Anterior forebrain pathway in parrots is necessary for producing learned vocalizations with individual signatures.

Parrots have enormous vocal imitation capacities and produce individually unique vocal signatures. Like songbirds, parrots have a nucleated neural song system with distinct anterior (AFP) and posterior forebrain pathways (PFP). To test if song systems of parrots and songbirds, which diverged over 50 million years ago, have a similar functional organization, we first established a neuroscience-compatible call-and-response behavioral paradigm to elicit learned contact calls in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Using variational autoencoder-based machine learning methods, we show that contac

Low Intensity Noise Exposure Enhanced Auditory Loudness and Temporal Processing by Increasing Excitability of DCN.

Sound stimulation is generally used for tinnitus and hyperacusis treatment. Recent studies found that long-term noise exposure can change synaptic and firing properties in the central auditory system, which will be detected by the acoustic startle reflex. However, the perceptual consequences of long-term low-intensity sound exposure are indistinct. This study will detect the effects of moderate-level noise exposure (83 dB SPL) on auditory loudness, and temporal processing was evaluated using CBA/CaJ mice. C-Fos staining was used to detect neural activity changes in the central auditory pathway

Study on a photoacoustic spectroscopy trichloromethane gas detection method based on an arched photoacoustic cavity.

As an important component in photoacoustic spectroscopy gas detection systems, the performance of the photoacoustic cavity directly affects the sensitivity and resolution of the system. Based on a study of photoacoustic cavity performance, a new type of arched photoacoustic cavity is proposed. Finite element simulation software is used for modeling. By comparing the influences of the position and radius of the central sphere, the length and radius of the resonant cavity, and the radius of the buffer chamber on the performance of the photoacoustic cavity, the optimal structural size of the arch

Reconstruction of vocal tract geometries from biomechanical simulations.

Medical imaging techniques are usually utilized to acquire the vocal tract geometry in 3D, which may then be used, eg, for acoustic/fluid simulation. As an alternative, such a geometry may also be acquired from a biomechanical simulation, which allows to alter the anatomy and/or articulation to study a variety of configurations. In a biomechanical model, each physical structure is described by its geometry and its properties (such as mass, stiffness, and muscles). In such a model, the vocal tract itself does not have an explicit representation, since it is a cavity rather than a physical struc

Modeling the Pathophysiology of Phonotraumatic Vocal Hyperfunction With a Triangular Glottal Model of the Vocal Folds.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to test prevailing assumptions about the underlying biomechanical and aeroacoustic mechanisms associated with phonotraumatic lesions of the vocal folds using a numerical lumped-element model of voice production. METHOD: A numerical model with a triangular glottis, posterior glottal opening, and arytenoid posturing is proposed. Normal voice is altered by introducing various prephonatory configurations. Potential compensatory mechanisms (increased subglottal pressure, muscle activation, and supraglottal constriction) are adjusted to restore an acoustic target output throug

Cepstral analysis of normal and pathological voice in Spanish adults. Smoothed cepstral peak prominence in sustained vowels versus connected speech.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: In recent years, the use of cepstral measures for acoustic evaluation of voice has increased. One of the most investigated parameters is smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPs). The objectives of this paper are to establish the usefulness of this acoustic measure in the objective evaluation of alterations of the voice in Spanish and to determine what type of voice sample (sustained vowels or connected speech) is the most sensitive in evaluating the severity of dysphonia. METHOD: Forty subjects participated in this study 40, 20 controls and 20 with dysphonia. Two

Contribution of the incudo-malleolar joint to middle-ear sound transmission.

The malleus and incus in the human middle ear are linked by the incudo-malleolar joint (IMJ). The mobility of the human IMJ under physiologically relevant acoustic stimulation and its functional role in middle-ear sound transmission are still debated. In this study, spatial stapes motions were measured during acoustic stimulation (0.25-8 kHz) in six fresh human temporal bones for two conditions of the IMJ: (1) normal IMJ and (2) IMJ with experimentally-reduced mobility. Stapes velocity was measured at multiple points on the footplate using a scanning laser Doppler vibrometry (SLDV) system, and

Treatment of cyanide containing wastewater using cavitation based approach.

Industrial wastewater streams containing high concentrations of biorefractory materials like cyanides should ideally be treated at source. In the present work, degradation of potassium ferrocyanide (K4Fe(CN)6) as a model pollutant has been investigated using cavitational reactors with possible intensification studies using different approaches. Effect of different operating parameters such as initial concentration, temperature and pH on the extent of degradation using acoustic cavitation has been investigated. For the case of hydrodynamic cavitation, flow characteristics of cavitating device (

[Cox regression model of hearing loss in workers exposed to noise and metalworking fluids or welding fumes].

BACKGROUND: Works on labour-related hearing loss have traditionally been centred on the study of noise as the principal cause. The presence of physical and chemical pollutants is very common in the metalworking branch. This article analyses both, together with certain personal habits, with the aim of determining their joint influence on labour-related hearing loss. METHODS: A sample of 558 workers was analysed using Cox regression with an explicative aim. The character of the cause-effect relations existing between the variables considered is defined with respect to three situations: healthy/

Effects of hyperbaric oxygen treatment on auditory hair cells after acute noise damage.

Acute acoustic trauma (AAT) is a sudden sensorineural hearing loss caused by exposure of the hearing organ to acoustic overstimulation, typically an intense sound impulse, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HOT), which favors repair of the microcirculation, can be potentially used to treat it. Hence, this study aimed to assess the effects of HOT on guinea pigs exposed to acoustic trauma. Fifteen guinea pigs were exposed to noise in the 4-kHz range with intensity of 110 dB sound level pressure for 72 h. They were assessed by brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) and by distortion product otoacoust

Cardiac modulation of startle: effects on eye blink and higher cognitive processing.

Cardiac cycle time has been shown to affect pre-attentive brainstem startle processes, such as the magnitude of acoustically evoked reflexive startle eye blinks. These effects were attributed to baro-afferent feedback mechanisms. However, it remains unclear whether cardiac cycle time plays a role in higher startle-related cognitive processes, as well. Twenty-five volunteers responded first by 'fast as possible' button pushes (reaction time, RT), and second, rated perceived intensity of 60 acoustic startle stimuli (85, 95, or 105 dB; 50 ms duration; binaural; instantaneous rise time), which wer

A longitudinal study of voice before and after phonosurgery for removal of a polyp.

The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the acoustic parameters, perceptual estimation, and self-estimation of voice before, 1 month after, and 6 years after surgical removal of a vocal fold polyp. Subjects were five male patients who came to the Phoniatric Clinic because of breathiness. For all patients, a polyp of one vocal fold was diagnosed. The operation was performed using cold instruments based on the principles of contemporary phonosurgery aiming maximally at preserving the phonatory bridge of the vocal fold. The subjects were recorded in a sound-proof booth three times: b

US of the major salivary glands: anatomy and spatial relationships, pathologic conditions, and pitfalls.

Ultrasonography (US) is useful for differential diagnosis of diseases of the salivary glands. In acute inflammation, salivary glands are enlarged and hypoechoic with increased blood flow; they may contain multiple small, oval, hypoechoic areas. In chronic inflammation, salivary glands are normal sized or smaller, hypoechoic, and inhomogeneous. Sialolithiasis appears as markedly hyperechoic lines or points with distal acoustic shadowing. Sialosis appears as enlarged hyperechoic glands without focal lesions or increased blood flow. The US features of advanced Sjögren syndrome include inhomogeneo

Auditory cortical tuning to statistical regularities in phonology.

OBJECTIVE: Ample behavioral evidence suggests that distributional properties of the language environment influence the processing of speech. Yet, how these characteristics are reflected in neural processes remains largely unknown. The present ERP study investigates neurophysiological correlates of phonotactic probability: the distributional frequency of phoneme combinations. METHODS: We employed an ERP measure indicative of experience-dependent auditory memory traces, the mismatch negativity (MMN). We presented pairs of non-words that differed by the degree of phonotactic probability in a mod

The synergy between speech production and perception.

Speech intelligibility is known to be relatively unaffected by certain deformations of the acoustic spectrum. These include translations, stretching or contracting dilations, and shearing of the spectrum (represented along the logarithmic frequency axis). It is argued here that such robustness reflects a synergy between vocal production and auditory perception. Thus, on the one hand, it is shown that these spectral distortions are produced by common and unavoidable variations among different speakers pertaining to the length, cross-sectional profile, and losses of their vocal tracts. On the ot

Learning to produce speech with an altered vocal tract: the role of auditory feedback.

Modifying the vocal tract alters a speaker's previously learned acoustic-articulatory relationship. This study investigated the contribution of auditory feedback to the process of adapting to vocal-tract modifications. Subjects said the word /tas/ while wearing a dental prosthesis that extended the length of their maxillary incisor teeth. The prosthesis affected /s/ productions and the subjects were asked to learn to produce "normal" /s/'s. They alternately received normal auditory feedback and noise that masked their natural feedback during productions. Acoustic analysis of the speakers' /s/

Asymmetry of the sphenoid bone and its suitability as a reference for analyzing craniofacial asymmetry.

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the asymmetry of the sphenoid bone and to determine its suitability as a reference for analyzing asymmetry of the skull. Thirty-seven dry skulls from India were divided into group A (n = 18), with a right-left length discrepancy of less than 2 mm for both the external acoustic meatus-frontozygomatic suture and external acoustic meatus-subspinale, and group B (n = 19), with a right-left length discrepancy of more than 2 mm for either of these 2 parameters. The skulls were then examined with regard to the percentage of asymmetry of the sphenoid bone, t
