROM) at the foot-ankle complex, possibly contributing to the high rate of injury among dancers. However, we know little about foot biomechanics during dance movements. Researchers are using three-dimensional (3D) motion capture systems to study the in vivo kinematics of joint segments more frequently in dance-medicine research, warranting a literature review and quality assessment evaluation. The purpose of this literature review was to identify and evaluate studies that used 3D motion capture to analyze in vivo biomechanics of the…

Magnetically Induced Brownian Motion of Iron Oxide Nanocages in Alternating Magnetic Fields and Their Application for Efficient siRNA Delivery.

Hyperthermia of superparamagnetic nanoparticles driven by Néel relaxation in an alternating magnetic field (AMF) has been studied in biomedical areas; however, Brownian motion, induced by another magnetic relaxation mechanism, has not been explored extensively despite its potential in intracellular mechanoresponsive applications. We investigated whether superparamagnetic cage-shaped iron oxide nanoparticles (IO-nanocages), previously demonstrated to carry payloads inside their cavities for drug delivery, can generate Brownian motion by tuning the nanoparticle size at 335 kHz AMF frequency. The…

Income inequality and mobility in geometric Brownian motion with stochastic resetting: theoretical results and empirical evidence of non-ergodicity.

We explore the role of non-ergodicity in the relationship between income inequality, the extent of concentration in the income distribution, and income mobility, the feasibility of an individual to change their position in the income rankings. For this purpose, we use the properties of an established model for income growth that includes 'resetting' as a stabilizing force to ensure stationary dynamics. We find that the dynamics of inequality is regime-dependent: it may range from a strictly non-ergodic state where this phenomenon has an increasing trend, up to a stable regime where inequality

Tape suture constructs for instabilities of the pubic symphysis: is the idea of motion preservation a suitable treatment option? A cadaver study.

INTRODUCTION: Current gold standard for the treatment of symphyseal disruptions includes anterior plating, almost entirely prohibiting symphyseal mobility and resulting in an iatrogenic arthrodesis followed by high rates of implant failure. Minimally invasive tape suture constructs have been found to maintain the micro mobility of ligamentous injuries, yet still providing sufficient biomechanical stability. Recently, this technique has been primarily investigated for symphyseal disruptions on synthetic pelvic models. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of this novel

A Proposal of a Motion Measurement System to Support Visually Impaired People in Rehabilitation Using Low-Cost Inertial Sensors.

The rehabilitation of a visually impaired person (VIP) is a systematic process where the person is provided with tools that allow them to deal with the impairment to achieve personal autonomy and independence, such as training for the use of the long cane as a tool for orientation and mobility (O&M). This process must be trained personally by specialists, leading to a limitation of human, technological and structural resources in some regions, especially those with economical narrow circumstances. A system to obtain information about the motion of the long cane and the leg using low-cost inert…

Effect of warm-up and muscle fatiguing exercise on knee joint sounds in motion by vibroarthrography: A randomized crossover trial.

Vibroarthrography measures joint sounds caused by sliding of the joint surfaces over each other. and can be affected by joint health, load and type of movement. Since both warm-up and muscle fatigue lead to local changes in the knee joint (e.g., temperature increase, lubrication of the joint, muscle activation), these may impact knee joint sounds. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of warm-up and muscle fatiguing exercise on knee joint sounds during an activity of daily living. Seventeen healthy, physically active volunteers (25.7 ± 2 years, 7 males) performed a control and an inte

Analysis of the Relative Motion Between the Socket and Residual Limb in Transtibial Amputees While Wearing a Transverse Rotation Adapter.

The coupling between the residual limb and the lower-limb prosthesis is not rigid. As a result, external loading produces movement between the prosthesis and residual limb that can lead to undesirable soft-tissue shear stresses. As these stresses are difficult to measure, limb loading is commonly used as a surrogate. However, the relationship between limb loading and the displacements responsible for those stresses remains unknown. To better understand the limb motion within the socket, an inverse kinematic analysis was performed to estimate the motion between the socket and tibia for 10 indiv…

Arthroscopic arthrolysis leads to improved range of motion and health-related quality of life in post-traumatic elbow stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic elbow stiffness is a frequent and disabling complication after elbow trauma. Surgical release is needed if conservative treatment fails. In contrast to open surgical release, arthroscopic arthrolysis is a good and least invasive option to restore joint mobility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes, range of motion (ROM), and function of post-traumatic elbow contracture after arthroscopic arthrolysis and to assess health-related quality of life (HRQL). METHODS: Between 2007 and 2013, 44 patients with post-traumatic elbow stiffness were treated…
