Transforming Care Through Co-Design: Developing Inclusive Caregiver-Centered Education in Healthcare.

Background: Family caregivers provide most (75-90%) of the essential unpaid care and support for individuals living with chronic conditions, disabilities, and age-related needs in the community, with about half performing medical tasks traditionally performed by professionals. Caregivers also assist with 15 to 35% of the care in congregate care settings. Yet despite their critical contributions to patient care, caregivers face stress, declining well-being, and insufficient recognition in healthcare systems. Addressing these challenges requires innovative, person-centered approaches to training

Improving alarm management to reduce alarm fatigue in critical care: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The excessive number of false alarms in the intensive care unit (ICU) environment constitutes a significant clinical issue, contributing to alarm fatigue among medical staff. Effective alarm management is crucial for reducing the incidence of false alarms and enhancing patient safety in the critical care setting. This study aimed to conduct a quantitative analysis of alarms generated by cardiac monitors, assess ICU staff attitudes toward the alarm system, and implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention designed to improve alarm management in an anaesthesiology and i

Barriers, beliefs, and biomedical prevention: a qualitative study of PrEP among justice-involved peripregnant women who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: Peripregnant women who use drugs and are involved in the criminal legal system (CLS) face elevated risks of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition due to overlapping vulnerabilities, including sexual violence, structural instability, and limited access to preventive healthcare. The unique needs of this population are routinely overlooked in both clinical practice and research. This qualitative study explores peripregnant women's perspectives on HIV risk, attitudes toward pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and opportunities for PrEP programming in jail settings and during preg

Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Higher Tobacco Pack-Years in Patients with Metabolic Comorbidities.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory dermatosis with substantial quality-of-life impact. HS frequently co-exists with obesity and metabolic comorbidities. Cigarette smoking is highly prevalent and has been linked to heightened inflammatory activity and impaired wound healing. The role of cumulative tobacco exposure (packyears) in relation to metabolic comorbidities in HS is less well defined. We therefore investigated whether lifetime pack-years relate to laboratory parameters and the presence of comorbidities in HS. Methods: We conducted a retrospecti

Barth syndrome: Natural history in infants and young children.

Barth syndrome (BTHS) is a rare X-linked mitochondrial disorder caused by pathogenic variants in TAFAZZIN. It is characterized by cardiomyopathy, neutropenia, growth delay, skeletal myopathy, and developmental concerns. Advances in genetic testing have enabled earlier diagnoses, creating opportunities to better define the natural history of disease in infancy and early childhood. We conducted a longitudinal, observational study of 21 male patients (ages 0-48 months) with genetically confirmed BTHS evaluated at the Barth Syndrome Interdisciplinary Clinic at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Data colle

AI-powered classification and network analysis for knowledge mapping in medicine: a century of neurosyphilis research.

BACKGROUND: Tracking the evolution of scientific knowledge is challenging due to the scale and complexity of the biomedical literature. Neurosyphilis is a clinically complex and historically stigmatized condition that remains difficult to diagnose and manage. Its underexplored literature offers an ideal test case to evaluate digital methods for mapping research trends and identifying knowledge gaps. We aim to assess how large language models (LLMs), network analysis, and interrupted time series analysis (ITSA) can be combined to automate literature classification and examine how knowledge of n

Nutrition and movement to improve quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis: the NUMOQUA study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) has long been considered as a degenerative disease of cartilage tissue resulting from bodily wear and tear. However, there is accumulating evidence that inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of OA. In knee OA, the most common form of OA, exercise therapy as an effective component of early treatment addresses functional deficits, pain and inflammation. Since inflammation is critical for the development and progress of OA, anti-inflammatory therapies must be combined strategically. In the course of the NUMOQUA project, an anti-inflammatory therapeutic

Analytical Prediction of the Spatiotemporal Distribution of Chemoattractants around Their Source: Theory and Application to Complement-Mediated Chemotaxis.

The ability of motile immune cells to detect and follow gradients of chemoattractant is critical to numerous vital functions, including their recruitment to sites of infection and-in emerging immunotherapeutic applications-to malignant tumors. Facilitated by a multitude of chemotactic receptors, the cells navigate a maze of stimuli to home in on their target. Distinct chemotactic processes direct this navigation at particular times and cell-target distances. The expedient coordination of this spatiotemporal hierarchy of chemotactic stages is the central element of a key paradigm of immunotaxis
