Experiences of intensive care unit nurses in end-of-life care at Ho Teaching Hospital, Ghana: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers have an ethical obligation to provide quality end-of-life (EOL) care. Yet, substantial gaps persist in EOL practices globally and in Ghana specifically. Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are pivotal in EOL care but frequently experience distress and unpreparedness when caring for dying patients. Ho Teaching Hospital, a major regional referral center in Ghana, has begun initial efforts to improve EOL care. However, systematic integration of EOL care principles is still lacking. AIM: This study aims to explore the experiences of ICU nurses providing EOL care at the

A supervised machine learning statistical design of experiment approach to modeling the barriers to effective snakebite treatment in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming is a serious condition that affects 2.5 million people and causes 81,000-138,000 deaths every year, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The World Health Organization has set a goal to halve the deaths and disabilities related to snakebite envenoming by 2030. However, significant challenges in achieving this goal include a lack of robust research evidence related to snakebite incidence and treatment, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to combine established methodologies with the latest tools in Artificial Intelligence to assess t

To tell or not to tell: negotiating disclosure for people living with HIV on antiretroviral treatment in a South African setting.

Disclosure of HIV status occurs for a variety of reasons and in various contexts, such as to sexual partners to enable safer sexual choices, to health-care workers to access treatment and care services and to family and community members to gain various forms of support. The reasons for disclosure or non-disclosure are shaped by the relationships, needs and circumstances of people living with HIV (PLHIV) at the time of disclosure. The purpose of this study was to investigate and describe the act and experience of disclosure in order to understand how these experiences of disclosure impact on t

Awakening from the listeriosis crisis: Food safety challenges, practices and governance in the food retail sector in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The recent listeriosis outbreak in South Africa brought food safety concerns to the fore in terms of both policy and practice. These concerns encompass both health and nutrition aspects, as well as the economy, because the food system in South Africa contributes significantly to economic growth and food security. However, the food sector is challenged with food safety risks, such as foodborne diseases, food fraud and a general lack of effective enforcement of regulation. The inability of government to effectively regulate the food sector is a contributing factor to increased food s

Predictive Modeling of Localized Mobile App to Improve Snakebite Management in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming (SBE) is a significant yet often overlooked public health crisis that primarily affects impoverished communities. Mobile applications (apps) can be effective tools for managing snakebites. To meet the World Health Organization's (WHO) goal of reducing SBE by 50% by 2030, app developers must consider regional users' preferences to ensure their apps provide relevant and accurate information. This study predicted the importance of various functionalities of a mobile app for managing snakebites based on user preferences. Our objective was to provide quantitative ev
