Food allergens are capable of producing adverse reactions through multiple mechanisms of an allergic or non-allergic nature, and through different routes of exposure; generally by ingestion or contact, as in protein contact dermatitis or contact urticaria, including inhalation. Food allergy reactions, in turn, can be mediated by immediate hypersensitivity mechanisms, delayed hypersensitivity or mixed immediate-delayed mechanisms. The reference diagnostic method in food allergy is the double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge test (DBPCFC), but skin and serological tests are important in t

Although TH1, TH2, and TH17 cells are well-defined TH cell lineages in humans, it remains debated whether IL-9-producing TH cells represent a bona fide "TH9" lineage. Our understanding of the cellular characteristics and functions of IL-9-producing TH cells in humans is still nascent. Here, we report that human IL-9-producing TH cells express the chemokine receptors CCR4 and CCR8, produce high levels of IL-5 and IL-13, and express TH2 lineage-associated transcription factors. In these cells, IL-9 production is activation dependent, transient, and accompanied by down-regulation of TH2 cytokines

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common inflammatory skin condition. The etiology is unclear, although overgrowth of Malassezia on the skin has been suggested to cause SD. This study investigated whether colonization with Staphylococcus plays a role in facial SD, which was not well addressed previously.
METHODS: The study was conducted from September 1, 2011 to February 20, 2012 in the First Hospital of China Medical University. In the first phase, the study evaluated the level of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and the number of colony-forming units (CFU) of Staphylococcus in def

BACKGROUND: Temporary tattoos made with an extract of the jagua fruit (Genipa americana L.) are becoming increasingly popular. It is claimed that it is 'dermatologically tested' and does not contain p-phenylenediamine. Extracts of jagua and gardenia fruits have been used by indigenous people in South America, as well as in traditional Chinese medicine, for centuries. Genipin is currently used for its cross-linking effect in the manufacture of polysaccharides, and is being investigated for its anti-inflammatory and other properties.
OBJECTIVES: To report the presence of the allergenic substanc

UNLABELLED: Temporary henna tattoos have become increasingly popular as a safe alternative to permanent tattoos among American and European children and teenagers during the summer holidays. Currently, temporary henna tattoos contain not only henna, but also other additives such as para-phemylenediamine (PPD), which is considered to be the chemical agent that most frequently causes skin reactions associated with the use of commercial black henna. In this report, we describe an 11-year-old boy who applied a temporary black henna tattoo on his right arm during the summer holidays in Greece and d

Out of a total of 2,666 new dermatology patients, 128 (4.8%) were clinically diagnosed as allergic contact dermatitis. Of these, 107 (4%) reacted positively to different antigens in the patch-test. The commonest contact sensitizers among females were nickel and dyes. Among male patients, the commonest sensitizers were mecaptobenzol-thiazole, chrome and nickel. The incidence of occupational contact dermatitis among bricklayers, construction workers and builders were found to be low and the sensitization rate against chromate was 0.6%. There was no sensitization against cobalt and nickel in the

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), are characterized by an aberrant immune responses that leads to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. Traditional treatments, such as immunosuppressive drugs, only provide symptomatic relief and often cause significant side effects. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP), a form of nonthermal plasma, has emerged as a potential therapeutic tool, offering antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-modulatory effects.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to explore the mechanisms of CAP, its application in autoimmune diseases, and its poten

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between different types of heating and the prevalence of atopic diseases, skin test reactivity, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
DESIGN: Cross sectional survey among school-children aged 9-11 years. Skin prick tests, pulmonary function tests, and bronchial challenge in the children and self completion of a written questionnaire by the children's parents.
SUBJECTS: 1958 children in a rural area in southern Bavaria, Germany.

This study was based on a sample of 1,831 farmers with no symptoms of the lower respiratory tract, which was taken from a larger survey population of 12,056 farmers. Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were determined cross-sectionally in connection with health examinations at local health centres. Background data, which included age, sex, height, presence of atopic symptoms, and smoking habits, were gathered in a postal survey conducted by the Social Insurance Institution of Finland. Mean FEV1 and mean FVC were adjusted for age, sex, and height; FEV1

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis is a common occupational skin disease among healthcare workers (HCWs).
AIMS: This study describes causes of allergic contact dermatitis in New Zealand HCWs.
METHODS: All HCWs undergoing patch testing between July 2008 and January 2020 at a public hospital patch test clinic and between June 2019 and January 2020 at a private dermatology clinic were included. Data collected included patient demographics, occupation, results of patch testing and pre- and post-patch test diagnoses.
RESULTS: Out of 837 patients tested, 67 were HCWs. The mean age of HCWs wa
