A large Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Pamplona, Spain: early detection, rapid control and no case fatality.

An outbreak of Legionnaire's disease was detected in Pamplona, Spain, on 1 June 2006. Patients with pneumonia were tested to detect Legionella pneumophila antigen in urine (Binax Now; Binax Inc., Scarborough, ME, USA), and all 146 confirmed cases were interviewed. The outbreak was related to district 2 (22 012 inhabitants), where 45% of the cases lived and 50% had visited; 5% lived in neighbouring districts. The highest incidence was found in the resident population of district 2 (3/1000 inhabitants), section 2 (14/1000). All 31 cooling towers of district 2 were analysed. L. pneumophila antige

Trends in prevalence of type 2 diabetes and intermediate hyperglycaemia in Mauritius from 1987 to 2021 based on results from the oral glucose tolerance test: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Data on national trends in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and intermediate hyperglycaemia using the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) are scarce. We aimed to identify trends in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and intermediate hyperglycaemia in Mauritius, a country that has monitored prevalence over 34 years using OGTT. METHODS: Non-communicable disease risk factor surveys using standardised protocols were conducted in the general population in 1987, 1992, 1998, 2004, 2009, 2015, and 2021 in Mauritius, with 36 744 survey attendances by adults aged 25-74 years examined. Burden, Regional Trends and Risk Factors of Breast, Cervical, Uterine, and Ovarian Cancers in Sub-Saharan Africa, 1990-2023: The Global Burden of Disease 2023.

Background: Sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing a rapid epidemiological transition marked by a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, including breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers, which constitute major causes of morbidity and mortality among women in the region; however, comprehensive assessments of long-term trends and regional heterogeneity remain limited. This study examines the burden and temporal trends of breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers across sub-Saharan Africa from 1990 to 2023. Methods: A retrospective ecological analysis was conducted using data from th

Early feasibility of telemedicine-based mental health wellbeing centers: an implementation study in district and sub-district health facilities in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders pose a critical burden globally, 400 million incident and 1.1 billion prevalent cases; and in Bangladesh, 10.38 million incident and 24.05 million prevalent cases in 2023. Despite the mental health burden in Bangladesh, the majority of the people (> 90%) do not receive required services, due to the concentration of service providers in big cities, leaving rural and marginalized people disproportionately affected. Therefore, to address these barriers, the Non-Communicable Disease Control (NCDC) programme established tele-mental health services in government f…

Efficacy and safety of novel formulation of semaglutide injection: A multicentre, randomized, comparative, active controlled, phase 3 study in comparison with reference biologic in Indian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common non-communicable disease affecting over 89.8 million adults in India. Evidence suggests long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist improves glycaemic control in the patients with T2DM. This phase 3 trial compared a novel semaglutide injection developed by Zydus Lifesciences Ltd. with the reference biologic in Indian adults with T2DM inadequately controlled on metformin. METHODS: In this multicentre, randomised study, 314 patients aged 18-65 years with HbA1c 7.0-10.5 % were randomised 1:1 to once-weekly semaglutid

Prevalence, trends and distribution of lifestyle cancer risk factors in Uganda: a 20-year systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is becoming an important public health problem in Uganda. Cancer control requires surveillance of lifestyle risk factors to inform targeted interventions. However, only one national Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) risk factor survey has been conducted in Uganda. This review assessed the prevalence, trends and distribution of lifestyle risk factors in Uganda. METHODS: The review identified studies up to January 2019 by searching Medline, Embase, CINAL and Cochrane databases. Further literature was identified from relevant websites and journals; scanning reference lists of rel

Comparison of verbal autopsy using a large language model to biologically confirmed causes of death for malaria and other communicable diseases among children in six sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: Malaria, a preventable parasitic disease, causes most child deaths in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Reliable cause-of-death data are essential to evaluate progress toward the national and global malaria control goals. However, civil registration and vital statistics are often weak and incomplete in many low- and middle-income countries. In such circumstances, verbal autopsy (VA) provides an alternative means of mortality surveillance. In some settings, VA has been paired with Minimally Invasive Tissue Sampling (MITS) to obtain detailed biological confirmation of the causes of death. He

Early life body mass index trajectories and albuminuria in midlife: A 30-year prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Albuminuria is a marker of vascular dysfunction and is associated with chronic renal and cardiovascular diseases. Data on the association between the longitudinal patterns of weight change early in life and albuminuria later in life are limited. We aimed to identify the body mass index (BMI) trajectory across a 30-year span and evaluate its association with middle-age albuminuria. METHODS: Of the 4623 participants aged 6-18-year-old recruited by Hanzhong Adolescent Hypertension Study cohort in northern China from March 10, 1987 to June 3, 2017, a total of 1,825 participants follow

Forty years later: adult health and non-communicable disease following the 1984-1985 Great Ethiopian Famine - a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: As the threat of child malnutrition increases, the focus remains mostly on short-term consequences. Long-term sequelae are increasingly recognised but lack strong evidence, and many studies face methodological limitations. METHOD: A retrospective cohort of survivors of the 1984-1985 Great-Ethiopian Famine was compared with two novel control groups: born post-famine; and age category- and sex-matched controls. Exposure to famine at different age categories was explored (fetal, 0-2, 2-5, 5-10 and 10-18 years). Follow-up was 40 years later. Outcomes included anthropometry, body compo

The role of community health workers in re-entry of people with HIV and substance use disorder released from jail: a mixed methods evaluation of a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated individuals face high rates of mental illness, substance use disorders and communicable diseases including HIV, with increased health complications and mortality in the early post-release period. Multiple re-entry interventions linking justice-involved individuals to community resources via peer navigation have emerged, though limited data exist on the mechanics and personal impact of these approaches. This paper quantifies and evaluates a pilot study of a combined Community Health Worker (CHW)-re-entry intervention for individuals released from jail who use substances

A systematic review and meta-analysis of school-based interventions with health education to reduce body mass index in adolescents aged 10 to 19 years.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are increasingly susceptible to obesity, and thus at risk of later non-communicable diseases, due to changes in food choices, physical activity levels and exposure to an obesogenic environment. This review aimed to synthesize the literature investigating the effectiveness of health education interventions delivered in school settings to prevent overweight and obesity and/ or reduce BMI in adolescents, and to explore the key features of effectiveness. METHODS: A systematic search of electronic databases including MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychINFO and ERIC for papers published

A delayed resurgence of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during the COVID-19 pandemic: An unpredictable outbreak in a small proportion of children in the Southwest of Iran, April 2022.

The global outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), an emerging disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and strict restrictions implemented to control the infection have impacted the circulation and transmission of common seasonal viruses worldwide and subsequently the rate of hospitalizations in children at young ages. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) surprisingly disappeared in 2020-2021 in many countries due to lockdown and precautions were taken because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Herein, we showed a notable change in the rate of hospitalization and

Gender differences in the perceived need for community-wide deworming: Formative qualitative research from the DeWorm3 study, India.

Current soil-transmitted helminth (STH) programs target morbidity control with school-based deworming. Increasing interest in steering neglected tropical disease (NTD) programmes from morbidity control towards disease elimination has prompted evaluation of strategies that may interrupt transmission. The feasibility of interrupting transmission of STH with community-wide deworming is being tested in the ongoing DeWorm3 cluster randomized trial. Gender-based perspectives about susceptibility to infection and need for treatment have been shown to influence both health-seeking behaviour and health
