Longitudinal examination of alcohol use: a predictor of risky sexual behavior and Trichomonas vaginalis among African-American female adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use has been linked to risky sexual practices among adolescents. However, limited research on alcohol use and risky sexual behavior has been conducted on African-American female adolescents. This study examined high quantity of alcohol as a longitudinal predictor of risky sexual behavior and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among African-American female adolescents, a high-risk population for STDs. METHODS: Three hundred ninety-three adolescent females, 15 to 21 years, were assessed on sociodemographics, alcohol use, and risky sexual behaviors. Participants also provid

Personal and perceived depression stigma in Australian adolescents: magnitude and predictors.

BACKGROUND: Depression stigma has been identified as a barrier to help-seeking in adolescents. This study aimed to examine and compare levels of personal and perceived depression stigma amongst Australian adolescents and to identify predictors of these constructs. METHODS: A total of 1,375 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years (M=14.34) completed the Depression Stigma Scale (DSS) and a number of other sociodemographic and symptom scale measurements as part of the pre-intervention questionnaire of the YouthMood Project. RESULTS: Levels of perceived stigma (M=20.53, SD=5.06) were significantly highe

Norwegian adolescents with asthma are physical active and fit.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding habitual physical activity levels and aerobic fitness of asthmatic compared to nonasthmatic children and adolescents is contradictory, and it is unclear if low physical activity levels can contribute to asthma development. The present study therefore aimed to determine whether adolescents with asthma have reduced physical activity levels and aerobic fitness, or increased energy intake and body fat compared to controls. METHODS: From the environment and childhood asthma study in Oslo, 174 (13- to 14-year old) adolescents, 95 (66 boys) with and 79 (41 boys) withou

Adolescents exposed to physical violence in the community: a survey in Brazilian public schools.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of adolescents who have been exposed to physical violence in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. METHODS: Fifty-two Porto Alegre public schools that offer basic primary education (grades 1 to 8) were selected through a random sampling process stratified according to school size. In May-November 2000 a screening survey that identifies exposure to violence--experienced personally, witnessed, or knowing victims of violent acts--was administered to all students who were attending a randomly selected 8th grade class in each of the 52 schools. RESULTS: The tota

Self-image of adolescents with cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a lethal genetic disease, yet improved care has extended the mean age of survival into the young adult years. Many of the surviving adolescents have respiratory and digestive problems which delay growth and sexual development. It has been suggested that the specter of fatal disease interferes with adjustment to adolescence. We administered the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire to three groups with mean height less than the fifth percentile: CF males aged 12-19 (n=16); CF females aged 12-19 (n=8); and otherwise healthy males with short stature and/or delayed puberty aged 13

Does bilingualism buffer genetic predispositions to reading difficulties through alterations of structural interhemispheric connectivity? An ABCD® Study.

Here, we test the hypothesis that early sustained exposure to complex bilingual environments can positively affect reading development by altering structural interhemispheric connectivity via the corpus callosum (CC). Interhemispheric connectivity has been shown to be inefficient in dyslexia, but also to support compensatory pathways when genetic risk for reading difficulties is present, by enabling the preserved right hemisphere to support a dysfunctional left hemisphere. Mediation models were conducted on children aged 9-10 years (with a 2-year follow-up assessment) from the Adolescent Brain

Obesity and cryptorchidism across development: an integrated endocrine and metabolic life course framework.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a major endocrine and metabolic disorder that extends beyond cardiometabolic risk and may affect male reproductive development. Cryptorchidism (undescended testis, UDT) is a common congenital anomaly associated with hypogonadism, subfertility, and testicular cancer. However, endocrine and metabolic links between obesity and impaired testicular descent remain incompletely integrated. OBJECTIVE: This mini review synthesizes current evidence into an integrated life-course framework explaining how obesogenic exposures, including maternal metabolic disease, postnat

Large-scale examination of hot and cool executive function in children born preterm.

Preterm birth can significantly impact cognitive development, particularly executive functions (EF). This study investigated hot (with emotional/motivational aspects) and cool (purely neutral/cognitive) EF trajectories in preterm and full-term children, examining brain-behavior relationships. It included 3508 participants aged 9-10 years (mean age 10.0 years) at baseline from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD®) study, evenly split between preterm and full-term births (54.36 % males; 1.05 % Asian American, 10.69 % Black, 15.68 % Hispanic, 61.57 % White, 11.09 % other). The cumulative impact of fine particulate matter exposure on hippocampal volume and working memory: Insights from prenatal and adolescent exposures from the ABCD study.

BACKGROUND: Global warming, urbanization, coal-burning pollution, and global wildfires draw attention to the necessity of bridging gaps in our current understanding of the effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on neurodevelopment. Despite evidence of environmental contaminants having deleterious effects on cognition and neurodevelopment in particularly sensitive areas like the hippocampus that have prolonged plasticity, much of this work examines a single time point (e.g., prenatal exposure) in single site studies. As a result, it is unclear whether deleterious effects accumulate over dev

Assessing attentional bias to emotions in adolescent offenders and nonoffenders.

Emotional processing is a cognitive function essential for the interaction of humans with their environment and the development of adaptive behaviors. Adolescent offenders (AOs) express difficulty in cognitive processes linked to emotional processing, which is a response consistently observed during the endogenous (i.e., controlled) control of attention. Less remains understood of the extent to which such atypical responses extend beyond controlled attention and influence exogenous mechanisms (i.e., automatic). This study explores this hypothesis using the recently devised emotional Flanker pa

Incidence and Radiological Risk Factors of Proximal Junctional Kyphosis in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Following Pedicle Screw Instrumentation with Rod Derotation and Direct Vertebral Rotation: A Minimum 5-Year Follow-Up Study.

Several studies have reported incidence and risk factors for the development of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, there is little information regarding long-term follow-up after pedicle screw instrumentation (PSI) with rod derotation (RD) and direct vertebral rotation (DVR). Sixty-nine AIS patients who underwent deformity correction using PSI with RD and DVR were retrospectively analyzed in two groups according to the occurrence of PJK, with a minimum five-year follow-up, including a non-PJK group (n = 62) and PJK group (n = 7).

Distinct Topological Properties of the Reward Anticipation Network in Preadolescent Children With Binge Eating Disorder Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have considered the neural underpinnings of binge eating disorder (BED) in children, despite clinical and subclinical symptom presentation occurring in this age group. Symptom presentation at this age is of clinical relevance, as early onset of binge eating is linked to negative health outcomes. Studies in adults have highlighted dysfunction in the frontostriatal reward system as a potential candidate for binge eating pathophysiology, although the exact nature of such dysfunction is currently unclear. METHOD: Data from 83 children (mean age 9.9 years, SD = 0.60) with sy

Depression and Social-Behavioral and Academic Functioning among Early Adolescents: The Role of Classroom Context.

Social context plays an important role in shaping the development of socioemotional functioning. This one-year longitudinal study examined the moderating effects of classroom peer acceptance of students with depression (CPASWD) on relations between individual depression and adjustment among early adolescents. Participants in this study were students (N = 2,153; 1,088 boys), initially in fifth grade (Mage = 11 years), in elementary schools in China. Data on depression, peer preference, and social and school adjustment were obtained from multiple sources including self-reports, peer nominations,

Brain Age in Conduct Disorder:: A Mega-Analysis of the ENIGMA Antisocial Behavior Working Group.

Conduct disorder (CD) is the leading global cause of mental health burden in children and adolescents and has recently been hypothesized to be a neurodevelopmental disorder. Although prior research has identified neuroanatomical differences associated with CD, it remains unclear whether these differences reflect atypical brain development. Here, we investigated the difference between an individual's brain age and chronological age as a proxy for variations in brain maturation. Using a pretrained model, we estimated brain age from structural neuroimaging data obtained from 1,119 youth with CD a

Multicomponent approach reveals differences in affective responses among children and adolescents.

Investigating age-related shifts in affective responses to emotionally salient stimuli is key to comprehending emotional development during childhood and adolescence. Most of the research regarding emotional experiences has focused on adults, while the understanding of the development of emotional experiences across childhood remains elusive. To address this gap, we explored whether physiological and behavioural responses as well as self-reported emotions elicited in children and adolescents by naturalistic stimuli differ from those in adults. We developed a set of emotional videos to elicit d

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): Likelihood of cooccurring neuropsychiatric conditions and the dual hit hypothesis.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic disorder in women of reproductive age. Hyperandrogenism has been proposed as its main pathophysiological feature. PCOS is associated with co-occurring conditions, including psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism. Exposure to hyperandrogenism during prenatal life and adolescence may explain this association. PCOS women exhibit hyperandrogenism during pregnancy, and up to 70% of their daughters will present a similar phenotype from puberty onwards. The 'dual hit hy

Obesity and its relationship with lifestyle behaviors among Kuwaiti adolescents revisited after 15 years: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle behaviors such as physical activity, sedentary time, sleep, and dietary habits play a central role in shaping adolescent health. In Kuwait, the Arab Teens Lifestyle Study (ATLS), conducted in 2009/2010, reported that nearly half of adolescents were overweight or obese, with physical inactivity and unhealthy dietary patterns emerging as key correlates. Over the past 15 years, profound societal changes, including accelerated digitalisation and shifts in food environments, may have further altered these patterns, yet updated nationally representative data are lacking. Assessment of Vertebral Body Bone Quality in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) Using Micro-CT, qBEI, and Nanoindentation-A Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common three-dimensional spinal deformity, predominantly affecting females aged 10-16 years. Although no single etiological factor has been definitively identified, alterations in bone quality and biomechanical properties have been proposed as contributing factors to AIS development. METHODS: We developed a surgical protocol to obtain trabecular bone biopsies from the apex vertebra during anterior corrective surgery for AIS. Multimodal analysis was performed on samples from eight AIS participants (14.8 ± 1.5 years), including micro
