Myelomeningocele - a single institute analysis of the years 2007 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: After the introduction of folate supplementation, the number of open spinal dysraphism was successfully reduced over time. In 2007, the department for pediatric neurosurgery was established in the children's hospital. Since then, newborns with myelomeningocele (MMC), the most common form of open neural tube defects (NTD), are treated here. The aim of this study is to present the concepts applied to and experiences resulting from treatment of MMC. METHODS: Records of all newborns with MMC treated surgically during the period January 2007 to August 2015 in our institution were analy

[Pancreatic metastases--diagnosis, radical surgery, complications and survival].

INTRODUCTION: Although generally uncommon, pancreatic metastases are increasingly encountered in clinical practice. The benefit of pancreatic resections in this setting is unclear and still being discussed. Renal cell carcinoma is the most frequent primary tumour metastasing to the pancreas--R0 resections in cases of solitary metastases can be performed. Resections in malignant melanoma and ovarian cancer are rather considered as palliative. The aim of this study is to analyse our own set of patients operated on for metastases into the pancreas and evaluate the results of their surgical treatm

68Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT of neuroendocrine tumors: spotlight on the CT phases of a triple-phase protocol.

UNLABELLED: The diagnostic value of neuroendocrine tumor (NET) imaging using PET with integrated CT is dependent on both components. This retrospective study assessed the value of the single CT phases of a triple-phase (early arterial, portal-venous inflow, and venous) CT protocol in comparison to (68)Ga-DOTATOC PET in a masked reading. METHODS: (68)Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT examinations from 51 patients with known or suspected NET were included. Two readers assessed the data of PET and each of the 3 CT phases for NET lesions independently (using a 3-point score: 1 = benign, 2 = indeterminate, and 3

[Hypodontia: therapeutic strategy elaborated from 30 cases].

INTRODUCTION: Hypodontia is defined as the absence of at least six permanent teeth due to the hypodevelopment of tooth germs. The prevalence is weak and varies according to the ethnic origin. This familial abnormality is due to various mutations or polymorphisms of genes. It may be associated with other dental abnormalities. In children, it is responsible for growth, mastication, and phonation disorders, hypo-alveolia and lingual interposition in the toothless sites. We report the management of 30 patients presenting with oligodontia. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The diagnosis was made on clinical an

The impact of targeted shortened preclinical exercises on student perceptions and outcomes.

The Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) introduced problem-based learning (PBL) into the dental curriculum in 1994 as a part of curriculum reform. During the reorganization, departments were consolidated, and courses were taught in an interdisciplinary fashion rather than in a discipline-based approach. The changes required a reduction in lecture and preclinical clock hours, which might have affected student performance and anxiety levels. The objectives of this study were to 1) compare the HSDM didactic and laboratory preclinical hours in Endodontics, Operative, and Prosthodontics before

Health-related disparities: influence of environmental factors.

Racial disparities in health cannot be explained solely on the basis of poverty, access to health care, behavior, or environmental factors. Their complex etiology is dependent on interactions between all these factors plus genetics. Scientists have been slow to consider genetics as a risk factor because genetic polymorphisms tend to be more variable within a race than between races. Now that studies are demonstrating the existence of racial differences in allelic frequencies for multiple genes affecting a single biologic mechanism, the present argument for a significant genetic role in contrib

An update on oral clinical courses among patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection: A clinical follow-up (a prospective prevalent cohort) study.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary literature has revealed that Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes acute sialadenitis and related symptoms, such as discomfort, pain, swelling, and secretory dysfunction in salivary glands. The secretory dysfunction is due to SARS-CoV-2 infection-induced xerostomia and other associated clinical courses such as sore tongue, mucosal ulcer, and gingivitis in the oral cavity. Furthermore, it has been reported that COVID-19 causes the development of other oral manifestations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective clinical follow-up (a prevale

Assessment of operant learning and memory in mice born through ICSI.

STUDY QUESTION: Are there differences in operant learning and memory between mice born through ICSI and naturally conceived control (CTL) mice? SUMMARY ANSWER: ICSI females exhibited deficits in the acquisition reward learning relative to CTL females, and ICSI males exhibited deficiencies in discrimination learning and memory relative to CTL males. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Some human outcome studies have suggested that ICSI might be associated with an increased risk of certain cognitive disorders, but only one of two behavioral studies with ICSI mouse models have reported differences between I

Towards triple elimination of HIV, syphilis and HBV mother-to-child transmission: Protocol of a simplified and integrated strategy in Burkina Faso and The Gambia: Protocol for the phase 1 of the TRI-MOM project.

INTRODUCTION: Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B virus (HBV) commonly observed in the WHO African region is associated with excess morbidity and mortality. Despite some progress, the coverage of interventions to prevent MTCT of these infections remains insufficient, particularly for syphilis and HBV. To fulfil these gaps and achieve the triple elimination of MTCT of these infections by 2030, the World Health Organization (WHO) advocates for integration of prevention of MTCT (PMTCT) activities for HBV with HIV and syphilis antenatal services. The Value of Pressure Indexes in Predicting the Outcome of Diabetic Foot Ulcers as a Guide to Further Management.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) stand out as a prevalent and debilitating condition. Furthermore, the progression of diabetes-related hyperglycemia and associated conditions such as peripheral arterial disease exacerbates the risks of DFUs, including complications like infection and gangrene. Given the significant burden of DFUs, there is a pressing need to improve preventive and therapeutic strategies. This study investigates the clinical profiles of patients with DFUs, including the importance of smoking and intermittent claudication, evaluates management strategies based on the va

Enhancing type 2 diabetes care by an individualized and group-based therapeutic patient education program: study protocol for a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) presents a significant challenge to health systems and its prevalence is projected to increase. T2D is significantly influenced by lifestyle factors, including diet and physical activity. This makes therapeutic patient education (TPE) a pivotal component of T2D treatment strategies. While in some countries, like Germany and the UK, TPE elements like physician counselling regarding lifestyle changes (e.g., nutrition, smoking, exercise) and participation in diabetes education courses are part of structured nationwide disease management programs; in Switzerland,

Anthropometric, biochemical, dietary, morbidity and well-being assessments in women and children in Indonesia, India and Senegal: a UKRI GCRF Action Against Stunting Hub protocol paper.

INTRODUCTION: Child stunting has a complex aetiology, especially in the first 1000 days of life. Nutrition interventions alone have not produced expected impacts in reducing/preventing child stunting, indicating the importance of understanding the complex interplay between environmental, physiological and psychological factors influencing child nutritional status. This study will investigate maternal and child nutrition, health and well-being status and associated factors through the assessment of: (1) anthropometry, (2) biomarkers of nutrition and health status, (3) dietary intakes, (4) fetal
