Cultural model of self-stigma among Chinese with substance use problems.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is regarded as one of the most stigmatizing conditions worldwide. To achieve recovery, individuals with substance use problems must learn to cope with stigma. Despite the potential importance of cultural factors in the internalization process of stigma, few studies have incorporated culturally salient factors in understanding self-stigma. We responded to this gap in the literature by investigating a mechanism of self-stigma that focused on a cultural value salient to the Chinese-face concern. Specifically, we hypothesized that two types of face concern (mianzi concern

Setting Win Limits: An Alternative Approach to "Responsible Gambling"?

Social scientists, governments, and the casino industry have all emphasized the need for casino patrons to "gamble responsibly." Strategies for responsible gambling include self-imposed time limits and loss limits on gambling. Such strategies help prevent people from losing more than they can afford and may help prevent excessive gambling behavior. Yet, loss limits also make it more likely that casino patrons leave when they are losing. Oddly, the literature makes no mention of "win limits" as a potential approach to responsible gambling. A win limit would be similar to a loss limit, except th

"Who is talking to me?" - Self-other attribution of auditory hallucinations and sulcation of the right temporoparietal junction.

Brain imaging research in schizophrenia has provided a better understanding of the neural basis of auditory hallucinations (AH). Recently, renewed interest in the phenomenology of AH raised questions related to their neural substrates. Hence, the neural basis of AH self/other attribution have yet to be investigated as beliefs regarding the origin of the voices is a cardinal feature of AH phenomenology. As the right temporoparietal junction (TPJ) and the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) play a key role in disentangling the origin of sensory events and in self/other distinction, we tested the hypo

A self-management programme for COPD: a randomised controlled trial.

Studies of programmes of self-management support for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been inconclusive. The Self-Management Programme of Activity, Coping and Education (SPACE) FOR COPD is a 6-week self-management intervention for COPD, and this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention in primary care. A single-blind randomised controlled trial recruited people with COPD from primary care and randomised participants to receive usual care or SPACE FOR COPD. Outcome measures were performed at baseline, 6 weeks and 6 months. The primary outcome was symptom b

Self-report measures in the study of comorbidity in children and adolescents with social phobia: research and clinical utility.

We examined differences in self-reported anxiety and depression according to the number and pattern of DSM-IV comorbid diagnoses in 172 children and adolescents (mean age=11.87, S.D.=2.67; range=7-17) with a primary diagnosis of social phobia. Three hypotheses were tested: (1) children with comorbid anxiety disorders would show significantly higher scores than children with social phobia-only on self-report measures, (2) self-report measures would significantly differentiate between children with social phobia and comorbid internalizing versus externalizing disorders, and (3) self-report measu

Binge cocaine self-administration by humans: smoked cocaine.

Tolerance develops to the cardiovascular and subjective effects of intravenous cocaine during single self-administration sessions, but diminishes within 3 h after the session ends. To examine whether a similar pattern of tolerance occurs to smoked cocaine, seven adult 'crack' cocaine users completed a protocol investigating changes in behavior during the repeated self-administration of smoked cocaine. During sessions, participants could self-administer up to 6 doses of smoked cocaine (50 mg per dose), one every 14 min. Both two- and three-day binge conditions were tested. During the two-day bi

Factors Associated with Self-Harm Attempts Among Female Adolescents with Self-Reported Reclusive Tendencies in Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Self-harm attempts among adolescents represent a major public health concern, often associated with depression, low self-esteem, and social withdrawal. While excessive smartphone use is generally linked to internalizing distress, digital engagement might play complex roles among socially isolated youth. This study examined factors associated with self-harm attempts among female adolescents with self-reported reclusive tendencies in South Korea, with a specific focus on evaluating the exploratory role of smartphone overdependence. METHODS: Secondary data analysis was con

Repeated footshock stress enhances cocaine self-administration in male and female rats: Role of the cannabinoid receptor 1.

Stress is a significant contributor to the development and progression of substance use disorders (SUDs) and is problematic as it is unavoidable in daily life. Therefore, it is important to understand the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie the influence of stress on drug use. We have previously developed a model of rat self-administration that employs an electric footshock stressor at the time of cocaine self-administration, resulting in an enhancement of cocaine self-administration. This stress enhancement of cocaine intake involves neurobiological mediators of stress and reward such as

Stage 2 registered report: investigating a preference for certainty in conversation among autistic adults.

Social communication difficulties are a diagnostic feature in autism. These difficulties are sometimes attributed, at least in part, to impaired ability in making inferences about what other people mean. In this registered report, we tested a competing hypothesis that the communication profile of adults on the autism spectrum can be more strongly characterised by reduced confidence in making inferences in the face of uncertain information. We tested this hypothesis by comparing the performance of 102 autistic and 109 non-autistic adults on a test of implied meaning, using a test of grammatical

Self-perceived cognitive fluctuations and their relationship to everyday functioning in older adults with and without HIV disease.

Objective: HIV is associated with elevated performance-based cognitive intra-individual variability (IIV) in the laboratory that can reflect difficulty regulating cognitive resources over time (i.e., cognitive fluctuations) and disrupt everyday functioning. Whether persons living with HIV (PLWH) experience appreciable cognitive fluctuations in their daily lives is unclear. This study examined the presence of cognitive fluctuations and their relationship to everyday functioning in PLWH. Methods: Participants were 145 PLWH and 61 seronegative individuals age ≥ 50 years who completed a self-repor

The relational foundation of self-determined drive in adolescent athletes: linking perceived relationship with parents to autonomous motivation.

BACKGROUND: The motivational orientation of adolescent athletes is a primary determinant of their long-term trajectories, yet the precise mechanisms through which the relational foundation provided by parents is internalized into a self-determined drive remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the psychological pathways between the perceived relationship with parents and autonomous motivation, specifically examining the sequential mediating roles of global self-esteem and domain-specific athletic identity among elite youth soccer players. METHODS: Data were collected from 237

Self-Controlled Feedback on Motor Learning and Neuroplastic Changes in People With Parkinson Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: People with Parkinson disease (PD) experience impaired motor learning. Although numerous studies have shown that self-controlled feedback can facilitate motor learning in healthy young adults, whether similar benefits can be observed in people with PD has been less investigated. This study thus aimed to examine whether self-controlled feedback could benefit motor learning for individuals with PD, and to determine the associated behavioral and neurophysiological mechanisms. METHODS: Thirty-two participants with PD, matched in pairs, were recruited into a self-control gr

Exploring the Expression and Perceived Relational Correlates of Perfectionism in Higher Education: A Multicenter Study.

Background: Perfectionism is a multidimensional disposition marked by exceptionally high standards and self-worth contingent on flawless performance. In university settings, academic demands may amplify perfectionistic pressure, with maladaptive outcomes most consistently linked to socially prescribed expectations and self-critical failure processing. This study profiled perfectionism dimensions in Italian university students and examined their associations with perceived relational and self-related correlates (Roots). Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted with Italian uni
