Polarization perception in humans: on the origin of and relationship between Maxwell's spot and Haidinger's brushes.

Under specific conditions of illumination and polarization, differential absorption of light by macular pigments is perceived as the entoptic phenomena of Maxwell's spot (MS) or Haidinger's brushes (HB). To simulate MS and HB, an existing computational model of polarization-dependent properties of the human macula was extended by incorporating neuronal adaptation to stabilized retinal images. The model predicted that polarized light modifies the appearance of MS leading to the perception of a novel phenomenon. The model also predicted a correlation between the observed diameters of MS and HB. …

Does repeatedly viewing overweight versus underweight images change perception of and satisfaction with own body size?

Body dissatisfaction is associated with subsequent eating disorders and weight gain. One-off exposure to bodies of different sizes changes perception of others' bodies, and perception of and satisfaction with own body size. The effect of repeated exposure to bodies of different sizes has not been assessed. We randomized women into three groups, and they spent 5 min twice a day for a week completing a one-back task using images of women modified to appear either under, over, or neither over- nor underweight. We tested the effects on their perception of their own and others' body size, and satis…

Pain perception in chronic knee osteoarthritis with varying levels of pain inhibitory control: an exploratory study.

Background and aims Pain is a disabling symptom in knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and its underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Dysfunction of descending pain modulatory pathways and reduced pain inhibition enhance pain facilitation in many chronic pain syndromes but do not fully explain pain levels in chronic musculoskeletal conditions. The objective of this study is to explore the association of clinical variables with pain intensity perception in KOA individuals with varying levels of Conditioned Pain Modulation (CPM) response. Methods This is a cross-sectional, exploratory analysis us…

Perception of pungent, gustatory and olfactory stimuli in patients with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis.

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) is a rare disease caused by a mutation in the nerve growth factor (NGF) receptor, which results in an absence of Aδ and C fibers. It can be considered that this defect may also lead to deterioration of oral sensations. The aim of the present study was to clarify the ability of CIPA patients to perceive pungent, gustatory, and olfactory stimuli, which is essential for eating function, and the impact of the defect on dietary habits. Sensitivities to capsaicin and the five basic tastes were evaluated by measuring their threshold values, and

Knowledge, (mis-)conceptions, risk perception, and behavior change during pandemics: A scoping review of 149 studies.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 pandemic has spread rapidly and has a growing impact on individuals, communities, and healthcare systems worldwide. At the core of any pandemic response is the ability of authorities and other stakeholders to react appropriately by promoting hygiene and social distancing behaviors. Successfully reaching this goal requires both individual and collective efforts to drastically modify daily routines and activities. There is a need to clarify how knowledge and awareness of disease influence risk perception, and subsequent behavior in the context …

Blocking tactile input to one finger using anaesthetic enhances touch perception and learning in other fingers.

Brain plasticity is a key mechanism for learning and recovery. A striking example of plasticity in the adult brain occurs following input loss, for example, following amputation, whereby the deprived zone is "invaded" by new representations. Although it has long been assumed that such reorganization leads to functional benefits for the invading representation, the behavioral evidence is controversial. Here, we investigate whether a temporary period of somatosensory input loss to one finger, induced by anesthetic block, is sufficient to cause improvements in touch perception ("direct" effects o…
