Decolonising Healthcare Through Curricula: Integrating Indigenous Knowledges and Person-Centred Practice Through the Integrated Indigenous and Person-Centred Practice Theory and Framework.

AIM AND DESIGN: Indigenous knowledge systems offer enduring, relational and strengths-based frameworks for health and wellbeing. This theory and framework paper critically analyses how colonial legacies embedded in nursing curricula marginalise Indigenous knowledges and perpetuate inequities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We argue that current approaches, often fragmented, tokenistic and additive in nature, fail to address the structural and pedagogical roots of unsafe cultural practices and institutional racism in nursing education. RESULTS: In response, we present the In

Electronic cigarette use and risk of incident rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus in the all of us research program.

BACKGROUND: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are increasingly used as a substitute or in addition to cigarettes. Although cigarette smoking is a well-established risk factor for both rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the association between e-cigarette use and the development of RA or SLE remains unclear. We investigated e-cigarette use and the risk of incident RA or SLE. METHODS: Using All of Us Research Program (version 8) data, e-cigarette current users were matched by age, sex, race/ethnicity, enrollment year, and cigarette smoking status to non-users,

Learning from authentic patient narratives in nursing education using Gibbs' Reflective Cycle: A qualitative study using reflexive thematic analysis.

AIM: This study aimed to explore what nursing students learned from a real-life narrative shared by a person living with multiple sclerosis (MS) in a classroom setting and how this experience shaped their professional awareness within a structured reflective framework informed by Gibbs' Reflective Cycle. BACKGROUND: Patient narratives can strengthen experiential and reflective learning by helping students move beyond disease-focused knowledge toward a more person-centred understanding of illness. However, evidence remains limited on how structured reflection captures learning from chronic ill

Risk of Second Primary Cancers in Melanoma Survivors: A Retrospective Hospital-Based Cohort Study from Two Romanian Referral Centres.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Melanoma survivors may develop additional primary malignancies, but data from Eastern European hospital cohorts are scarce. We aimed to estimate the observed incidence of second primary cancers (SPCs) within a Romanian referral-centre cohort, identify associated factors, and explore the association of SPC occurrence with overall survival. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, hospital-based cohort study of 394 patients with histopathologically confirmed cutaneous melanoma followed at two referral centres in Cluj-Napoca. Additional malignancies were counted as new p

Electromyography (EMG)-triggered transcutaneous spinal cord and hip stimulation for gait rehabilitation in persons with chronic stroke: a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous spinal stimulation has been applied to gait rehabilitation for persons with neurological diseases. The authors developed electromyography-triggered transcutaneous spinal cord and hip stimulation for gait rehabilitation and called this system FAST walk. This study aimed to assess the effect of FAST walk in a randomized, controlled trial. METHODS: All participants were randomly allocated to three groups: FAST walk combined with treadmill gait training (FAST walk); spinal stimulation combined with treadmill gait training (spinal stim); and treadmill gait training (trea

Achieving universal reproductive health coverage for deaf women in Ghana: an explanatory study of knowledge of contraceptive methods, pregnancy and safe abortion practices.

BACKGROUND: The first world conference on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) in 1994 helped create the awareness that reproductive health is a human right. Over the years, attempts have been made to extend services to all persons; however, lapses persist in service provision for all in need. Recently, countries have been encouraged to target minority groups in their reproductive health service provision. However, studies have rarely attempted to develop deeper insights into the experiences of deaf men and women regarding their knowledge of SRH. The purpose of this study was to develop an in-

Zoonotic Transmission of Blastocystis Subtype 1 among People in Eastern Communities of Thailand: Organic Fertilizer from Pig Feces as a Potential Source.

Blastocystis sp., the most common intestinal protozoa, remains a public health problem among people in many countries, particularly in rural areas of developing countries. The infection usually reflects poor sanitation in communities by waterborne, zoonotic, and person-to-person transmission. Interestingly, at least 17 subtypes (STs) have been reported and are associated with a broad range of animal hosts, including humans. In this study, we reported potential evidence of zoonotic transmission of Blastocystis ST1 in rural communities of eastern Thailand where the overall prevalence of Blastocy

Empathy as a "risky strength": a multilevel examination of empathy and risk for internalizing disorders.

Learning to respond to others' distress with well-regulated empathy is an important developmental task linked to positive health outcomes and moral achievements. However, this important interpersonal skill set may also confer risk for depression and anxiety when present at extreme levels and in combination with certain individual characteristics or within particular contexts. The purpose of this review is to describe an empirically grounded theoretical rationale for the hypothesis that empathic tendencies can be "risky strengths." We propose a model in which typical development of affective an

Anatomical brain images alone can accurately diagnose chronic neuropsychiatric illnesses.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnoses using imaging-based measures alone offer the hope of improving the accuracy of clinical diagnosis, thereby reducing the costs associated with incorrect treatments. Previous attempts to use brain imaging for diagnosis, however, have had only limited success in diagnosing patients who are independent of the samples used to derive the diagnostic algorithms. We aimed to develop a classification algorithm that can accurately diagnose chronic, well-characterized neuropsychiatric illness in single individuals, given the availability of sufficiently precise delineations of brain r

Personal child and mother carbon monoxide exposures and kitchen levels: methods and results from a randomized trial of woodfired chimney cookstoves in Guatemala (RESPIRE).

During the first randomized intervention trial (RESPIRE: Randomized Exposure Study of Pollution Indoors and Respiratory Effects) in air pollution epidemiology, we pioneered application of passive carbon monoxide (CO) diffusion tubes to measure long-term personal exposures to woodsmoke. Here we report on the protocols and validations of the method, trends in personal exposure for mothers and their young children, and the efficacy of the introduced improved chimney stove in reducing personal exposures and kitchen concentrations. Passive diffusion tubes originally developed for industrial hygiene

The Unique Effects of Identity Centrality and Discrimination on Mental Health in Latinx Sexual Minoritized Emerging Adults.

Latinx sexual minoritized emerging adults (SMEA) face heightened mental health risks due to compounded ethnic-racial and sexual orientation-based discrimination. This study examined how personal, ethnic-racial, U.S. and sexual orientation identity centrality relates to mental health and moderates the effects of discrimination. In a sample of 220 Latinx SMEA (74.1% female, Mage = 20.13 years, SD = 1.43, 18-24 years old) personal and ethnic-racial identity centrality were positively associated with psychological well-being. U.S. identity centrality was negatively associated with symptoms of anxi

Minimum Intervention Oral Care (MIOC) - Overcoming Implementation Barriers: An International Expert Consensus.

OBJECTIVES: The minimum intervention oral health care (MIOC) delivery framework shifts restorative dentistry from a predominantly operative, procedure-centred model towards a person-focused, prevention-oriented and tooth-preserving approach. This international consensus aimed to develop agreed, evidence-informed recommendations to support uptake of MIOC. METHODS: A structured expert consensus process was conducted. Sixteen international experts participated in a structured in-person meeting and consented on fourteen recommendations, all with 100% agreement. RESULTS: Implementation of MIOC re

A 360 Degree Qualitative Ethical Assessment of Reporting Patient Reported Outcomes.

While guidelines exist for returning genetic, biomarker, and radiologic research results, there is little guidance regarding the return of patient-reported outcome (PRO) research results. As a supplement to an ongoing trial of palliative care for Parkinson's disease, we conducted thirty qualitative, semi-structured interviews of persons with Parkinson's disease, their carepartners, community neurologists, primary care physicians, and researchers to elicit their perceptions of returning PRO research data to persons with Parkinson's disease and carepartners. Interviews were audio-taped, transcri

Massive Hypopharyngeal Dilatation and Cervical Lung Herniation in a Semi-Professional Wind Instrument Player: Highlighting the Necessity of Personalized Diagnostic and Management Strategies.

Wind instrument performance requires sustained and repetitive increases in intrathoracic and pharyngeal pressures, which may lead to rare but clinically relevant anatomical alterations of the upper aerodigestive tract. We report the case of a 46-year-old male semi-professional wind instrument player who developed massive hypopharyngeal dilatation and cervical lung herniation as a consequence of long-term, high-pressure musical activity. Dynamic imaging performed during instrument playing demonstrated marked hypopharyngeal expansion and herniation of the lung apices into the cervical region, hi

Smart contact lens-trained digital twin for device-free personalized uric acid prediction.

Tears contain valuable biomarkers and offer potential for noninvasive disease monitoring. However, the lack of correlation analysis between serum uric acid (SUA) and tear uric acid (TUA) has limited their clinical application in personalized medicine. Here, we present a wireless smart contact lens capable of real-time, noninvasive monitoring of TUA as an alternative to blood-based UA testing. We validated the device through correlation analysis in rabbits and human participants, including individuals with hyperuricemia and gout. Daily-life monitoring enabled personalized characterization of TU

Absence of care among community-dwelling older adults with dementia and functional limitations.

Assistance with daily activities is crucial for persons living with dementia and functional limitations, yet many face substantial challenges in accessing adequate care and support. Using harmonized longitudinal survey data (2012-2018) from the United States, England, 18 European countries, Israel and China, we found that at least one-fifth of persons with dementia and functional limitations received no personal assistance for basic activities of daily living or instrumental activities of daily living, regardless of regional development level. Care gaps were widespread across both basic activi

Chest Radiograph Screening for Detecting Subclinical Tuberculosis in Asymptomatic Household Contacts, Peru.

The World Health Organization's end TB strategy promotes the use of symptom and chest radiograph screening for tuberculosis (TB) disease. However, asymptomatic early states of TB beyond latent TB infection and active disease can go unrecognized using current screening criteria. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study enrolling household contacts initially free of TB disease and followed them for the occurrence of incident TB over 1 year. Among 1,747 screened contacts, 27 (52%) of the 52 persons in whom TB subsequently developed during follow-up had a baseline abnormal radiograph. Of contacts
