OBJECTIVE: To determine cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) selectivity, pharmacokinetic properties, and in vivo efficacy of ML-1,785,713 in dogs.
ANIMALS: 21 healthy male and female mixed-breed dogs and 24 healthy male Beagles.

A new combination of the "rhizarian rider" phenomenon was observed in the sea area affected by the Kuroshio current, off Japan: a female of Brachyscelus crusculum (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Brachyscelidae) holding a colony of Odontosphaera sp. (Radiolaria, Collodaria, Collosphaeridae). The "rhizarian rider" phenomenon of Collosphaeridae and B. crusculum was first recorded. The large colony size (ca. 13 mm) and color (pale blue) of Odontosphaera sp. are also newly reported by this study. Brachyscelus crusculum presumably utilizes Odontosphaera sp. as a float, food source, and breeding bed.

The size and age structures for four assemblages of North American tyrannosaurs-Albertosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Gorgosaurus, and Daspletosaurus-reveal a pronounced, bootstrap-supported pattern of age-specific mortality characterized by relatively high juvenile survivorship and increased mortality at midlife and near the maximum life span. This study constitutes the first reported isolation of Trichomonas fetus from the uterus of breeding camels. Twenty-four of 68 camels, which were barren for 1-4 years were found to be positive for T. fetus. One preputial washing of a camel bull which had served the herd was found to be positive for T. fetus. The uterine flora of all camels were examined. Ten different bacterial and 2 fungal species were isolated. All samples were negative for Campylobacter sp., Taylorella equigenitalis and Streptococcus zooepidemicus.

Seven pregnant cows (gestation durations, 42 days to 7 months) were identified as culture-positive for Tritrichomonas foetus. For 6 of these pregnancies, 2 of the youngest fetuses were aborted, and calves were delivered by the other 4 cows. Two cows became carriers, maintaining trichomonad infections for 6 and 9 weeks after parturition. Carrier cows may be a source of reinfection for their herd mates. Hence, strategies for controlling trichomoniasis might include delaying the time of first breeding and aggressive culling of infected cows.

During a period of six years 7,555 bovine sera, 421 canine sera, 251 porcine sera and 135 equine sera were tested for agglutinins to Leptospira interrogans serotypes canicola, grippotyphosa, hardjo, icterohemorrhagiae, pomona and sejroe. The bovine sera reacted predominantly with hardjo and/or sejroe at a rate of 15% compared to 3.5% with pomona. Breeding or abortion problems were associated with pomona but not with sejroe/hardjo agglutinins. The canine sera reacted to canicola (9.9%y and icterohemorrhagiae (5.4%), tcted predominantly with canicola (8.9%) and icterohemorrhagiae (8.1%).

Cerebral cryptococcomas are described in a 5-year-old mixed-breed cow without manifestations of systemic cryptococcosis. Two cryptococcomas were observed grossly. Microscopical examination revealed accumulations of yeast that were morphologically consistent with Cryptococcus neoformans. Immunohistochemistry characterized the organisms as C. neoformans var. grubii.

Post-morten examination of a fourteen-year-old mare of the Gelderland breed, which had been treated for severe dyspnoea and had subsequenlty died, revealed the presence of haemothorax, atelectasis of the lung and a metastasized haemangiosarcoma of the left ovary.
