An introduction to Kundalini yoga meditation techniques that are specific for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

The ancient system of Kundalini yoga includes a vast array of meditation techniques and many were discovered to be specific for treating the psychiatric disorders as we know them today. One such technique was found to be specific for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the fourth most common psychiatric disorder, and the tenth most disabling disorder worldwide. Two published clinical trials are described here for treating OCD using a specific Kundalini yoga protocol. This OCD protocol also includes techniques that are useful for a wide range of anxiety disorders, as well as a techniq

The concept of primary fibromyalgia (fibrositis): clinical value, relation and significance to other chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes.

PFS, MPS and TMPDS can be identified using positive diagnostic criteria among patients presenting with chronic pain. A directed rather than exhaustive search for organic diseases known to coexist with these syndromes is usually all that is necessary. Criteria are presently empirical but do identify homogeneous populations of patients for study and treatment. Some patients, however, provide examples of overlap and it may be useful to think of CMPS in terms of the Venn diagram depicted in Fig. 2. In this report we have attempted an initial classification for a group of common and perplexing chro

[Psychotic depression. 1. Classification, etio-pathophysiology, epidemiology, sympatomatology, diagnosis].

The term "depression" is used to describe a normal mood, a medical symptom, and a collection of psychiatric symptoms. As a normal mood, depression is a common human reaction to a significant loss; as a medical term, it is also used to describe the sadness seen in patients who have other severe medical and psychiatric disorders. Most often, however, "depression" refers to a group of psychiatric syndromes or illnesses with well defined symptoms only one of which is sadness. Depression syndromes are probably universal. There are accounts of depressive illness throughout history from almost every

Treating sleep disturbances in refugees and asylum seekers: results from a randomized controlled pilot trial evaluating the STARS group intervention.

Background: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in traumatized refugees and often persist despite treatment, and adapted scalable interventions are needed. The group intervention 'Sleep Training adapted for Refugees' (STARS) is a culturally- and context-sensitive approach based on evidence-based treatments for sleep disturbances (e.g. CBT-I, IRT). This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of STARS.Method: A randomized-controlled trial (STARS vs. waitlist) with 47 young male Afghan refugees was conducted in a routine clinical setting (DRKS-ID: DRKS00024419) with

Recommendations of the schizophrenia expert center network for the screening prevention and treatment of sleep disorders based on the results from the real-world schizophrenia FACE-SZ national cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders associated factors are under explored in schizophrenia while the literature suggests high and heterogeneous frequency. AIMS: The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of sleep disorders in the real-world FACE-SZ national cohort. METHOD: Stabilized schizophrenic outpatients were recruited in 10 expert centers for schizophrenia. Sleep quality was explored with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and sleep disorders was defined by a PSQI score > 5. Psychosis severity was measured with the Positive and Negative Syndrome

[Sleep difficulties and psychological symptoms in medicine students in Mexico].

The purpose of this study was to describe sleep difficulties in first year medical students associated with psychopathological symptoms. A cross-sectional study in 572 Medicine students, who were assessed by the Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), was performed. A 3.5% of students reported having a hard time sleeping, 6.3% had difficulty staying asleep and 11.4% waking up very early. Sleep difficulties were significantly associated with all psychopathological symptoms. The best predictors of sleep difficulties were anxiety, hostility and interpersonal sensitivity. In conclusion, the symptoms assoc

How is good and poor sleep in older adults and college students related to daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and ability to concentrate?

We compared good sleepers with minimally and highly distressed poor sleepers on three measures of daytime functioning: self-reported fatigue, sleepiness, and cognitive inefficiency. In two samples (194 older adults, 136 college students), we tested the hypotheses that (1) poor sleepers experience more problems with daytime functioning than good sleepers, (2) highly distressed poor sleepers report greater impairment in functioning during the day than either good sleepers or minimally distressed poor sleepers, (3) daytime symptoms are more closely related to psychological adjustment and to psych

Prospective Associations of COVID-19 Pandemic-Related Stressful Events With Mental and Sleep Health in a Population-Based Cohort Study of Adults With SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

COVID-19 pandemic-related stressful events are associated with adverse mental health outcomes; however, prior evidence is limited due to cross-sectional designs or convenience sampling, with little focus on sleep health. We examined prospective associations of COVID-19 pandemic-related stressful events at baseline with mental health and sleep health at follow-up using a population-based cohort of Michigan adults with PCR-confirmed COVID-19. We measured COVID-19-related stressful events using the 6-item Epidemic-Pandemic Impacts Inventory (EPII), designed to assess pandemic impacts across perso

Sleep disorders and mortality: A prospective study in the Canadian longitudinal study on aging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sleep disorders are commonly linked to various health conditions, although it remains unclear to what degree they are linked with overall mortality. We compared mortality in different self-reported sleep disorders in a large population-based prospective study. METHODS: In this case-control study within the CLSA cohort, participants completed a questionnaire at baseline (2011-2015) measuring overall sleep satisfaction, daily sleep duration, sleep-onset and sleep-maintenance insomnia, daytime somnolence, REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), restless leg syndrome (RLS),

Abnormal patterns of sleep and EEG power distribution during non-rapid eye movement sleep in the sheep model of Huntington's disease.

Sleep disruption is a common invisible symptom of neurological dysfunction in Huntington's disease (HD) that takes an insidious toll on well-being of patients. Here we used electroencephalography (EEG) to examine sleep in 6 year old OVT73 transgenic sheep (Ovis aries) that we used as a presymptomatic model of HD. We hypothesized that despite the lack of overt symptoms of HD at this age, early alterations of the sleep-wake pattern and EEG powers may already be present. We recorded EEG from female transgenic and normal sheep (5/group) during two undisturbed 'baseline' nights with different light

Effect of Wakefulness-Promoting Agents on Sleepiness in Patients with Sleep Apnea Treated with CPAP: A Meta-Analysis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To perform a meta-analysis of the effect of wakefulness-promoting agents (modafinil and armodafinil) in patients with residual sleepiness after CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE (1966 to September 2014), EMBASE (1980 to September 2014) and Cochrane Database for randomized placebo controlled trials on modafinil or armodafinil in patients who met established criteria for diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea, adequate continuous positive airway pressure use, and who complained of residual sleepiness. Risk of bias was

Disrupted Cortico-Striato-Thalamo-Cortical Circuitry and Sleep Disturbances in Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum, Chronic Tic, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders.

The bidirectional relationship between sleep and obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders (OCSDs), chronic tic disorders (CTDs), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not well understood. To better treat individuals with these co-occurring sleep and developmental neuropsychiatric conditions, it is necessary to determine the common neural underpinnings to then target with treatment. Research has implicated dysregulated cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) neurocircuitry in the development of CTDs, OCSDs, and ADHD. We review current literature to assess the state of knowledge

Sleep Management Among Patients with Substance Use Disorders.

Sleep and substance use disorders commonly co-occur. Insomnia is commonly associated with use and withdrawal from substances. Circadian rhythm abnormalities are being increasingly linked with psychoactive substance use. Other sleep disorders, such as sleep-related breathing disorder, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of insomnia, especially in those with opioid use or alcohol use disorder. Insomnia that is brief or occurs in the context of active substance use is best treated by promoting abstinence. A referral to a sleep medicine clinic should be considered for those with chr
