Arachidonic acid is preferentially biomagnified over DHA in fetal erythrocytes: evidence from 172 paired maternal-cord samples in Oman.

The selective transfer of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) from mother to fetus is essential for fetal development, particularly neurodevelopment and membrane synthesis. While docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been the focus of research, emerging evidence suggests arachidonic acid (AA) may be more strongly biomagnified across the placenta. We hypothesized that arachidonic acid (AA) would be preferentially biomagnified over docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in fetal erythrocytes compared to maternal erythrocytes. This cross-sectional study investigated fatty acid biomagnification using er…

Induction of human-fetal-membrane remodeling in-vitro by the alpha hemolysin of Escherichia coli.

INTRODUCTION: Almost 80% of urinary tract infections during pregnancy are caused by uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli. Alpha-hemolysin, toxin secreted by them, has a fundamental role in this pathology development. Considering that urinary tract infections are related with premature rupture of fetal membranes, we proposed to evaluate the effects that alpha-hemolysin induces on human-fetal-membranes. METHODS: Thirteen fetal membranes obtained from elective cesarean sections (>37 weeks) were mounted in a transwell-device generating two independent chambers. To mimic an ascendant-urinary-

Contemporary Outcomes in Tetralogy of Fallot With Absent Pulmonary Valve After Fetal Diagnosis.

Background Tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve is associated with high mortality, but it remains difficult to predict outcomes prenatally. We aimed to identify risk factors for mortality in a large multicenter cohort. Methods and Results Fetal echocardiograms and clinical data from 19 centers over a 10-year period were collected. Primary outcome measures included fetal demise and overall mortality. Of 100 fetuses, pregnancy termination/postnatal nonintervention was elected in 22. Of 78 with intention to treat, 7 (9%) died in utero and 21 (27%) died postnatally. With median follow-u

Differences in fetal fractional limb volume changes in normal and gestational diabetic pregnancies: an exploratory observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal fractional limb volume has been proposed as a useful measure for quantifying fetal soft tissue development. The aim of this study was to investigate the growth of fractional arm volume (AVol) and fractional thigh volume (TVol) of fetuses with maternal gestational diabetes (GDM) compared with those of fetuses with normal glucose tolerance (NGT). We hypothesised fetal fractional limb volume would be larger in the GDM group than in the NGT group in late gestation. DESIGN: Exploratory observational study. SETTING: Saitama Municipal Hospital. SAMPLE: A total of 165 (125 NGT and

The ontogeny of the endocrine pancreas in the fetal/newborn baboon.

Erratic regulation of glucose metabolism including hyperglycemia is a common condition in premature infants and is associated with increased … ndocrine cell percent areas than adults. Cells with mixed endocrine/exocrine phenotype occur during fetal development. Developmental differences may play a role in glucose homeostasis during the neonatal period and may have long-term implications.

The effects of serial intravascular transfusions in ascitic/hydropic RhD-alloimmunized fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of serial intravascular transfusions on RhD-alloimmunized fetuses with ascites/hydrops at the time of the first transfusion by measuring multiple hematological/biochemical blood variables. METHODS: Thirty-one singleton pregnancies were referred for management of RhD alloimmunization. Seven fetuses had hydrops on presentation and were transfused immediately. The remainder underwent weekly ultrasound examinations, and fetal blood sampling and transfusion were performed on development of ascites. In the 104 samples collected overall from the 31 fetuses, glucose

Operative fetoscopy: new perspective in fetal therapy?

In a limited number of conditions in utero surgery may be life-saving, such as some cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung, sacrococcygeal teratoma and lower urinary tract obstruction. Postoperative premature labour and its extreme invasiveness have been major drawbacks for open fetal surgery. More recently the merger of fetoscopy and advanced video-endoscopic surgery has been the basis of the concept of endoscopic fetal surgery. In order to evaluate the opportunities of 'fetendo' surgery, animal models have been developed to test the safety of th

Fetal Electrocardiogram Extraction Based on Tensor Decomposition of Multi-Dimensional Subspace Representation.

Since fetal ECG (FECG) produces much lower signal amplitudes than maternal ECG (MECG), it is highly susceptible to volume-conduction effects, respiration, and fetal movements. Therefore, the observed abdominal signals exhibit pronounced nonlinear mixing and time-varying characteristics, which severely limit extraction accuracy. To tackle this complex maternal-fetal mixing, this paper pro poses a tensor decomposition of multi-dimensional sub space representation (TD-MDSC) scheme for improving ex traction accuracy and robustness. First, an adaptive multi subspace decoupling (AMSD) mechanism is d

Isolated Asymptomatic Fetal Intracardiac Mass: A Case of Rhabdomyoma.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal cardiac rhabdomyoma is one of the rare benign cardiac masses which is commonly associated with the tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Though mostly fetal cardiac rhabdomyoma is asymptomatic it may lead to life-threatening conditions like outflow obstruction, arrhythmias, hydrops fetalis, or sudden fetal death. CASE REPORT: We are reporting an isolated, asymptomatic fetal intra-cardiac mass (rhabdomyoma) that was discovered at 32 weeks of gestation and was followed as an outpatient until 39 weeks plus one day, at which point a cesarean section was performed. After delivery,

Pregnancy outcome following infections by coxsackie, echo, measles, mumps, hepatitis, polio and encephalitis viruses.

Women may be infected during pregnancy with infectious agents that are often passed unnoticed; however, the causative agent may still traverse the placenta and infect the developing embryo and fetus. Several of these agents (i.e. rubella, cytomegalovirus or Toxoplasma Gondii) may cause severe fetal damage, but most other infections in pregnancy seem to be much less dangerous to the fetus. In this review we discuss the effects of several viral infections during pregnancy where the effects on the developing embryo and fetus are infrequent, but they may sometimes cause severe neonatal disease. The combined method: a novel access technique for fetal endoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: To develop practical and less invasive techniques for fetal endoscopic surgery, new methods of lifting the uterine wall to allow fetal surgery without maternal laparotomy were developed and assessed. METHODS: Fetal endoscopic surgical procedures, including tracheostomy and umbilical vascular cannulation, were performed using one of the three methods to enter the uterus without maternal laparotomy in pregnant goats (n = 6; 105 to 115 days' gestation): (1) direct uterine lifting with an air-cushion device; (2) indirect uterine lifting, in which the uterine wall was fixed to

Placental physiology and fetal programming in ruminants under heat stress.

The placenta plays a crucial role in transferring nutrients and oxygen between the dam and fetus during pregnancy. It is highly influenced by environmental conditions, especially stressors such as heat and nutritional deficiencies, which can significantly impact the fetus's long-term health and development. Cattle, especially dairy cows, commonly experience stress during late gestation, which can lead to changes in behavior and physiology, affecting both subsequent milk production and fetal development. Heat stress is one of the most common stressors experienced by mammals, and recent evidence…

An epigenetic blueprint for placental syncytiotrophoblast development.

The placenta establishes a continuous epithelial barrier that separates maternal and fetal blood. The cell type lining this barrier is the syncytiotrophoblast (STB), an exceptional lineage comprising innumerable nuclei enclosed within a single uninterrupted cytoplasm. The STB mediates nutrient and gas exchange between maternal and fetal circulations and performs vital endocrine functions that modify maternal physiology to sustain pregnancy and support fetal growth. Maintenance of STB integrity is therefore critical for pregnancy success, and dysregulation of its formation and function is impli

The Importance of Motherhood for Early Maternal Bonding and Engagement.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal perceptions about the importance of motherhood have been found to impact a variety of maternal well-being outcomes, but the impact of the importance of motherhood for the early maternal bonding relationship and on caregiving behaviors has not been explored. Examining attitudinal factors associated with maternal-infant bonding or early caregiving behaviors is essential for the development of effective interventions. METHODS: Using a clinic-based, urban sample of predominately low-income and diverse pregnant women (N = 177), we used hierarchical linear regression analysis

Single-cell RNA sequencing of leukocytes at the maternal-fetal interface in physiological and pathological Nodal-deficient pregnancies.

Leukocytes at the maternal-fetal interface have critical functions during pregnancy in the prevention of maternal reactivity towards fetal alloantigens, suppression of excess inflammation and promotion of placental angiogenesis. Failed maternal immune adaptations to pregnancy can lead to placental insufficiency and the development of severe reproductive complications. Recent evidence from mouse models has suggested that Nodal, a secreted morphogen of the TGFβ superfamily, is an immunoregulator of pregnancy. The absence of Nodal expression in the female reproductive tract (NodalΔ/Δ) resulted in

Allele-specific CRISPR perturbation of the imprinted Dlk1-Dio3 domain reveals regulation of BMP-NOTCH-VEGF signaling in embryonic organogenesis.

The Dlk1-Dio3 imprinted domain is essential for mammalian development, yet its role in coordinating multi-organ embryogenesis is not fully understood. Here we generated four distinct mouse models via CRISPR/Cas9-mediated insertion of a transcriptional termination cassette within the Dlk1-Dio3 domain, encompassing homozygous (HOMO), maternally inherited (MK), paternally inherited (PK), and wild-type alleles (WT), to elucidate parent-of-origin-specific effects. Integrative transcriptomic analyses across multiple scales revealed allele-specific dysregulation of imprinted genes and altered epigene

Intrauterine exposure to glyphosate-based herbicide during pregnancy induces testicular impairment via activating ferroptosis in offspring.

Glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) is a broad-spectrum herbicide extensively used in agriculture, which poses increased residual risks in grains and food products, thereby endangering human health. However, the impact of maternal GBH exposure on fetal testicular development, as well as the protective effects of dietary betaine supplementation, remains inadequately understood. Hereby, pregnant sow models were established to elucidate the effects of GBH exposure at concentrations of 20 and 100 mg/kg and to investigate the protective mechanisms of betaine. The results showed that GBH and betaine ha

Overexpression of lipocalin 2 in PBX1-deficient decidual NK cells promotes inflammation at the maternal-fetal interface.

PROBLEM: Impairment of PBX1 expression in decidual natural killer (dNK) cells is associated with the pathogenesis of unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion, which results in fetal growth restriction (FGR) by affecting the secretion of downstream growth factors. However, whether other mechanisms limit embryo growth in decidua containing PBX1-deficient natural killer (NK) cells is unknown. METHOD OF STUDY: Pbx1f/f ; Ncr1Cre mice were employed to explore the underlying mechanisms by which PBX1- NK cells affect embryonic development. To simulate the clinical testing of pregnant women, Doppler
