New MR imaging assessment tool to define brain abnormalities in very preterm infants at term.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: WM injury is the dominant form of injury in preterm infants. However, other cerebral structures, including the deep gray matter and the cerebellum, can also be affected by injury and/or impaired growth. Current MR imaging injury assessment scales are subjective and are challenging to apply. Thus, we developed a new assessment tool and applied it to MR imaging studies obtained from very preterm infants at term age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR imaging scans from 97 very preterm infants (< 30 weeks' gestation) and 22 healthy term-born infants were evaluated retrospectively.

Assessment of postoperative postvoid residual bladder volume using three-dimensional ultrasound volumetry.

The aim of our prospective study was to assess the concordance between postvoid residual volumes (PVR) of the urinary bladder obtained by two different three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound (US) volumetric methods (VOCAL and XI VOCAL) and with measurement by the catheter in postoperative patients who have undergone radical hysterectomy. The 3-D sonographic volume-determination of PVR with both methods correlated significantly with the actual amount of PVR by the catheter. The accuracy of both 3-D US volumetric methods was significantly higher under 300 mL of PVR. Bland-Altman plots were generated

Experimental topographic study of high-resolution tympanocochlear scintigraphy using the human temporal bone model.

To determine the diagnostic value of tympanocochlear scintigraphy (TCS), which is still used for the visualization of alterations of labyrinthine bone metabolism due to active otosclerosis, resolution and detection limits were examined in a normal human temporal bone model. After incubation in technetium-99m-labeled diphosphonate solution, scintigraphic imaging showed the zygomatic process and the clivus as landmarks for fine structures of the petrous bone. For further differentiation, labyrinthine fine structures were marked with radioactive tracers of 0.5-1 mm2 each. High-resolution scintigr

Automated segmentation of the femur and pelvis from 3D CT data of diseased hip using hierarchical statistical shape model of joint structure.

Segmentation of the femur and pelvis from 3D data is prerequisite of patient specific planning and simulation for hip surgery. Separation of the femoral head and acetabulum is one of main difficulties in the diseased hip joint due to deformed shapes and extreme narrowness of the joint space. In this paper, we develop a hierarchical multi-object statistical shape model representing joint structure for automated segmentation of the diseased hip from 3D CT images. In order to represent shape variations as well as pose variations of the femur against the pelvis, both shape and pose variations are

Variability of Visual Assessment in Determining Tibial Component Alignment in Total Ankle Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Accurate implant positioning is essential for long-term success in total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). Although patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) and advanced imaging have improved technical precision, intraoperative alignment assessment still relies heavily on visual interpretation of fluoroscopy. The reliability of visual assessment remains poorly understood. This study evaluated the accuracy and reliability of visual assessment of tibial component alignment in TAA. METHODS: Seventeen raters assessed 21 TAA cases (15 unique, 6 duplicated) using standardized anteroposterior (AP)

Transcatheter closure of a sinus venosus atrial septal defect using 3D printing and image fusion guidance.

A 63-year-old man with cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and coagulopathy was diagnosed with a sinus venosus atrial septal defect (ASD) and partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR) of the right upper pulmonary vein (RUPV). Transcatheter repair by positioning a stent graft in the superior vena cava was planned. Based on three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of gated cardiac CTA, a 28 mm × 7 cm Endurant II® aortic extension stent graft (Medtronic, MN) was chosen. A 3D model printed from the CTA was used to simulate device deployment, demonstrating successful exclusion of the sinus ve

Video-based eye tracking for neuropsychiatric assessment.

This paper presents a video-based eye-tracking method, ideally deployed via a mobile device or laptop-based webcam, as a tool for measuring brain function. Eye movements and pupillary motility are tightly regulated by brain circuits, are subtly perturbed by many disease states, and are measurable using video-based methods. Quantitative measurement of eye movement by readily available webcams may enable early detection and diagnosis, as well as remote/serial monitoring, of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. We successfully extracted computational and semantic features for 14 testing s

Potential of the signature index (S-index), a diffusion MRI Biomarker, to enhance diagnosis of clinically significant prostate cancer and decrease the rate of unnecessary biopsies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potential of the signature index (S-index) and the shifted apparent diffusion coefficient (sADC), both markers of non-Gaussian diffusion, for the diagnosis of prostate cancer. METHODS: This retrospective study included 180 patients with 264 target lesions (95 cancerous) who underwent MRI-US fusion-guided prostate biopsy. Multiparametric MRI, including diffusion-weighted imaging with three b values (0, 200, and 1500 s/mm2), was performed to calculate sADC and the S-index. The diagnostic performances of these biomarkers were assessed using ROC analyses and compared wi

Water-exchange pharmacokinetic modeling improves DCE-MRI for ROI-based assessment of prostate lesions and of clinically significant prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: Quantitative multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) is increasingly explored for clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) detection; however, the diagnostic value of quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-MRI in prostate cancer remains controversial. In this study, we aim to evaluate the diagnostic performance of water-exchange DCE-MRI in distinguishing prostate tumors from benign tissue and differentiating csPCa from clinically insignificant (CIS) disease. METHODS: This retrospective study included 89 patients who underwent prostate DCE-MRI between March 2022 and October 2023. DCE-

Assessment of left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony in left bundle branch block canine model: Comparison between cine and tagged MRI.

PURPOSE: To compare cine and tagged magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for left ventricular dyssynchrony assessment in left bundle branch block (LBBB), using the time-to-peak contraction timing, and a novel approach based on cross-correlation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated a canine model dataset (n = 10) before (pre-LBBB) and after induction of isolated LBBB (post-LBBB). Multislice short-axis tagged and cine MRI images were acquired using a 1.5 T scanner. We computed contraction time maps by cross-correlation, based on the timing of radial wall motion and of circumferential strain. Finall

Breast ultrasound elastography and magnetic resonance imaging of fibrotic changes of breast disease: correlations between elastography findings and pathologic and short Tau inversion recovery imaging results, including the enhancement ratio and apparent diffusion coefficient.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound (US) elastography provides information regarding tissue hardness and is expected to become a novel diagnostic tool for breast disease. In contrast, magnetic resonance (MR) images reflect the tissue characteristics. Fibrosis of the stroma of breast diseases may affect their hardness. We investigated the correlation among elasticity score (ES) and signal intensity of short Tau inversion recovery MR images, enhancement ratio, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and the fibrosis in the breast lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the findings of US elastography and MR

Non-invasive vascular radial/circumferential strain imaging and wall shear rate estimation using video images of diagnostic ultrasound.

The aim of this work was to develop a convenient method for radial/circumferential strain imaging and shear rate estimation that could be used as a supplement to the current routine screening for carotid atherosclerosis using video images of diagnostic ultrasound. A reflection model-based correction for gray-scale non-uniform distribution was applied to B-mode video images before strain estimation to improve the accuracy of radial/circumferential strain imaging when applied to vessel transverse cross sections. The incremental and cumulative radial/circumferential strain images can then be calc

Using an ultrasound elasticity microscope to map three-dimensional strain in a porcine cornea.

An ultrasound elasticity microscope was used to map 3-D strain volume in an ex vivo porcine cornea to illustrate its ability to measure the mechanical properties of this tissue. Mechanical properties of the cornea play an important role in its function and, therefore, also in ophthalmic diseases such as kerataconus and corneal ectasia. The ultrasound elasticity microscope combines a tightly focused high-frequency transducer with confocal scanning to produce high-quality speckle over the entire volume of tissue. This system and the analysis were able to generate volume maps of compressional str
