Neural damage associated with atopic diathesis: a nationwide survey in Japan.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the occurrence of myelitis in patients with atopic disorders (atopic myelitis [AM]). To uncover the spectrum of neural damage associated with atopy, we conducted a cross-sectional nationwide survey of AM and atopy-related peripheral neuritis (APN), including Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS), in individuals with atopic diathesis. METHOD: Cases with AM diagnosed between 1996 and 2006 and cases with APN between 2000 and 2006 were collected from all over Japan. Detailed data on 109 patients with AM and 133 patients with APN were collated. RESULTS: Patients with APN

A narrative review of Catamenial dermatology: A glimpse into the menstrual symphony.

The menstrual cycle induces a wide range of physiological changes in the skin and its appendages, often overlooked in dermatologic practice. Catamenial dermatoses, influenced by hormonal fluctuations, present with cyclical skin manifestations. This review explores the underrecognized intersection between menstruation and dermatology, highlighting changes across menstrual phases such as variations in hydration, lipid levels, pigmentation, hair and nail growth, and sweat gland activity. Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis and estrogen dermatitis are key examples of hormone-induced skin responses.

Complete blood count profiles in children with eczema herpeticum.

Eczema herpeticum (EH) can be a life-threatening condition. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial. In this article, we retrospectively assessed the use of screening complete blood count (CBC) to differentiate EH from bacterial skin infection and eczema exacerbation in children who were hospitalized for atopic dermatitis (AD). Children with EH had consistent leukopenia and lymphopenia, relative to the comparison groups as well as standard references.

CCL27 Signaling in the Tumor Microenvironment.

Chemokines are a group of small proteins which play an important role in leukocyte migration and invasion. They are also involved in the cellular proliferation and migration of tumor cells.Chemokine CCL27 (cutaneous T cell-attracting chemokine, CTACK) is mainly expressed by keratinocytes of the normal epidermis. It is well known that this chemokine plays an important role in several inflammatory diseases of the skin, such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis. Moreover, several studies have shown an association between CCL27 expression and a variety of neoplasms including ski

Establishment of a gene recombination method for a major human skin commensal fungus, Malassezia restricta, using Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated gene transfer system.

Malassezia restricta is the most predominant fungus in the microbiome of human skin. This microorganism can cause or exacerbate Malassezia-associated skin dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and pityriasis versicolor. The virulence factors of M. restricta have not been analyzed because a gene recombination system has not been developed. In this study, we established an Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated gene transfer (ATMT) system, optimized for generating gene-deficient mutants of M. restricta. A mutant of FKB1 gene, which encodes the FKBP12 protein that binds to the calcine…

An overview of international clinical trials with halometasone cream.

In international multicentre comparative clinical trials carried out by dermatologists in 717 patients with non-infected acute eczematous dermatoses at 28 trial centres in Austria, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and Yugoslavia, halometasone cream exhibited a very satisfactory therapeutic effect in acute contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, nummular dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis. It yielded 'good' to 'very good' results in 89.7% of the 333 patients treated with halometasone cream. Halometasone cream was significantly more effective than Diproderm, Diprosone and Ultralan creams with res…

Changes in disease pattern in a skin clinic 1947 to 1977.

The changes in disease pattern in a Danish skin clinic during the period 1947 to 1977 is reported. The data rest upon comparisons from patient registrations taken with ten years interval. The study also comprises comparison of frequencies of positive patch tests between 1947 and 1977. The data show, that the disease pattern was far from stable. An increased frequency was registered in atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, drug eruptions, urticaria, skin cancer, psoriasis and viral diseases. While reductions were found in all other infectious diseases, seborrheic dermatitis, and so ca

Contact allergy to and allergic contact dermatitis from formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers: A clinical review and update.

This review aims to provide a clinically useful update regarding the role of formaldehyde (FA) and its five main releasers (FRs) quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (bronopol) in contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis. These ubiquitous preservatives are still often present, and sometimes undeclared, in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, household detergents, and chemical (industrial) products. In Europe, the use of free FA and quaternium-15 in cosmetics is forbidden and contact allergy rates have been fou

Effects of vitamin D levels and vitamin D supplementation on allergic diseases: an umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: The association between vitamin D levels/supplementation and the risk of allergic diseases has been extensively studied. However, the strength and consistency of the existing evidence remain unclear, and most reviews have focused on single diseases. This umbrella review aims to systematically evaluate the current meta-analytic evidence on the associations between vitamin D and allergic diseases, in order to establish a hierarchy of evidence and identify research gaps. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to Octob

Innovative approaches to eczema treatment: A review of Fevipiprant and its potential as a new therapeutic agent.

Eczema is also known as atopic dermatitis, which goes on to affect the skin as a chronic inflammatory disease. It is associated with a constant feeling of scratchiness, erthyma and disruption of the natural skin barrier. Treatment provided at present may improve some of the symptoms, for instance use of corticosteroids or immunosuppressive agents, however, there is an overwhelming need for better focused and effective methods of treatment with minimal adverse effects. Fevipiprant, a DP2 receptor antagonist, has emerged as a promising agent targeting prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) pathways, which play

A systematic review and expert Delphi Consensus recommendation on the use of vaccines in patients receiving dupilumab: A position paper of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

BACKGROUND: Dupilumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the interleukin (IL)-4 receptor alpha subunit, thus blocking the effects of IL-4 and IL-13, and has shown efficacy in treating various conditions including asthma, atopic dermatitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, and others. Because of its immune modulatory effects, clinical trials that studied dupilumab did not allow patients to receive live vaccines during the clinical trials because of an abundance of caution, and thus package inserts recommend that patients who are being treated with dupilumab should avoid live vaccines. Because dupil

Tracking Mycoviruses in Public RNAseq Datasets of Malassezia: Three Original Totiviruses Revealed.

Mycoviruses are viruses that selectively infect and multiply in fungal cells. Malassezia is the most abundant fungus on human skin and is associated with a variety of conditions, including atopic eczema, atopic dermatitis, dandruff, folliculitis, pityriasis versicolor, and seborrheic dermatitis. Here, we conducted mycovirome studies on 194 public transcriptomes of Malassezia (2,568,212,042 paired-end reads) screened against all available viral proteins. Transcriptomic data were assembled de novo resulting in 1,170,715 contigs and 2,995,306 open reading frames (ORFs) that were subsequently trac

How a Family History of Allergic Diseases Influences Food Allergy in Children: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

The influence of family allergic history on food allergy in offspring in Japan is unknown. We analyzed data from a nationwide birth cohort study using logistic regression models to examine the associations of maternal, paternal, and both parental histories of allergic diseases (food allergy, atopic dermatitis, asthma, and rhinitis) with their child’s food allergy at 1.5 and 3 years of age. This analysis included 69,379 singleton full-term mothers and 37,179 fathers and their children. All parental histories of allergic diseases showed significant positive associations with their child’s food a

Unmet Medical Needs in Chronic, Non-communicable Inflammatory Skin Diseases.

An estimated 20-25% of the population is affected by chronic, non-communicable inflammatory skin diseases. Chronic skin inflammation has many causes. Among the most frequent chronic inflammatory skin diseases are atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, urticaria, lichen planus, and hidradenitis suppurativa, driven by a complex interplay of genetics and environmental factors. Autoimmunity is another important cause of chronic skin inflammation. The autoimmune response may be mainly T cell driven, such as in alopecia areata or vitiligo, or B cell driven in chronic spontaneous urticaria, pemphigus and pemp

Electrical neurostimulation for the treatment of chronic pruritus: A systematic review.

Approximately one fifth of the world population experiences continuous itch for 6 weeks or more during their life, that is chronic itch. It is diverse in its aetiologies, and it is notoriously hard to treat. Because itch and pain have largely overlapping pathophysiology and the demonstrated efficacy of neurostimulation in treatment of selected chronic pain conditions, we conducted a systematic review to investigate whether neurostimulation could be an effective treatment for chronic itch. We identified two randomized controlled trials and 17 open label studies or case reports investigating var
