Contralateral corticothalamic projections from MI whisker cortex: potential route for modulating hemispheric interactions.

Rat whisking behavior is characterized by high amounts of bilateral coordination in which whisker movements on both sides of the face are linked. To elucidate the neural substrate that might mediate this bilateral coordination, neuronal tracers were used to characterize the bilateral distribution of corticothalamic projections from primary motor (MI) cortex. Some rats received tracers in the MI whisker region, whereas others received tracers in the MI forepaw region. The MI whisker region projects bilaterally to the anteromedial (AM), ventromedial (VM), and ventrolateral (VL) nuclei, and to pa

Serotonin modulation of the basal ganglia circuitry: therapeutic implication for Parkinson's disease and other motor disorders.

Several recent studies have emphasized a crucial role for the interactions between serotonergic and dopaminergic systems in movement control and the pathophysiology of basal ganglia. These observations are supported by anatomical evidence demonstrating large serotonergic innervation of all the basal ganglia nuclei. In fact, serotonergic terminals have been reported to make synaptic contacts with both substantia nigra dopamine-containing neurons and their terminal areas such as the striatum, the globus pallidus and the subthalamus. These brain areas contain a high concentration of serotonin (5-

Association fibre pathways of the brain: parallel observations from diffusion spectrum imaging and autoradiography.

Understanding the long association pathways that convey cortical connections is a critical step in exploring the anatomic substrates of cognition in health and disease. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is able to demonstrate fibre tracts non-invasively, but present approaches have been hampered by the inability to visualize fibres that have intersecting trajectories (crossing fibres), and by the lack of a detailed map of the origins, course and terminations of the white matter pathways. We therefore used diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) that has the ability to resolve crossing fibres at the scal

Autism: the first firm finding = underconnectivity?

In January 2005, J.R. Hughes and M. Melyn published an electroencephalographic study on autistic children and found 46% with seizures and also a relatively high prevalence of 20% with epileptiform discharges but without any clinical seizures (Clin EEG Neurosci 2005;36:15-20). Because the discharges have always been viewed as focal events and the clinical seizures as requiring spread, the conclusion from these data was that children with autism may have a deficiency of corticocortical fibers. Since that time many MRI and functional MRI studies have been published confirming that one of the firs

Contralateral suppression of distortion product otoacoustic emissions: effect of the primary frequency in Dpgrams.

The amplitude of the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) can be suppressed by presenting contralateral acoustic stimulation. To test the hypothesis that DPOAE contralateral suppression is influenced by the primary frequency in DPgrams, DPgrams were recorded at resolutions of 1, 8, and 17 pts/octave, in the absence and presence of contralateral broadband noise (BBN). Participants were 20 normal-hearing human adults. In DPgrams with higher frequency resolutions, DPOAE suppression at amplitude peaks in DPgrams (8 pts/octave: Mean = - 0.92 dB, SD = 0.71 for BBN at 60 dB SPL; 17

A structural basis for reading fluency: white matter defects in a genetic brain malformation.

BACKGROUND: Multiple lines of evidence have suggested that developmental dyslexia may be associated with abnormalities of neuronal migration or axonal connectivity. In patients with periventricular nodular heterotopia--a rare genetic brain malformation characterized by misplaced nodules of gray matter along the lateral ventricles--a specific and unexpected reading disability is present, despite normal intelligence. We sought to investigate the cognitive and structural brain bases of this phenomenon. METHODS: Ten adult subjects with heterotopia, 10 with dyslexia, and 10 normal controls were ev

Molecular development of corticospinal motor neuron circuitry.

The organization, function and evolution of the brain depends centrally on the precise development of a wide diversity of distinct neuronal subtypes. Furthermore, given the heterogeneity of neuronal subtypes within the CNS and the complexity of their connections, attempts to functionally repair circuitry will require a detailed understanding of the molecular controls over differentiation, connectivity and survival of specific lineages. Toward these goals, we recently identified developmentally regulated transcriptional programmes for specific lineages of long-distance neocortical projection ne

Relationship between axonal collateralization and neuronal degeneration in basal ganglia.

In this paper we evaluate the hypothesis of a possible link between the degree of axonal collateralization of neurons located within the different components of basal ganglia and the vulnerability of these neurons to neurodegenerative or neurotoxic events. Our results stemmed from single-cell labeling experiments in rodents and primates, immunohistochemical study of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal pathway in parkinsonian monkeys, and immunocytological analysis of the human striatum in normal individuals and in patients with Huntington's disease. Our results indicate that projection neurons with

Annotation: Tourette syndrome: a relentless drumbeat--driven by misguided brain oscillations.

OBJECTIVE: This annotation reviews recent evidence that points to the likely role of aberrant neural oscillations in the pathogenesis of Tourette syndrome (TS). METHODS: The available anatomic and electrophysiological findings in TS are reviewed in the context of an emerging picture of the crucial role that neural oscillations play in maintaining normal central nervous system (CNS) function. RESULTS: Neurons form behavior-dependent oscillating networks of various sizes and frequencies that bias input selection and facilitate synaptic plasticity, mechanisms that cooperatively support temporal

Activity-dependent slowing of conduction velocity in uninjured L4 C fibers increases after an L5 spinal nerve injury in the rat.

Growing evidence suggests that uninjured afferents may play an important role in neuropathic pain following nerve injury. The excitability of nociceptive neurons in the L4 spinal nerve appears to be enhanced following an injury to the adjacent L5 spinal nerve. In this study, we investigated whether the action-potential conduction properties of unlesioned, unmyelinated fibers are also altered. A teased-fiber technique was used to record from single C fibers from the L4 spinal nerve of the rat in vitro. Repeated electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve was used to investigate activity-dependen

Stimulation of the nucleus locus coeruleus/subcoeruleus suppresses visceromotor responses to colorectal distention in the rat.

The aim of the present study was to examine whether the nucleus locus coeruleus/subcoeruleus (LC/SC) modulates visceromotor function. In the present study, an electromyogram (EMG) of the external abdominal oblique muscle evoked by colorectal distention was measured as a visceromotor reflex response, and inhibitory effects of LC/SC stimulation were estimated by the decrease of EMG activity. Under halothane anesthesia (1% in air), graded colorectal distentions (30, 60 or 80 mmHg) were produced by inflating a balloon inside the descending colon and rectum. A bipolar EMG electrode was inserted int

Influence of the entorhinal cortex on accumbal and striatal dopaminergic responses in a latent inhibition paradigm.

The use of latent inhibition paradigms is one means of investigating the involvement of mesencephalic dopaminergic (DA) neurons in cognitive processes. We have shown recently that DA neurons reaching the core and the dorsomedial shell parts of the nucleus accumbens and the anterior part of the striatum are differentially involved in latent inhibition. In other respects, theoretical, behavioral and anatomo-functional data suggest that the entorhinal cortex (ENT) may control latent inhibition expression. In this study, using in vivo voltammetry in freely moving rats, we investigated the influenc

Synaptic dynamics mediate sensitivity to motion independent of stimulus details.

Humans and other animals generally perceive motion independently of the cues that define the moving object. To understand the underlying mechanisms of this generalization of stimulus attributes, we have examined the cellular properties of avian wide-field tectal neurons that are sensitive to a variety of moving stimuli but not to static stationary stimuli. This in vitro study showed phasic signal transfer at the retinotectal synapse and binary dendritic responses to synaptic inputs that interact in a mutually exclusive manner in the postsynaptic tectal neuron. A model of the tectal circuitry p

Neural correlates of song complexity in Bengalese finch high vocal center.

Auditory neurons in the songbird forebrain nucleus high vocal center HVC) show high selectivity to the temporal structure of bird's own song but the relationship between the degree of song complexity and neural selectivity is not known. We investigated the song temporal selectivity of HVC neurons by multi-unit recordings in seven male Bengalese finches with different song complexity. Results showed that HVC multi-units of the individuals with more complex songs responded strongly to each of the self-generated song elements but were relatively insensitive to the element order, while those with

Repulsion and attraction of axons by semaphorin3D are mediated by different neuropilins in vivo.

Class 3 semaphorins are known to repel and/or sometimes attract axons; however, their role in guiding developing axons in the CNS in vivo is still essentially unknown. We investigated the role of Semaphorin3D (Sema3D) in the formation of the early axon pathways in the zebrafish CNS. Morpholino knock-down shows that Sema3D is essential for the correct formation of two early axon pathways. Sema3D appears to guide axons of the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (nucMLF) by repulsion and modulation of fasciculation. In contrast, Sema3D appears to be attractive to telencephalic neurons t

Ultrastructural evidence for a direct excitatory pathway from the nucleus retroambiguus to lateral longissimus and quadratus lumborum motoneurons in the female golden hamster.

During mating, the female golden hamster displays a stereotyped specific receptive posture, characterized by lordosis of the back, elevation of the tail, and extension of the legs. Muscles involved in this posture are thought to be iliopsoas, cutaneus trunci, lateral longissimus (LL), and quadratus lumborum (QL). Lesion studies in rats suggest that mating behavior is controlled by the mesencephalic periaqueductal gray (PAG). The PAG does not project directly to the motoneurons innervating the muscles involved in mating, but is thought to make use of the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) as relay. Th

Sleep spindles: an overview.

Sleep spindles are a distinctive EEG phasic feature of NREM sleep and are prevalent during stage 2 as compared to slow wave sleep. While the neurophysiological mechanisms of spindle generation, that involves thalamic and corticothalamic networks, have been recently delineated and are briefly reviewed, their definitive functional meaning still remains to be elucidated. This review summarizes the present knowledge on visually scored and automatically detected spindles, as well as the literature on EEG power in the sigma band. Among the factors known to affect sleep spindles and sigma activity, t
