The function of the normal hearing organ; as reflected in electrophysiological recordings from the auditory nerve, is characterised by high sensitivity, fine frequency selectivity (tuning), and the presence of non-linearities. These characteristics are already manifest prior to the neural responses, however, and have now been observed in the mechanics of the cochlea in recordings from the organ itself. Cochlear mechanics are linked to the vulnerable 'cochlear amplifier' and the motile capacity of the sensory outer hair cells. Exposure to intense sound or ototoxic drugs may damage the outer hai

UNLABELLED: After unilateral labyrinthectomy or vestibular neurectomy, optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN) to the ipsilateral side was abolished, then gradually recovered. We studied whether the compensation could be evaluated by observing OKAN.
METHODS: Unilateral labyrinthectomy or vestibular neurectomy was performed under general anesthesia in cases of severe inner ear origin vertigo. Eye movements were recorded by electronystagmography (ENG), and the duration of OKAN was measured.
RESULTS: The duration of OKAN to the ipsilateral side was shorter than that to the contralateral side (85%),

A study was devised to determine whether or not any immune defense mechanism is present when a virus invades the human endolymphatic sac (ES). The ES was removed from 14 fresh autopsy cases having no known pre-mortem diseases in the middle and inner ears. Specimens were then examined for viral antigens including herpes simplex (HSV) type 1 and 2, mumps and cytomegalovirus using immunohistochemical methods. DNA examination by in situ hybridization was also performed for HSV. HSV antigen and DNA were observed in 9 of the 14 cases studied. These findings suggest that the virus invades the ES but

The development of melanoblasts in normally pigmented and dominant spotting (W) embryos was followed by in situ hybridisation to TRP-2/DT mRNA, which labels migratory melanoblasts from 10 days post coitum. Numerous melanoblasts migrate to the inner ear around 11 days. In contrast, few migratory melanoblasts are associated with the eye or skin at this stage and melanoblasts distribution within the trunk and tail is patchy. The distribution of melanoblasts in 10.5-11-day-old Wv/Wv, Wsh/Wsh and W41/W41 mutants was similar to that in controls but melanoblasts density was lower and by 12 days was s

MRI of the head was performed in 25 patients suffering from Wegener's granuloma. 23 patients showed evidence of mucosal thickening in the paranasal sinuses, the middle and inner ears and in the mastoid cells; these were characterised by low signal intensity of T1-weighted and high signal intensity of T2-weighted images. In 10 patients there were granulomas in the paranasal sinuses and in the orbits which showed low signal intensity of both T1-weighted and T2-weighted images. In 4 patients, additional images were obtained after the intravenous injection of Gd-DTPA. In 2 patients this resulted i

The projection of individual inner ear maculae of the catfish, Ancistrus spec. were labelled with horseradish peroxidases (HRP) or fluorescent dextran amines. In ostariophysans, fibres which innervate epithelia known or assumed to be sensitive to the pressure component of aquatic sound, i.e. acoustic fibres which come from the sacculus and lagena, have projections separate from those of the utriculus and canal organs. In Ancistrus afferents of sacculus and lagena terminate in an area which is distinct based on its cytoarchitecture. This area, previously believed to be a secondary auditory nucl

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a rare disorder that might be caused by an hereditary defect in the G protein system. These membrane-bound proteins are responsible for the transduction of biological signals through the outer cell membrane. The investigation of 22 patients with PHP showed a symmetric sensorineural hearing loss in 63.6% of the subjects. In erythrocyte membrane preparations from blood samples of 15 of these patients, we measured the concentration of the stimulatory Gs protein and the inhibitory Gi protein by means of the Western blot analysis using selective antibodies against

Histological and morphometrical investigations of the vestibular nerve were performed on surgical specimens from 19 patients suffering from Ménière's disease and on 5 autopsy preparations from patients without inner ear disease. The number of lipofuscin granules and vacuoles in the ganglion cells of specimens from Ménière patients was not increased compared with control specimens of a similar age, nor did the amount of endoneuronal connective tissue in the vestibular nerve specimens differ between the two groups. The density of capillaries in Scarpa's ganglion and vestibular nerve was signific

The possibilities of MR and CT were compared in respect of neurinomas of the acoustic nerve (n. acusticus). The comparison showed that MR detection of tumours in the posterior of the cranial cavity is the more sensitive method, especially in respect of neurinomas of the acoustic nerve, although CT enables the use of the small-level technique with or without the addition of a contrast substance, as well as the application of pneumocisternography. The sensitivity of MR can be increased further by adding a contrast medium. Whereas in diagnosis of extrameatal neurinomas of the n. acusticus, CT and

Data are given on 2,515 patients who attended the Dizziness Unit on 3,113 visits. The sex incidence was 58% female, 42% male, and the sex preference most marked in the psychogenic group from ages 20 to 50. Dizziness is mainly a condition of middle-age; with a steadily aging population we can expect a disproportionate increase in patients with dizziness. Psychogenic dizziness was the commonest of all diagnoses (21.1%), followed closely by "undiagnosed"; together, these two comprised 40% of all diagnoses. Obviously, they deserve more clinical attention than such relatively rare conditions as del

Torticollis can arise from nonocular (usually musculoskeletal) and ocular conditions. Abnormal head position for ocular reasons is usually assumed in order to maintain binocularity and/or to optimize visual acuity. A variety of conditions may be responsible. The sensory organ of position sense, the labyrinth, lies within the inner ear and it relates to eye movement in both a dynamic and static fashion. The Bielschowsky head tilt test is based on the functioning of the otolithic apparatus and is the primary test in evaluating abnormal head position. Treatment is usually surgical, with extent an

Non-collagen proteins extracted from the otosclerotic stapes footplate, superstructure and temporal cortical bone were compared with the protein patterns of normal and otosclerotic perilymph by analytical isotachophoresis (ITP). Normal and otosclerotic perilymph yielded basically identical isotachophoretic subfractions. Thirteen subfractions were detected moving as anions at pH 9.6 in the normal perilymph, versus 16 subfractions of similar character in the otosclerotic perilymph. Of these 16 protein subfractions, one (which was not detected in the normal perilymph) could be found in the ITP-gr

Sudden, permanent hearing loss developed in three young patients. In an attempt to determine a viral etiology, their humoral and cell-mediated responses to a panel of seven viruses linked to deafness and altered immunity were measured. Although a specific viral cause was not determined, a mild Epstein-Barr virus infection was documented for each patient. It had preceded their hearing loss onset by 1 to 4 months. Evidence of altered cell-mediated responses to Epstein-Barr virus antigens was found in each patient. It is proposed that, in certain susceptible individuals, a temporary cellular immu

A 6-month-old Japanese boy with trisomy 17p, resulting from a paternal balanced translocation t(5;17)(p15;p11), is described. Comparison of his clinical features with those of two previously reported patients with trisomy 17p revealed a characteristic combination of clinical features. They included intra- and extra-uterine growth retardation, developmental retardation, microcephaly, internal hydrocephalus, a facies with lateral displacement of the inner canthi, antimongoloid slanting of the palpebral fissures, a broad nasal bridge, and micrognathism, low-set, large and simple ears, a short and

We report a series of unusual clinical cases which exhibit what we have referred to as unexplained conductive hearing loss. Audiometrically, these cases typically display mild to moderate conductive or mixed-type hearing loss and good word discrimination (80% to 100%). The otologic evaluations also lend support to the audiometric findings. When polytome roentgenograms were obtained thr results showed a normal inner ear system. Most often, the otologists' clinical impression was a fixed malleus or congenital stapes fixation, and exploratory tympanotomy with inspection of the ossicular chain was

This is a report of the hearing in 22 consecutive children seen in an audiology clinic because of intrauterine infection with rubella-virus. The diagnosis of congenital rubella may be difficult and sometimes impossible to make retrospectively. It is often a probability diagnosis made by a combination of laboratory tests and various deformities in the heart, the central nervous system, the eyes, and the inner ear. Audiometrically the findings are very much differentiated, and there is no typical configuration. The results reported in a scientific paper from USA mentioning a relatively good high

INTRODUCTION: Improvements of surgical visualization add value to the quality of clinical routine and offer the opportunity to improve surgical education of medical staff. The aim of this study was to determine whether otorhinolaryngology trainees gain additional comprehension of the anatomical structures and the surgical site when 3D visualization is used.
METHODS: Data were collected from ENT trainees of microsurgical courses of the middle ear, inner ear and lateral skull base at four university ENT departments (Charité (Berlin), Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Halle/Saale), Ludw…

Perilymphatic fistula (PLF) is defined as an abnormal communication between the fluid (perilymph)-filled space of the inner ear and the air-filled space of the middle ear and mastoid, or cranial spaces. PLF is located in the round or oval window, fractured bony labyrinth, microfissures, anomalous footplate, and can occur after head trauma or barotrauma, chronic inflammation, or in otic capsule dehiscence. This clinical entity was initially proposed more than a century ago, yet it has remained a topic of controversy for more than 50 years. The difficulty of making a definitive diagnosis of PLF

Disequilibrium, ranging from lightheadedness to severe vertigo, is frequently of great concern to the patients with a variety of inner ear diseases, and may cause occupational and social disability. Vestibular nerve section may be considered when vestibular symptoms are resistant to medical therapy and associated with serviceable hearing in the involved ear. During the last century, numerous authors described several routes for intracranial section of the eighth nerve, such as lateral suboccipital craniotomy, middle cranial fossa approach, and retrolabyrinthine approach to the vestibular fossa

In 41 guinea pigs an experiment was conducted to determine the effect of kanamycin on ears with or without blockage of the cochlear aqueduct. In 24 animals the cochlear aqueduct was blocked on one side, and after 1 to 21 days, kanamycin (300 mg/kg) was given daily and subcutaneously until the pinna reflex began to decrease. The remaining animals were used for controls: exposure of and trauma to the aperture of the cochlear aqueduct and kanamycin administration (8), blockage of the cochlear aqueduct only (3 plus 17 previous cases), and kanamycin administration to normal animals (6). The surviva
