Untangling the genomics of noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus: Contributions of Mus musculus and Homo sapiens.

Acoustic trauma is a feature of the industrial age, in general, and mechanized warfare, in particular. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and tinnitus have been the number 1 and number 2 disabilities at U.S. Veterans hospitals since 2006. In a reversal of original protocols to identify candidate genes associated with monogenic deafness disorders, unbiased genome-wide association studies now direct animal experiments in order to explore genetic variants common in Homo sapiens. However, even these approaches must utilize animal studies for validation of function and understanding of mechanisms. A

Rifle impulse noise affects middle-ear compliance in soldiers wearing protective earplugs.

OBJECTIVE: We tested middle-ear functioning in humans following intense exposure to noise. Noise generated by small caliber firearms was thought to have no effect on the middle-ear. DESIGN: A cross-over design. We measured middle-ear impedance, acoustic reflex, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) before and after practice rounds performed twice per day. STUDY SAMPLE: Fifty-nine soldiers equipped with earplugs undergoing regular training for a special mission. The mean noise exposure (LAeq8h) was estimated to be 106 ±1 dB SPL.

Language-independent automatic evaluation of intelligibility of chronically hoarse persons.

OBJECTIVE: Automatic intelligibility assessment using automatic speech recognition is usually language specific. In this study, a language-independent approach is proposed. It uses models that are trained with Flemish speech, and it is applied to assess chronically hoarse German speakers. The research questions are here: is it possible to construct suitable acoustic features that generalize to other languages and a speech disorder, and is the generated model for intelligibility also suitable for specific subtypes of that disorder, i.e. functional and organic dysphonia? PATIENTS AND METHODS: 7

Robust cortical encoding of slow temporal modulations of speech.

This study investigates the neural representation of speech in complex listening environments. Subjects listened to a narrated story, masked by either another speech stream or by stationary noise. Neural recordings were made using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which can measure cortical activity synchronized to the temporal envelope of speech. When two speech streams are presented simultaneously, cortical activity is predominantly synchronized to the speech stream the listener attends to, even if the unattended, competing-speech stream is more intense (up to 8 dB). When speech is presented tog

Experimental exploration of the soft tissue conduction pathway from skin stimulation site to inner ear.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory sensation can be elicited by air conduction (AC) and by bone conduction (BC). It is also possible to elicit such responses by applying the standard clinical bone vibrator to the skin over soft tissue sites on the head, neck, or thorax of humans and animals. This mode of auditory stimulation has been called soft tissue conduction (STC). This study was designed to investigate the pathway between soft tissue sites and the ear. METHODS: The air in the middle ear was replaced with saline solution in an animal with unique anatomy--the fat sand rat, in which about 70% of a thin-

Cepstral analysis of voice in unilateral adductor vocal fold palsy.

OBJECTIVES: Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) occurs because of the dysfunction of the vagus nerve innervating the larynx. It causes a characteristic breathy voice often accompanied by swallowing disability, a weak cough, and the sensation of shortness of breath. Clinical evaluation of voice is generally based on perceptive criteria and the acoustic analysis of voice. In the present study, it is hypothesized that there would be an abnormal reduction of the cepstral peak in speakers with UVFP relative to the normal controls, as they are characterized by a breathy voice because of inadequat

Common practices of voice therapists in the evaluation of patients.

This study surveys voice therapists regarding common diagnostic practices in patients referred for therapy with the diagnosis of muscle tension dysphonia (broadly defined as the "hyperfunctional" component of the dysphonia). Through postings on the e-mail list of the ASHA special interest division on voice, speech pathologists with at least 3 years' experience in stroboscopy and acoustic instrumentation were invited to complete the survey. Results from 53 completed surveys demonstrated that voice quality and patient self-perception are the sole assessments performed by all therapists. Voice qu

Prognostic significance of intraoperative facial nerve stimulus thresholds.

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative facial nerve monitoring has reduced the incidence of facial nerve paralysis associated with acoustic neuroma surgery, but poor facial nerve outcomes continue to occur. Intraoperative prediction of facial nerve outcome would be advantageous in patient management and counseling. This study seeks to evaluate intraoperative facial nerve stimulus thresholds as a tool for predicting postoperative facial nerve outcome. STUDY DESIGN: This study is a prospective clinical study of the prognostic value of intraoperative stimulus thresholds. SETTING: The study was performed at

Sociophonetic Investigation of the Spanish Alveolar Trill /r/ in Two Canonical-Trill Varieties.

The "hyper-variation" present in rhotic sounds makes them particularly apt for sociophonetic research. This paper investigates the variable realization of the voiced alveolar-trill phoneme /r/ through an acoustic analysis of unscripted speech produced by 80 speakers of Spanish. Although the most common phonetic variant of /r/ contained two lingual constrictions, we find substantial inter-speaker variation in our data, ranging from zero to five lingual contacts. The results demonstrate that the variation in Spanish results from a systematic interaction of factors, deriving from well-documented

Passive wideband concentric rings resonator for vocal cords abnormalities detection: Application on larynx cancer pathologies.

This work addresses the study and design of a diagnostic device consisting of a thin-film sensor array based on 8-mm concentered rings, acting as an autonomous acoustic sensor covering a wide range of resonance frequencies (0.1 KHz-2 MHz). In addition to its advantageous shape, this device integrates both the active vibratory element and the embedded electronics dedicated to coding, control, and analysis. The results show that the experimental device could be the basis of a telemedical platform for the objective assessment and monitoring of chronic laryngeal dysphonia through the spectro-tempo

Early Detection of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias From Spontaneous Speech Using Foundation Speech and Language Models: Comparative Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are progressive neurodegenerative conditions where early detection is critical for timely intervention and care planning. However, current diagnostic methods are often inaccessible, costly, and delayed, especially for underserved populations. There is a growing need for scalable, noninvasive tools that can support timely diagnosis. Spontaneous speech contains rich acoustic and linguistic markers that can serve as noninvasive behavioral markers for cognitive decline. Foundation models, pretrained on large-scale audio or text data, gen

Investigation of time-dependent diffusion in extra-axial brain tumors using oscillating-gradient spin-echo.

Oscillating gradient spin-echo (OGSE) sequences provide access to short diffusion times and may provide insight into micro-scale internal structures of pathologic lesions based on an analysis of changes in diffusivity with differing diffusion times. We hypothesized that changes in diffusivity acquired with a shorter diffusion time may permit elucidation of properties related to the internal structure of extra-axial brain tumors. This study aimed to investigate the utility of changes in diffusivity between short and long diffusion times for characterizing extra-axial brain tumors. In total, 12

[Sound sensations produced by electric stimulation of the structures of the middle ear and the tympanic chord].

Certain facts must be clearly understood before any attempt is made to analyse the sensations produced by electrical stimulation of the structures of the middle ear. Firstly, when the current passes from an electrode to the skin or to any polarised structure whatsoever, the point at which the electrode is applied and the skin behave like the two plates of a condenser microphone. Electrical vibrations are transformed into ordinary acoustic resonances which can travel through air or bone. These acoustic resonances are fairly pure in comparison with electrical vibrations, judged by the standards

Broad tunability of ultrasonic tweezer for multi‑droplet manipulation.

Controllable droplet manipulation is essential for applications from biochemical analysis to soft robotics. Despite significant advances, existing methods struggle to achieve broadly tunable, asynchronous control of multiple droplets, limiting their efficiency in three-dimensional and dynamic environments. Here, we introduce a droplet ultrasonic tweezer (DUT), which leverages broadly tunable acoustic control to enable three-dimensional multi-droplet manipulation and enhance condensing surface renewal. The DUT generates a twin-trap acoustic field from a single phased-array focal point, allowing

Negative radiation force on sound-hard non-spherical objects: Enhanced by geometric asymmetry and formation of negative stiffness system.

While analytical theories exist for predicting the negative radiation force on a sphere illuminated by an acoustic Bessel beam, addressing non-spherical objects and analyzing the influence of geometric features on the reversal of axial radiation force remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a theoretical framework combining addition theorem, conformal mapping, and partial-wave expansion to evaluate the acoustic radiation force on axisymmetric objects illuminated by Bessel beams. Our findings reveal that geometric asymmetry significantly influences axial radiation forces on sound-hard Mie objec
