Programmable Magnetic Soft Robots via Assembled Magnetization and Joint-Mediated Symmetry Breaking.

Magnetically actuated soft robots enable untethered operation in confined and complex environments; however, achieving controllable directional locomotion in structurally symmetric systems remains a fundamental challenge due to intrinsic force cancellation under uniform fields. Here, we present a modular strategy that integrates assembled programmable magnetization with energy-biased symmetry-breaking joints to overcome this limitation. By embedding hard-magnetic NdFeB microparticles into an Ecoflex matrix, discrete magnetic units with programmable magnetization are fabricated and assembled in

One-Lung Ventilation Duration Is a Risk Factor for Pneumonia in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Esophagectomy.

Introduction: Postoperative pulmonary complications, particularly pneumonia, remain frequent after esophagectomy and contribute significantly to morbidity. One-lung ventilation (OLV) is a potential modifiable risk factor, but its impact in minimally invasive (MIE) and robot-assisted Ivor Lewis esophagectomy (RAMIE) within European populations is not well defined. Methods: 619 patients undergoing MIE or RAMIE were analyzed. OLV duration was extracted from operative records. Postoperative pneumonia incidence, overall survival, and perioperative outcomes were assessed. ASA classification and othe

What Is the Effect of Robot Reduction in Displaced Pelvic Fractures? A Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Displaced pelvic fractures present real surgical challenges because of complex three-dimensional deformity patterns and proximity to vital structures, with conventional manual reduction techniques limited by accuracy constraints and radiation exposure. Although robotic assistance shows promise in preclinical studies, its clinical effectiveness remains unproven in randomized clinical trials (RCTs). QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Does robotic closed reduction improve reduction quality compared with manual closed reduction in displaced pelvic fractures? (2) Can robotic closed reduction redu

An Online Bimanual EEG-MI-BCI With Shared Control for Bilateral Robotic-Assisted Training.

Bimanual motor tasks are commonplace in daily life and are often integrated into rehabilitation therapies. However, previous brain-computer interface (BCI) for robotic-assisted rehabilitation predominantly focused on motor imagery (MI) of single limb. Moreover, the BCI-driven robotic system has been plagued due to the difficulty of decoding electroencephalography (EEG) accurately and robustly. In this study, we presented a novel EEG-MI-BCI system for online bilateral robot-assisted training, consisting of: 1) a bimanual EEG-MI paradigm involving the imagination of three coordinated movement di

ARport: an augmented reality system for markerless image-guided port placement in robotic surgery.

PURPOSE: Precise port placement is a critical step in robot-assisted surgery, where port configuration influences both visual access to the operative field and instrument maneuverability. To bridge the gap between preoperative planning and intraoperative execution, we present ARport, an augmented reality (AR) system that automatically maps pre-planned trocar layouts onto the patient's body surface , providing intuitive spatial guidance during surgical preparation. METHODS: ARport, implemented on an optical see-through head-mounted display (OST-HMD), operates without any external sensors or ma

Robotic-Assisted Total Hip Arthroplasty: Implications for Surgical Practice and Operating Theatre Design.

The introduction of robotic-assisted total hip arthroplasty (THA) has had significant effects over and above the more accurate component position it delivers. Diagnosis and templating are improved as a result of the planning CT scan. Complex cases involving abnormal anatomy are simplified surgically by a single ream for the acetabular component and feedback for hip length and offset for the femoral component. The learning curve for surgeons relates primarily to operative time rather than complications. Once planned, robotic systems may reduce variability in component positioning between surgeo

A Highly Permeable and Three-Dimensional Integrated Electronic System for Wearable Human-Robot Interaction.

Permeable electronics promise improved physiological comfort, but remain constrained by limited functional integration and poor mechanical robustness. Here, we report a three-dimensional (3D) permeable electronic system that overcomes these challenges by combining electrospun SEBS nanofiber mats, high-resolution liquid metal conductors patterned via thermal imprinting (50 μm), and a strain isolators (SIL) that protects vertical interconnects (VIAs) from stress concentration. This architecture achieves ultrahigh air permeability (> 5.09 mL cm-2 min-1), exceptional stretchability (750% fracture

Personalized Robotic Lumbar Rehabilitation Based on Medical-Imaging-Assisted Musculoskeletal Biomechanical Modeling.

Low back pain often involves paraspinal muscle degeneration. Rehabilitation robots can provide high-consistency exercise therapy, but current technologies face the challenge of delivering personalized training to patients with various muscular conditions. To solve the issue, this work proposes an automated framework that translates sparse clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans into personalized robotic lumbar rehabilitation strategies. First, a Bayesian fusion method with adaptive observation confidence is proposed to enable automatic posterior inference of the 3D paraspinal muscle ge

Magnetic Joint-Mediated Assembly of Optically Actuated Soft Robots with Adaptable Modal Switching.

Soft robots based on optically responsive smart materials have attracted extensive research interest for their unique capabilities. However, achieving adaptive, multifunctional mode switching remains challenging. Inspired by wrist rotation, considering the high response speed, miniaturization, and discrete programmability of magnetic actuators, we designed magnetic joints with different magnetization profiles. An assembly method was further proposed, utilizing magnetic actuator materials as joints and optical actuator materials as the skeleton. This approach enables functional synergy while re
