Preventive behaviors related to COVID-19 based on social cognitive integrative model constructs among medical students: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 outbreak in Iran has prompted the investigation of preventive behaviors in vulnerable and key groups. This descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study determined preventive behaviors for COVID-19 among medical students using an integrated social cognition model and identified influencing factors. RESULTS: The study of 650 medical students with a mean age of 24.37 ± 3.78 years showed that the total scores of the integrated social cognition model and COVID-19 prevention behaviors were at the medium level, 85.44 ± 8.70 out of 155 and 10.78 ± 1.99 out of 20 scores, re

Family history of alcohol use disorder and stress-reactivity.

BACKGROUND: Family history of alcohol use disorder (FHA) is posited to convey its risk on problematic drinking partly through how individuals react to stressful situations. Research thus far has found equivocal results, with some studies concluding that FHA is associated with heightened stress-reactivity and others finding FHA associated with blunted stress-reactivity. In addition, the preponderance of this research has been conducted using laboratory-based paradigms, raising questions about the ecological validity of the findings. The purpose of the current study was to further clarify the as

Mild features of partial PAX3 deletion in patients with prenatal Waardenburg syndrome: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is a group of autosomal dominant hereditary disorders characterized by auditory-pigmentary abnormalities. Haploinsufficiency of paired box 3 (PAX3) gene is one of the known pathogenic mechanisms. However, clinical phenotypes are difficult to predict precisely in fetuses harboring PAX3 haploinsufficiency. In this study, we report a family with a PAX3 deletion encompassing exons 1-4, in which clinical manifestations ranged from normal to mild abnormalities. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old woman (gravida 2, para 0) was referred to our prenatal center at 18

Parent-of-Origin Effects in Childhood Asthma at Seven Years of Age.

Childhood asthma is more common among children whose mothers have asthma than among those whose fathers have asthma. The reasons for this are unknown, and we hypothesize that genomic imprinting may partly explain this observation. Our aim is to assess parent-of-origin (PoO) effects on childhood asthma by analyzing SNP array genotype data from a large population-based cohort. To estimate PoO effects in parent-reported childhood asthma at 7 years of age, we fit a log-linear model implemented in the HAPLIN R package to SNP array genotype data from 915 mother-father-child case triads, 603 mother-c

Genetic analysis of a female patient with X-linked lymphoproliferative disease type 2: a case report.

BACKGROUND: X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome type 2 is a relatively rare primary immunodeficiency disease caused by mutations in XIAP. X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome type 2 typically occurs in male individuals, while female individuals are carriers of the pathogenic gene mutations. Furthermore, X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome type 2 has a complex clinical phenotype. We aimed to explore the pathogenesis of X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome type 2 through genetic testing of a family to provide a basis for clinical diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: The clinical data of a female

Early Embryo Development: What Does Daddy Do?

Infertility represents a major global health challenge, with male infertility accounting for a significant proportion of cases, yet its underlying causes remain elusive in many instances. Traditionally, spermatozoa were viewed merely as DNA carriers, with little consideration given to their role beyond fertilization. Recent research, however, is challenging this view, revealing that spermatozoa are far more than passive delivery vehicles. They carry a complex array of molecules, particularly RNAs, which actively influence fertilization, early embryo development, and the transmission of paterna

Impact of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) on sperm genome integrity: insights from a mouse model.

PURPOSE: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) poses a significant global health burden, with Mild TBI (mTBI) being the most prevalent form. TBI triggers activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which in turn affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis regulating oogenesis and spermatogenesis. In this study, we investigated the impact of mTBI on sperm genome integrity using a repetitive mTBI (r-mTBI) mouse model. METHODS: We assessed sperm telomere length (TL), free TERRA (fTERRA), and DNA/RNA hybrid TERRA (hTERRA) levels, alongside transcriptional changes in genes involv

mRNA-1273 is placenta-permeable and immunogenic in the fetus.

COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are generally recognized as safe for gestational administration. However, their transplacental pharmacokinetics remain obscure. In this study, mRNA-1273 intramuscularly given to pregnant mice rapidly circulated in maternal blood and crossed the placenta within 1 h to spread in the fetal circulation. Although spike mRNA in fetal circulation faded away within 4-6 h, it could accumulate in fetal tissues, mainly the liver and get translated into spike protein. Transplacental mRNA-1273 proved immunogenic in the fetuses, as postnatally equipped with anti-spike immunoglobulin (

Frequent De Novo Mutations in Korean Patients With Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: De novo mutations provide a fundamental source of gene pool changes, driving genomic microevolution. Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), which is a group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous peripheral neuropathic disorders, is characterized by progressive muscle weakness, hand and foot deformities, and occasional involvement of other organs. This study conducted the first cohort study of de novo mutations in CMT patients. METHODS: De novo mutations were examined in 151 genetically diagnosed father-mother-child trio autosomal dominant CMT families except for CMT1A.

Child maltreatment typologies within intergenerational contexts: A latent class study.

OBJECTIVE: Child maltreatment (CM) in one generation can predict CM in the next, a concept known as the intergenerational continuity of CM. However, the specific forms of intergenerational CM remain unclear, and fathers are largely absent from this body of literature. This study examined second-generation CM typologies in families where intergenerational continuity was present and assessed the impact of parental CM on these typologies using multilevel latent class analyses. METHOD: Child protection data from families with confirmed intergenerational CM in Montreal were analyzed (n = 5,861 chi

A Neonate with FNAIT Supported by Placental Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis and Confounded by Maternal Preeclampsia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) occurs in the setting of maternal anti-human platelet antigen (anti-HPA) antibodies against paternally derived fetal platelet antigens. Recent studies have also demonstrated an association between chronic placental inflammation and FNAIT, specifically low-grade chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI). We present a neonate with profound thrombocytopenia after delivery with co-occurring CHI, whose platelet counts recovered rapidly with platelet transfusions, born to a primigravida mother with late-onset preeclampsia. Identification of a novel splice variant in SEC23B gene in a patient with concomitant presence of congenital dyserythropoietic anemia II and Gilbert's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia Ⅱ (CDA Ⅱ) is a rare inherited disorder of defective erythropoiesis caused by SEC23B gene mutation. CDA Ⅱ is often misdiagnosed as a more common type of clinically related anemia, or it remains undiagnosed due to phenotypic variability caused by the coexistence of inherited liver diseases, including Gilbert's syndrome (GS) and hereditary hemochromatosis. METHODS: We describe the case of a boy with genetically undetermined severe hemolytic anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, and gallstones whose diagnosis was achieved by targeted next generation sequencin
