Functional Outcome of Pediatric Subtrochanteric Fractures Treated With a Titanium Elastic Nailing System (TENS) Versus Plating.

Introduction Uncertainty exists regarding the ideal course of therapy for subtrochanteric fractures in children of intermediate age. These f … study, 17 were female while 23 were male. Twenty patients received treatment with titanium elastic nails, and the remaining twenty received plating. The majority of the patients were males around 9.6 years of age on average in the plating group and 8.9 years in the nailing group. In comparison to 75% of participants in the plating group, 40% of patient …

The patient-related factors in revision procedures on tibia of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta treated with the Peter-Williams nail.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the patient-related factors that affect the revision rate for the tibia in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta treated with the Peter-Williams nail, and to explore the relationship between the risk factors and complications postsurgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the data of 211 patients (93 females (44.08%) and 118 males (55.92%)) with osteogenesis imperfecta treated with Peter-Williams. The factors affecting surgical revision were analysed by performing binary logistic regression. Then, a total of 211 patients with type III, type I or type IV OI were di

Quantitative Self-Assessment of Exposure to Solvents among Formal and Informal Nail Technicians in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Participatory research, including self-assessment of exposure (SAE), can engage study participants and reduce costs. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility and reliability of a SAE regime among nail technicians. The study was nested in a larger study, which included exposure assessment supervised by experts, i.e., controlled assessment of exposure (CAE). In the SAE approach, ten formal and ten informal nail technicians were verbally instructed to use a passive sampler and complete an activity sheet. Each participant conducted measurements on three consecutive days, wher

Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Computer-Assisted Navigation in a Patient with Nail-Patella Syndrome: A Case Report.

CASE: Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is a genetic disorder causing anatomical abnormalities about the knee, including significant patellar hypoplasia. We present a case of a patient with NPS and severe knee osteoarthritis undergoing computer-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Several intraoperative anatomical challenges were appreciated. Postoperatively, the patient developed arthrofibrosis requiring manipulation; however, his final outcome was favorable. CONCLUSION: Computer assistance may improve precision in patients with NPS undergoing TKA, but surgeons must be aware of the associated a

Modified nail folding approach: A novel strategy for the treatment of subungual glomus tumors-A case series study.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: The modified nail folding approach, a new surgical technique, has been shown to be safe and effective for the treatment of subungual glomus tumors, providing clinicians with a new treatment option for patients with this condition. ABSTRACT: Glomus tumors (GTs) are rare benign tumors that originate from the glomus body in the skin of the fingertips, toes, and nail beds. GTs are more prevalent in women than in men and can occur sporadically or as part of an inherited condition known as multiple GTs. The exact cause of GTs is unknown, but it is believed that mutations in th

Blood-Transfusion Risk Factors after Intramedullary Nailing for Extracapsular Femoral Neck Fracture in Elderly Patients.

BACKGROUND: Extracapsular femoral neck fractures (eFNF) are the third most common type of fracture in traumatology. Intramedullary nailing (IMN) is one of the most frequently used ortho-pedic treatments for eFNF. Blood loss is one of the main complications of this treatment. This study aimed to identify and evaluate the perioperative risk factors that lead to blood transfusion in frail patients with eFNF who undergo IMN. METHODS: From July 2020 to December 2020, 170 eFNF-affected patients who were treated with IMN were enrolled and divided into two groups according to blood transfusion: NBT (

Effect of Implant Linkage on Axial and Rotational Stiffness of Nail-Plate Constructs for Comminuted Distal Femoral Fractures.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of linking the intramedullary nail and the laterally applied locking plate to treat comminuted distal femur fractures and allow for immediate weight bearing. METHODS: Comminuted extra-articular distal femur fractures were created in 16 synthetic osteoporotic femurs and split into 2 groups: linked versus unlinked. In the linked construct, in addition to standard plate fixation and proximal locking of the nail, 2 nonthreaded locking bolts (prototypes) were placed through both the plate and the nail. In the unlinked construct, the same number of screws affixed

Orthoplastic management of distal tibia bone infection using Masquelet technique and PRECICE nail: A case report.

The orthoplastic treatment of post-traumatic bone infections is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach using both orthopedic and plastic surgery principles. Its primary goal is to achieve rapid control of the infection through aggressive debridement of the affected tissue, in order to perform a complete reconstruction of the limb. This allows both its salvage and restoration of function. We present a patient with septic non-union secondary to distal tibia fracture with a bone defect of 7 cm and severe soft tissue injury. The treatment was divided into three stages. First, the infect

Staged Approach to Tibial Nail Removal Poses Increased Risk for Infection in the Setting of Total Knee Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: While previous research has addressed conversion arthroplasty scenarios, there is limited data on outcomes of staged or concurrent removal of intramedullary (IM) nails during total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Our study aimed to explore the association between the timing of IM nail removal and the incidence of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), surgical site infection (SSI), manipulation under anesthesia (MUA), and aseptic revision at 90 days, 1 year, and 2 years after TKA when IM nail removal is performed in either a (1) staged or (2) concurrent manner. METHODS: We queried a natio…

The Trans-Achilles Approach for Plate Supplementation of Ankle Arthrodesis With an Existing Hindfoot Fusion Nail: A Case Report.

Tibiotalar arthrodesis revision surgeries are not uncommon. Several approaches have been described in the literature for ankle arthrodesis nonunions. In this article, we describe the posterior trans-Achilles approach, which ensures adequate surgical exposure while minimizing damage to the surrounding soft tissues. It provides a convenient method for utilizing bone grafts or substitutes and allows for the advantageous application of posterior plating. The possible complications of this approach are delayed wound healing, wound infection, injury to the sural nerve, and the potential need for a s

Cyclin D1 and PRAME expression in distinguishing melanoma in situ from benign melanocytic proliferation of the nail unit.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing benign lesion from early malignancy in melanocytic lesions of the nail unit still remains a diagnostic challenge, both clinically and histopathologically. While several immunohistochemistry (IHC) stainings have been suggested to help discriminate benign subungual melanocytic proliferation (SMP) and subungual melanoma in situ (MIS), the diagnostic utility of IHC staining for cyclin D1 and PRAME has not been thoroughly investigated in melanocytic lesions of nail unit. METHODS: This retrospective study included cases of benign SMP and subungual MIS confirmed by biopsy
