A 30-Year-Old Man with a Recent History of COVID-19 Requiring Treatment with Corticosteroids Who Developed Bilateral Central Serous Chorioretinopathy During 7-Month Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) involves a localized serous macular detachment, secondary to retinal pigment epithelial and choroidal vascular changes, which can be an adverse effect of corticosteroid use. Most CSCR cases resolve spontaneously, and normal vision returns, while some chronic cases can result in blindness. This report is of a 30-year-old man with a recent history of Corona virus disease (COVID)-19 requiring corticosteroid treatment who developed bilateral CSCR with unilateral fibrin and a 7-month follow-up. CASE REPORT A 30-year-old male patient presented with

Elevated perioptic lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase concentration in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

The pathophysiology of vision loss and loss of visual field in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension with papilloedema is not fully understood. Although elevated CSF pressure induces damage to the optic nerve due to stasis of axoplasmic flow, there is no clear relationship between the severity of papilloedema and CSF pressure. Furthermore, there are cases of purely unilateral papilloedema and cases without papilloedema despite significantly elevated intracranial pressure as well as papilloedema that can persist despite a successfully lowered intracranial pressure. We hypothesize t

Conjunctival Infiltration in a Child as a Rare Manifestation of IgG4-Related Disease.

PURPOSE: Ocular manifestations of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease are common in children although remain ill-defined because of the disease's rarity. We describe a pediatric case of IgG4-related orbital disease (IgG4-ROD) who presented with persistent conjunctival infiltration before developing lacrimal gland enlargement 3 years later. METHODS: This was a case report. RESULTS: An 8-year-old girl developed forniceal salmon-patch-like conjunctival lesions in her left eye that were refractory to topical corticosteroids. Investigations, including an orbital MRI and 2 conjunctival biopsi

Convolutional Neural Network Based Real Time Arabic Speech Recognition to Arabic Braille for Hearing and Visually Impaired.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a group of theoretically inspired computer structures for analyzing and modeling clearly going on texts at one or extra degrees of linguistic evaluation to acquire human-like language processing for quite a few activities and applications. Hearing and visually impaired people are unable to see entirely or have very low vision, as well as being unable to hear completely or having a hard time hearing. It is difficult to get information since both hearing and vision, which are crucial organs for receiving information, are harmed. Hearing and visually impaired

Adamts10 controls transforming growth factor β family signaling that contributes to retinal ganglion cell development.

Although mutations in ADAMTS10 have long been known to cause autosomal recessive Weill-Marchesani Syndrome which is characterized by short stature and ocular abnormalities, more recent work has shown that certain mutations in ADAMTS10 cause glaucoma in dogs. In humans, glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss that affects tens of millions of people world-wide. Vision loss in glaucoma is a result of neurodegeneration of retinal ganglion cells that form the inner-most layer of the retina and whose axons form the optic nerve which relays visual information to the brain. ADAMTS10

Diabetic Retinopathy Screening with Automated Retinal Image Analysis in a Primary Care Setting Improves Adherence to Ophthalmic Care.

PURPOSE: Retinal screening examinations can prevent vision loss resulting from diabetes but are costly and highly underused. We hypothesized that artificial intelligence-assisted nonmydriatic point-of-care screening administered during primary care visits would increase the adherence to recommendations for follow-up eye care in patients with diabetes. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: Adults 18 years of age or older with a clinical diagnosis of diabetes being cared for in a metropolitan primary care practice for low-income patients. METHODS: All participants underwent nonmydri

Laparoscopic Glissonean Pedicle Transection (Takasaki) for Negative Fluorescent Counterstaining of Segment 6.

BACKGROUND: The portal pedicles are wrapped in connective tissue known as the Walaeus sheath, which abut Laennec's capsule covering the liver parenchyma. Precise knowledge of this anatomic relationship allows for dissection of this interspace and early control of the segmental portal pedicle (Glissonean pedicle transection method [GPTM], Takasaki approach). 1,2 Subsequent systemic administration of indocyanine green (ICG) leads to negative counterstaining of the segment to be resected. PATIENT: The patient was a 60-year-old healthy woman with invasive lobular breast cancer, grade 2, which was

Relationship of in vitro susceptibility to moxifloxacin and in vivo clinical outcome in bacterial keratitis.

BACKGROUND: For bacterial infections, the susceptibility to antibiotics in vitro has been associated with clinical outcomes in vivo, although the importance of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) has been debated. In this study, we analyzed the association of MIC on clinical outcomes in bacterial corneal ulcers, while controlling for organism and severity of disease at presentation. METHODS: Data were collected as part of a National Eye Institute-funded, randomized, controlled trial (the Steroids for Corneal Ulcers Trial [SCUT]). All cases enrolled in SCUT had a culture-positive bacterial

Collision judgment when using an augmented-vision head-mounted display device.

PURPOSE: A device was developed to provide an expanded visual field to patients with tunnel vision by superimposing minified edge images of the wide scene, in which objects appear closer to the heading direction than they really are. Experiments were conducted in a virtual environment to determine whether users would overestimate collision risks. METHODS: Given simulated scenes of walking or standing with intention to walk toward a given direction (intended walking) in a shopping mall corridor, participants (12 normally sighted and 7 with tunnel vision) reported whether they would collide wit

Effects of visual deprivation on intra-limb coordination during walking in children and adults.

Following the laws of planar covariation, intersegmental coordination is defined with respect to the vertical and heading direction. This vertical reference can be estimated using multisensory information, amongst others visual cues play a role. In the past it was already shown that visual deprivation and/or perturbation of visual information largely affect gait kinematics. The goal of this study is to investigate the impact of visual deprivation on intra-limb movement coordination. Children aged between 3 and 11 years and young adults are included in this study to investigate age-related diff

Motion sickness during fore-and-aft oscillation: effect of the visual scene.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive braking and acceleration can cause carsickness, with the extent of sickness depending on the forward view outside the car. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that the visual scene would influence motion sickness caused by low-frequency, low-magnitude fore-and-aft oscillation in the laboratory. METHOD: There were 120 seated male subjects who were exposed to 30 min of 0.1-Hz fore-and-aft oscillation at an acceleration magnitude of 0.89 m x s(-2) rms (a displacement of +/- 3.18 m). Subjects sat in a cabin with one of six scenes: 1) an internal view of two-dimensional black s

Temporal Wedge Defects in Glaucoma: Structure/Function Correlation With Threshold Automated Perimetry of the Full Visual Field.

PRECIS: We used the Open Perimetry Interface (OPI) to design a static automated perimetry test of the full visual field. About half of our glaucoma cohort had defects in the far peripheral inferotemporal visual field that correlate well with related damage to the superior nasal optic disc. AIMS: To test the hypothesis that in glaucoma patients with mild visual loss, perimetric nerve fiber bundle defects present outside 30 degrees will correlate well with areas of Cirrus ocular coherence tomography (OCT) retinal nerve fiber layer thinning. METHODS: We tested 27 consecutive glaucoma subjects w
