Enhanced wear resistance of modified cross-linked polyethylene by grafting with poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine).

We developed a cross-linked polyethylene (CLPE) modified with a phospholipid polymer in order to address the serious problem of osteolysis caused by wear particles derived from the polyethylene components of artificial hip joints. Our goal of preventing aseptic loosening could be achieved by avoiding any formation of CLPE wear particles or suppressing the activation of cell systems by the wear particles. We investigated the surface and wear resistance properties of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymer grafted onto the surface of CLPE (CLPE-g-MPC). The relative density of MPC

Electrospun dual-porosity structure and biodegradation morphology of Montmorillonite reinforced PLLA nanocomposite scaffolds.

Combining a nanocomposite technique and the electrospinning process, a robust dual-porosity scaffold structure was developed for a facile transport of metabolic nutrients and wastes through the nano-sized pores and for the cell implantation and blood vessel invasion through the micro-sized pores. The montmorillonite (MMT) nano-sized platelets were incorporated into poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) solution, which was subsequently electrospun and mechanically entangled by a cold compression molding process for a robust 3-dimensional scaffold structure. Using a salt leaching/gas forming method, micro-

Radionuclides-hyaluronan-conjugate thromboresistant coatings to prevent in-stent restenosis.

Catheter-based brachytherapy is one of the most effective modalities to inhibit hyperplasia following revascularization procedures. Radioactive stents have failed, however, to prevent clinical hyperplasia due to excessive late lumen loss on the edge of the devices. Numerous strategies have been proposed to circumvent the drawbacks of irradiation therapies, such as the use of more appropriate radionuclides or the "hot-end" stents approach. This paper describes versatile radioactive devices obtained by coating plasma functionalized surfaces-stents or catheters-with a hyaluronan (HA)-diethylenetr

The interaction of Schwann cells with chitosan membranes and fibers in vitro.

The bridging of nerve gaps is still one of the major problems in peripheral nerve regeneration. A promising alternative for the repair of peripheral nerve injuries is the bioartificial nerve graft, comprised of a biomaterial pre-seeded with Schwann cells (SCs), which is an effective substrate for enhancing nerve regeneration. Interaction between cultured SCs and biomaterials is of importance. For the purposes of this study, culture systems of normal SCs were used. The biocompatibility of chitosan, including chitosan membranes and chitosan fibers, was evaluated in vitro. The growth of SCs was o

Carbon-carbon composite bearing materials in hip arthroplasty: analysis of wear and biological response to wear debris.

Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene wear particles have been implicated as the major cause of osteolysis, implant loosening and late aseptic failure in total hip arthroplasties in vivo. This study initially screened 22 carbon-carbon composite materials as alternatives for UHMWPE in joint bearings. New bearing materials should satisfy certain criteria--they should have good wear properties that at least match UHMWPE, and produce wear particles with low levels of cytotoxic and osteolytic activity. Initial screening was based on wear resistance determined in short-term tribological pin-on-pl

In vitro cytotoxicity of fibre-polymethyl methacrylate composite used in dentures.

The aim of this study was to determine the in vitro cytotoxicity of fibre-polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite used in denture bases. Both heat-cured and autopolymerized PMMA were tested as the matrix of the fibre composite or as a plain denture polymer. The fibres tested included unsized E-glass and silica fibres, silica fibres which were sized with a silane coupling agent only, as well as commercially epoxy-silane or methacrylate-chrome complex sized E-glass fibres. The indirect contact cytotoxicity test by agar diffusion was carried out according to the international standard ISO 10993-

Ex vivo evaluation of ferromagnetism, heating, and artifacts produced by heart valve prostheses exposed to a 1.5-T MR system.

Ex vivo testing techniques were used to determine the ferromagnetic qualities of, presence of heating in, and artifacts produced by 13 different heart valve prostheses exposed to a 1.5-T (64-MHz) magnetic resonance (MR) system. None of the heart valve prostheses showed a measurable deflection in the 1.5-T static magnetic field. Only minimal artifacts were produced during MR imaging with a fast spoiled GRASS (gradient-recalled acquisition in the steady state) pulse sequence. The largest temperature changes measured during a "worst case" MR imaging sequence (estimated average specific absorption

Predictive Modeling and Bioinspired Strategies for Stabilizing Hydrophilic Perovskite Quantum Dots in Multiplexed Biomedical Diagnostics.

Hydrophilic perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have emerged as promising materials for biomedical diagnostics due to their exceptional optical tunability and high photoluminescence quantum yield. However, their instability, toxicity, and degradation in aqueous and biological environments remain critical barriers to practical applications. This review integrates predictive modeling and bioinspired stabilization strategies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms governing PQD instability and the design of robust, biocompatible nanostructures. Multiscale computational approaches-in

Electrical Microenvironment Reconstruction and the Application of Biomaterials in Spinal Cord Injury.

The key challenge in restoring neural function after spinal cord injury stems from a vicious cycle triggered by the collapse of the bioelectrical microenvironment at the injury site: an 'electrical silence-neuronal degeneration-glial proliferation' cascade that conventional therapies fail to reverse. This review systematically summarizes the pathological mechanisms of electrical microenvironment imbalance and its critical role in neural regeneration. Furthermore, current intervention strategies based on biomaterials are outlined: evolving from passive reconstruction of electrical pathways usin

Light-based 3D printing of mechanoluminescent living gels loaded with dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates, a group of marine unicellular algae, are known for the fascinating glowing effects in coastal waters. While this natural mechanoluminescent phenomenon has been explored in pressure sensors and optical transducers, technologies to shape dinoflagellate-containing materials into more complex, engineering-relevant geometries remain limited. Here, we report a three-dimensional printing strategy to manufacture complex-shaped mechanoluminescent objects using dinoflagellates embedded in biocompatible hydrogels. The growth and mechanoluminescence of the entrapped dinoflagellates were i

Polyphenylalanine-Baicalein Nanomicelles Reduce Nerve Cell Apoptosis and Inflammation to Enhance Neuroprotection and Poststroke Rehabilitation.

Cerebral ischemic stroke, neuronal death, and inflammation bring difficulties in neuroprotection and rehabilitation. In this study, we developed and designed the ability of natural lactoferrin-polyethylene glycol-polyphenylalanine-baicalein nanomicelles (LF-PEG-PPhe-Bai) to target and reduce these pathological processes, such as neurological damage and cognitive impairment in the stages of poststroke. Nanomicelles made from biocompatible materials have improved bioavailability and targeted distribution to afflicted brain areas. The results showed that LF-PEG-PPhe-Bai greatly improved the antio…

A pH/ROS dual responsive smart microgel miRNA delivery system for repair of intervertebral disc degeneration.

The progression of intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is due to the progressive exacerbation of apoptosis and impaired extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis, both of which are induced by progressive inflammation. Therefore, addressing the inflammatory microenvironment and correcting excessive apoptosis of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) are key to achieving intervertebral disc (IVD) regeneration. In this study, we designed a microenvironment-responsive smart microgel gene delivery system that for the first time combines phenylboronic acid-functionalized microgels with strontium sulfite nanopa

Electron-donable heterojunctions with synergetic Ru-Cu pair sites for biocatalytic microenvironment modulations in inflammatory mandible defects.

The clinical treatments of maxillofacial bone defects pose significant challenges due to complex microenvironments, including severe inflammation, high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and potential bacterial infection. Herein, we propose the de novo design of an efficient, versatile, and precise electron-donable heterojunction with synergetic Ru-Cu pair sites (Ru-Cu/EDHJ) for superior biocatalytic regeneration of inflammatory mandible defects and pH-controlled antibacterial therapies. Our studies demonstrate that the unique structure of Ru-Cu/EDHJ enhances the electron density of Ru a

Cryoprotective Ice-Philic Black Phosphorus Nanosheets for Augmented Thawing of Frozen Cells.

Controlling ice formation is critical in fields such as atmospheric science and biological cryopreservation. However, thermal heterogeneity during freezing and thawing in cryopreservation causes uneven ice crystallization and melting, leading to mechanical and thermal stress-induced damage. This study introduces biocompatible and biodegradable black phosphorus (BP)-polyethylene glycol-amine nanosheets (NS) to address this issue. BP NS primarily localize at ice grain boundaries, while amine groups of NH2-PEG-NH2 form hydrogen bonds with H2O molecules, penetrating ice crystals. In situ cross-sec

A review on chitosan and its development as pulmonary particulate anti-infective and anti-cancer drug carriers.

Chitosan, as a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer, is characterized by anti-microbial and anti-cancer properties. It lately has received a widespread interest for use as the pulmonary particulate backbone materials of drug carrier for the treatment of infectious disease and cancer. The success of chitosan as pulmonary particulate drug carrier is a critical interplay of their mucoadhesive, permeation enhancement and site/cell-specific attributes. In the case of nanocarriers, various microencapsulation and micro-nano blending systems have been devised to equip them with an appropriate aerod
