Incorporating axillary-lateral thoracic vessel juncture dosimetric variables improves model for predicting lymphedema in patients with breast cancer: A validation analysis.

BACKGROUND: A relationship between the axillary-lateral thoracic vessel juncture (ALTJ) dose and lymphedema rate has been reported in patients with breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to validate this relationship and explore whether incorporation of the ALTJ dose-distribution parameters improves the prediction model's accuracy. METHODS: A total of 1,449 women with breast cancer who were treated with multimodal therapies from two institutions were analyzed. We categorized regional nodal irradiation (RNI) as limited RNI, which excluded level I/II, vs extensive RNI, which included leve

Protocol for developing a personalised prediction model for viral suppression among under-represented populations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Sustained viral suppression, an indicator of long-term treatment success and mortality reduction, is one of four strategic areas of the 'Ending the HIV Epidemic' federal campaign launched in 2019. Under-represented populations, like racial or ethnic minority populations, sexual and gender minority groups, and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, are disproportionately affected by HIV and experience a more striking virological failure. The COVID-19 pandemic might magnify the risk of incomplete viral suppression among under-represented people living with HIV (PLWH) due to i

Predicting childhood obesity using electronic health records and publicly available data.

BACKGROUND: Because of the strong link between childhood obesity and adulthood obesity comorbidities, and the difficulty in decreasing body mass index (BMI) later in life, effective strategies are needed to address this condition in early childhood. The ability to predict obesity before age five could be a useful tool, allowing prevention strategies to focus on high risk children. The few existing prediction models for obesity in childhood have primarily employed data from longitudinal cohort studies, relying on difficult to collect data that are not readily available to all practitioners. Analysis of near infrared spectra for age-grading of wild populations of Anopheles gambiae.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the age-structure of mosquito populations, especially malaria vectors such as Anopheles gambiae, is important for assessing the risk of infectious mosquitoes, and how vector control interventions may impact this risk. The use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) for age-grading has been demonstrated previously on laboratory and semi-field mosquitoes, but to date has not been utilized on wild-caught mosquitoes whose age is externally validated via parity status or parasite infection stage. In this study, we developed regression and classification models using NIRS on d

Identifying COVID-19 Disease Severity in Real-World Data: Implications for Medical Product Effectiveness Studies.

PURPOSE: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defined disease severity criteria to assist clinical development of medical products for management of COVID-19. These definitions were translated to code-based algorithms for use in real-world data. We validated the algorithms' performance in ambulatory settings at three regional integrated healthcare delivery systems contributing data to FDA's Sentinel System. METHODS: We identified cohorts of individuals ≥ 18 years that met the algorithms' criteria for mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 at incident COVID-19 diagnosis or positive SARS-Co

Validation of case-ascertainment algorithms using health administrative data to identify people who inject drugs in Ontario, Canada.

OBJECTIVES: Health administrative data can be used to improve the health of people who inject drugs by informing public health surveillance and program planning, monitoring, and evaluation. However, methodological gaps in the use of these data persist due to challenges in accurately identifying injection drug use (IDU) at the population level. In this study, we validated case-ascertainment algorithms for identifying people who inject drugs using health administrative data in Ontario, Canada. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Data from cohorts of people with recent (past 12 months) IDU, including thos

A Validated Algorithm for Register-Based Identification of Patients with Relapse of Clinical Stage I Testicular Cancer.

PURPOSE: The Danish Testicular Cancer (DaTeCa) database aims to monitor and improve quality of care for testicular cancer patients. Relapse data registered in the DaTeCa database rely on manual registration. Currently, some safeguarding against missing registrations is attempted by a non-validated register-based algorithm. However, this algorithm is inaccurate and entails time-consuming medical record reviews. We aimed (1) to validate relapse data as registered in the DaTeCa database, and (2) to develop and validate an improved register-based algorithm identifying patients diagnosed with relap

Capacity of non-invasive hepatic fibrosis algorithms to replace transient elastography to exclude cirrhosis in people with hepatitis C virus infection: A multi-centre observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Achievement of the 2030 World Health Organisation (WHO) global hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination targets will be underpinned by scale-up of testing and use of direct-acting antiviral treatments. In Australia, despite publically-funded testing and treatment, less than 15% of patients were treated in the first year of treatment access, highlighting the need for greater efficiency of health service delivery. To this end, non-invasive fibrosis algorithms were examined to reduce reliance on transient elastography (TE) which is currently utilised for the assessment of cirrhosis in mo

Comparative analysis of tissue-specific anticancer peptide prediction models: ACP-Boost framework.

Cancer remains a major global health burden, and conventional treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are often limited by systemic toxicity, drug resistance, and high cost. Anticancer peptides (ACPs) have emerged as promising therapeutic candidates because of their selective activity against tumor cells; however, experimental identification of ACPs is labor-intensive and time-consuming, and peptide activity may vary across tissue contexts. Although many computational models have been developed for general ACP prediction, tissue-specific ACP classification remains insufficie

Prediction of tumor regression grading in rectal cancer neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy: a habitat radiomics analysis of imaging biomarker.

BACKGROUND: Tumor regression grading (TRG) is a core prognostic predictor of treatment outcomes in rectal cancer. Conventional TRG assessment methods are limited in capturing the full complexity of intratumoral heterogeneity. Advances in medical imaging, particularly radiomics and habitat-based analysis, hold promise the improve TRG prediction by quantitatively characterizing subregional tumor features. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of habitat radiomics in preoperatively predicting TRG in rectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). METHODS: Computed t

Integrating Multi-Omics and Machine Learning to Predict Microplastic Cytotoxicity Under Leave-One-Polymer-Out Validation.

Microplastic (MP) cytotoxicity prediction remains challenging because available experimental datasets are limited and biological responses vary substantially among polymers. This study integrated multi-omics, physicochemical descriptors, and machine learning to predict MP cytotoxicity in BEAS-2B (a human bronchial epithelial cell line) cells. Biological descriptors were derived from multi-omics screening and concentration-dependent validation, while Z-Ave (hydrodynamic average particle size), zeta potential, and concentration were used as physicochemical descriptors. Using 50 original polymer-
