Considerable attention has been devoted to the risks from mercury (Hg) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) to high-level predators (including humans) who consume freshwater fish. Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued advisories because of Hg for four marine fish species, there are few data on lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), or other metals in Bering Sea fish generally, or on the risk these levels pose to the fish themselves or to consumers of marine fish. Levels of arsenic (As), Cd, chromium (Cr), Pb, Hg, and selenium (Se) levels were examined in muscle and liver of 142 Pacific

India is an agrarian country. The use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides were introduced in India during the mid-sixties, which are now being used on a large scale and is a common feature of Indian agriculture. The main intention of the introduction of pesticides was to prevent and control insects, pests and diseases in the field crops. Initially the use of pesticides reduced pest attack and paved way for increasing the crop yield as expected. Simultaneously, increased use of chemical pesticides has resulted in contamination of environment and also caused many long-term affect on the soc

Cases of botulism in a family in eastern Anatolia were studied. In late September 2005, an outbreak of botulism developed in our region, first in 2 patients, a teenage boy and his mother, in whom the disease culminated in respiratory insufficiency and death. An additional 8 cases of botulism were identified later; most of them presented to our medical centre the next d. These patients with milder symptoms recovered gradually. All the patients received anti-botulinum toxin. The investigation of the source of the outbreak showed an unexpected vehicle for botulism infection in the these patients,

The work described in this paper examined the possible relationship between fish consumption and human fecundity among Japanese women using hair mercury level and time to pregnancy (TTP) as indicators of fish consumption and fecundity. We hypothesized that hair mercury concentrations reflect the level of fish consumption and, consequently, can also be taken to indicate the level of intake of organochlorine compounds (OCs) such as dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) for which fish are the primary source, and which can disrupt normal human reproductive processes. TTP was obtained by a s

Exposure to mercury species was assessed in the hair of 130 Spanish children (age 4) from the general population in two areas. Both areas are exposed to different sources of mercury: a point source in Ribera d'Ebre (northeastern Spain) and a diffuse source on the island of Menorca (northwestern Mediterranean). The median MeHg values in the hair of children from Ribera d'Ebre (RE) were nearly twice (0.631 microg/g vs. 0.370 microg/g) those of children from Menorca (MC) (p < 0.05). Total Hg showed a similar trend (REmedian: 0.720 microg/g vs. MCmedian: 0.476 microg/g). Nevertheless, inorganic me

A new chromogenic reagent 2-[2-(5-bromoquinolinylazo)]-5-diethylaminophenol (5-Br-QADEAP) was synthesized, and its structure was verified by elemental analysis, infrared spectrum, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. The color reaction of 5-Br-QADEAP with cadmium was studied. In the presence of pH 8.0 buffer solution and Triton X-100 medium, 5-Br-QADEAP can react with cadmium(II) to form a stable 2 : 1 complex (5-Br-QADEAP: Cd(II). The molar absorptivity is 1.60 x 10(5) L x mol(-1) x cm(-1) at 595 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0-1.0 microg x mL(-1). The cadmium ion in the sam

CONTEXT: Fish (finfish or shellfish) may have health benefits and also contain contaminants, resulting in confusion over the role of fish consumption in a healthy diet.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: We searched MEDLINE, governmental reports, and meta-analyses, supplemented by hand reviews of references and direct investigator contacts, to identify reports published through April 2006 evaluating (1) intake of fish or fish oil and cardiovascular risk, (2) effects of methylmercury and fish oil on early neurodevelopment, (3) risks of methylmercury for cardiovascular and neurologic outcomes in adults, and

Female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) were fed diets containing 5, 10, or 20 ppm mercury as methylmercury chloride. One egg was collected from each bird before the start of the mercury diets and 15 eggs were collected from each bird while it was being fed mercury. The mercury diets were then replaced by uncontaminated diets, and each female was allowed to lay 29 more eggs. Mercury levels in eggs rose to about 7, 18, and 35 ppm wet-weight in females fed 5, 10, or 20 ppm mercury, respectively. Mercury levels fell to about 0.16, 0.80, and 1.7 ppm in the last egg laid by birds that had earlier been

The extensive use of fish meal as a source of protein for poultry and swine may lead to additional exposure to methylmercury (MeHg). We determined the concentration of MeHg and inorganic mercury (I-Hg) in blood and total mercury (T-Hg) in hair in 27 persons (9 men and 18 women, 20-58 years of age) who stated that they had consumed no fish for a period of 2 years or more. The participants answered a food frequency questionnaire and reported their number of dental amalgam fillings. The MeHg concentrations in blood (median, 0.10 microg/L; range, 0.0-1.0 microg/L) were very low and did not constit

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is a fatal and untreatable neurological disease, in which pathogenic prions (PrPSc) are involved. There is convincing epidemiological and experimental evidence that vCJD is a human expression of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The risk of transmission of pathogenic prions which cause vCJD to humans is influenced by the species barrier, genetic susceptibility of the host, dose of infection and route of exposure. Transmission of pathogenic prions from bovines to humans is possible through meat products containing nerve and lymphatic tissue, and th

The presence of chlorinated organic compounds in breast milk of lactating women living in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, has been followed since 1972. Following the highest concentration found at the start of the measurements, contamination by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides, such as beta-HCH and DDT declined to about 3-13% of the peak levels by the mid-1970s and continued to decrease to low-level equilibrium states. This decline varies greatly with the chemical compound. In comparison with 1970s, when the contamination of breast milk was highest, the beta-HCH level fe

BACKGROUND: Very few sporadic cases of autochthonous diphyllobothriasis have been reported in Italy during the past 20 years, probably due to the drastic decrease or disappearance of some fish species, mainly Perca fluviatilis L., known as the intermediate host of the infective larval stage of this tapeworm. However, increasing consumption of raw or undercooked fish during the last years as influenced by Oriental cuisine, played an important role in a number of new single cases of the infection or microepidemics.
PATIENTS: We describe six cases which were diagnosed within a period of 4 months

Consumption of monensin-containing feed contaminated with macrolide antibiotic residues resulted in the death of cattle from multiple feedlots in south-central Kansas. Cattle were fed milo dried distiller's grains (DDG) with solubles from a common source in conjunction with the ionophore antibiotic, monensin. Deaths occurred as early as 72-96 hours after feeding and were preceded by either no premonitory signs or 1 or more of the following: anorexia, depression, dyspnea, locomotor deficits, and recumbency. Significant gross lesions were pulmonary and mesenteric edema, hepatomegaly, and general

Chromium and zinc contamination of components of parenteral nutrient (PN) solutions used in infants and children was studied. Solutions of amino acids, L-cysteine hydrochloride, dextrose, electrolytes, minerals, vitamins, multiple trace elements, and individual trace elements were obtained. A variety of manufacturers, lots, and expiration dates were represented when possible. The solutions were analyzed for chromium and zinc by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. In all amino acid products, chromium concentration was below the limit of detection and zinc concentration ranged from 0.06 t

Seven species of fish were surveyed for muscle tissue mercury content across a broad area of western Alaska. Total mercury levels were determined by cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy in 66 fish sampled during 1997. Methylmercury in sampled fish amounted to 97 to 100% of total mercury values. Using mercury consumption risk levels derived from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hazard assessment models, mean total mercury was determined to be above the human critical value of 0.2 g/g (ppm) in 29% of the fish species, and 62% of the fish species contained mercury exceeding the wildlif
