Effect of Household Air Pollution and Neighbourhood Deprivation on the Risk of Acute Respiratory Infection Among Under-Five Children in Chad: A Multilevel Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to household air pollution (HAP) is one of the primary risk factors for acute lower respiratory infection (ARI) morbidity and mortality among children in low-income settings. This study aimed to examine the relative contribution of residing in deprived neighbourhoods and exposure to HAP on the occurrence of ARI among children using data from the 2014-2015 Chad Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). METHODS: We applied multilevel modelling techniques to survey data of 2882 children from 372 communities to compute the odds ratio (OR) for the occurrence of ARI between children

Mpox surveillance in endemic regions: a scoping review of trends, challenges, and recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Mpox continues to pose a significant public health threat in endemic regions of Africa, particularly with the emergence of new viral clades and continuous human-to-human transmission. This scoping review assesses existing Mpox surveillance systems in endemic parts of Africa, highlighting key trends, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Five electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) were searched in September 2025. Identifying adolescents at risk for suboptimal adherence to tuberculosis treatment: A prospective cohort study.

Adolescents account for an estimated 800,000 incident tuberculosis (TB) cases annually and are at risk for suboptimal adherence to TB treatment. Most studies of adolescent TB treatment adherence have used surveillance data with limited psychosocial information. This prospective cohort study aimed to identify risk factors for suboptimal adherence to rifampicin-susceptible TB treatment among adolescents (10-19 years old) in Lima, Peru. We collected psychosocial data using self-administered surveys and clinical data via medical record abstraction. Applying k-means cluster analysis, we grouped par

Opportunities and barriers for maternal nutrition behavior change: an in-depth qualitative analysis of pregnant women and their families in Uttar Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: Maternal undernutrition during pregnancy remains a critical public health issue in India. While evidence-based interventions exist, poor program implementation and limited uptake of behavior change interventions make addressing undernutrition complex. To address this challenge, Alive & Thrive implemented interventions to strengthen interpersonal counseling, micronutrient supplement provision, and community mobilization through the government antenatal care (ANC) platform in Uttar Pradesh, India. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aimed to: (1) examine pregnant women's experiences o

Are emojis ready to promote the WHO 5 moments for hand hygiene in healthcare?

BACKGROUND: Hand hygiene is universally recognized as a cornerstone measure for the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. Although the WHO "My five Moments for hand hygiene" poster has been used for more than a decade to delineate hand hygiene indications and promote action, adherence levels among healthcare workers are still notoriously low and disquieting. To compensate for the lack of effective hand hygiene communication, we aimed to evaluate emojis as possible surrogates for the non-verbal aspects of hand hygiene behaviour. METHODS: Following a thorough review of the Unicode ver

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Persistence of Enveloped Viruses in Environmental Waters and Wastewater in the Absence of Disinfectants.

Enveloped viruses are characterized by a lipid-containing envelope that encapsulates the virion, and they have been the cause of major outbreaks and pandemics. Some enveloped viruses are excreted in feces and other bodily fluids of infected people and animals, raising the question of their fate in the aquatic environment. Consequently, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the decay rate constants (k) of enveloped viruses from 12 families (i.e., Coronaviridae, Cystoviridae (specifically Phi6), Filoviridae, Hepadnaviridae, Herpesviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Paramyxoviridae, Pneumo

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of seasonal influenza vaccination in postpartum women, Honduras.

BACKGROUND: Influenza during pregnancy may cause serious neonatal outcomes including stillbirth, fetal distress, preterm birth, congenital abnormalities, and stunted growth. Pregnant women are the highest priority group for seasonal influenza vaccination, but low coverage has been repeatedly reported in this population. Understanding reasons for and for not receiving the seasonal influenza vaccine is needed to design communication strategies to increase vaccination coverage. This study aimed to describe knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of seasonal influenza vaccination among women giv

Maternal unwanted and intrusive thoughts of infant-related harm, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression in the perinatal period: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Unwanted, intrusive thoughts of harm-related to the infant are reported by the vast majority of new mothers, with half of all new mothers reporting unwanted, intrusive thoughts of harming their infant on purpose. Thoughts of intentional harm, in particular, are distressing to women, their partners and the people who care for them. While maternal, unwanted and intrusive thoughts of infant-related harm are known to be associated with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression, preliminary evidence suggests that they are not associated with an increased risk of harm to infants

Pollen reverses decreased lifespan, altered nutritional metabolism and suppressed immunity in honey bees (Apis mellifera) treated with antibiotics.

Nutrition is involved in regulating multiple aspects of honey bee biology such as caste, immunity, lifespan, growth and behavioral development. Deformed wing virus (DWV) is a major pathogenic factor which threatens honey bee populations, and its replication is regulated by the nutrition status and immune response of honey bees. The alimentary canal of the honey bee is home to a diverse microbial community that provides essential nutrients and serves to bolster immune responses. However, to what extent gut bacteria affect honey bee nutrition metabolism and immunity with respect to DWV has not b

Diagnosis of Fetal Anomaly and the Increased Maternal Psychological Toll Associated with Pregnancy Termination.

Approximately 4% of U.S. abortions occur in desired pregnancies, with many resulting from fetal anomalies. The majority of terminations occur in the second trimester; however in recent years first-trimester ultrasound measurement for nuchal translucency, calculation of risk based on maternal age, and biochemistry at 11-14 weeks gestation, have resulted in earlier prenatal diagnoses for chromosomal abnormalities. First trimester ultrasound can also now lead to diagnoses of major structural abnormalities including anecephaly, ventral wall defects, and limb abnormalities. The American College of

Respondent-driven sampling in a study of drug users in New York City: notes from the field.

Beth Israel Medical Center (BIMC), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), used respondent-driven sampling (RDS) in a study of HIV seroprevalence among drug users in New York City in 2004. We report here on operational issues with RDS including recruitment, coupon distribution, storefront operations, police and community relations, and the overall lessons we learned. Project staff recruited eight seeds from a syringe exchange in Lower Manhattan to serve as the initial study participants. Upon completion of the interview

Leveraging social media to mitigate HPV vaccine service disruptions in Abuja, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Market priming strategies use communication to prepare target audiences for service uptake when services become available. In 2025, a health worker strike in Abuja, Nigeria resulted in the suspension of HPV vaccination services for approximately four months. Services were temporarily restored for five days (July 16-20, 2025) during a Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) week. This study assessed whether caregiver recall of a digital market priming campaign was associated with HPV vaccine uptake during this brief service resumption. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional e

Subnational introduction of the RTS,S/AS01E malaria vaccine into routine immunization: experience and lessons from the three pilot countries.

BACKGROUND: In October 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the RTS,S/AS01E (RTS,S) malaria vaccine for the prevention of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children living in endemic areas informed by evidence from the subnational pilot introduction and evaluation in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi as part of the WHO-coordinated Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme (MVIP). With the global vaccine supply boosted by the pre-qualification of a second malaria vaccine, R21/Matrix-M (R21), in October 2023, many endemic countries (20 as of April 2025) have introduced malaria vaccines int

Study protocol for COVID-19 breakthrough infections and vaccine-induced immune response among a cohort of healthcare workers, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: To optimize vaccination strategies, it is useful to detect breakthrough infections and assess vaccine effectiveness in programmatic use. Monitoring emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and vaccine effectiveness against them is also essential to determine the most effective vaccine options. This study aims to monitor SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infections, the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants, and host immune response during the peri-infection period of COVID-19. The study will also assess the uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine booster doses, and associated barriers or motivations among healthc

Novel Machine Learning HIV Intervention for Sexual and Gender Minority Young People Who Have Sex With Men (uTECH): Protocol for a Randomized Comparison Trial.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young people are disproportionately affected by HIV in the United States, and substance use is a major driver of new infections. People who use web-based venues to meet sex partners are more likely to report substance use, sexual risk behaviors, and sexually transmitted infections. To our knowledge, no machine learning (ML) interventions have been developed that use web-based and digital technologies to inform and personalize HIV and substance use prevention efforts for SGM young people. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to test the acceptability, appropr
